Explorer Freezes When Scan Inside Archives Is Enabled

Win7 x64 SP1 + all updates

Intel i5 2500k

ASUS P8Z68-V PRO

8GB G.Skill Ram

Bitdefender Antivirus Plus 16.25.0.1710

ZoneAlarm Free Firewall 9.2.106

Windows explorer keeps freezing for up to 60+ seconds at a time whenever "Scan inside archives" is enabled in the On-access scanning settings, even if I have it set to limit archive size to 5MB or under. This happens when doing something as simple as opening a folder with pictures, or browsing my music folder. It also prevents the explorer "open with" dialog from appearing properly, and I have also had apps such as Winamp and Firefox completely lock up on me when this setting is enabled.

I tested with the archive scanning both enabled and disabled many, many, many, many, many, many times over... with both rebooting and not rebooting between changes so I am without a doubt 100% positive that the archive scanning option is causing these problems because the PC runs 100% stable for hours and hours on end with it disabled. Once I turn it back on I can't browse my PC for more than 10 minutes before the problems arise again, and I can recreate it on demand.

The ONLY other security software on my PC is ZoneAlarm Free firewall. I have tried a complete clean uninstall and the Bitdefender problem remains. I have also done a complete uninstall and reinstall of Bitdefender and it still remains whenever the archive scanning is turned on.

Why is the archive scanning option causing these problems, and what do I need to do to figure out what's going on?

Nevermind. I just uninstalled the trial and went with Kaspersky AV 2013. What changed my mind more than anything is the lack of support I see everywhere in these forums. It looks like there's a single person handling everything. What a joke. You'd think one of the best AV products on the market would have a support team to match it. Listen up Bitdefender, you're going to lose potentially paying customers this way... but what do you care as long as your product is rated #1 by AV-Comparatives and other independent testing sites.

  • This has been a problem for a couple of months now. It stems from an update and the only fix is to set "On Access Scanning" to "Normal." Doesn't say much for wanting aggressive scanning. This feature (aggressive scanning) worked without a problem before the update.

This has been reported before and hasn't been corrected yet (to my knowledge).

  • Hello :)

A product update was released and it will be installed on your machine in maximum 24 hours. Your build should be 16.26.0.1739 (please right click on Bitdefender icon from system tray-near the clock-and choose "About". You should see in the left side the build number).

In order for the product update to be installed, you need to reboot your machine(you should see in the Events -> "Reboot required" under the Update module).

Let me know if everything is OK now.

Should you need any further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact us.

    Have a great day!
