Windows 8 Security Version

New to Windows 8 but installed "Bitdefender Windows 8 Security" - alas Firefox (latest release Ver 18) screeched to a halt.

Had some other Virus checkers on system, but all disabled. Removed all traces of other virus-checkers and updated Firefox to latest Beta - and all seems to be OK now.

However:-

Action Centre within Windows 8 has a permanent message that BitDefender has both Virus Checking and Firewall switched off.

BitDefender indicates that both are on - and they do seem to be on as an incoming virus has just been zapped.

Disappointed by this warning message however. The messages in Action Center don't seem to have a time-stamp - this is poor - maybe they are historic!!!

First time user of Bitdefender - retired from IT - remember the days when mainframes had 16K main storage.

    Hi Hamish, and welcome :)

The Action Center notifications have been resolved for some, and maybe not for others: http://forum.bitdefender.com/index.php?s=&...st&p=174139

Update and restart your PC if you are not up to date with the current build (see below). To check this, right click the Bitdefender Notification Area icon, and About

If you had installed Bitdefender with another type of AV solution. i.e. virus checker on your PC, this could have dinged things up a bit with the install, and a repair of Bitdefender from Programs and Features may get things in order, if the other solutions were totally uninstalled, including using any uninstall tool for that software. (Malwarebytes free version is compatible with Bd)

Glad to hear that FF is running now, so far I've found v.17 to be the most stable on my PCs with Bitdefender....FF comes out with updates like an AV does with pulse virus updates, and at times can be hard for Bitdefender to keep up with ^_^

    Thanks for your consideration :)

  • If the above suggestions do not work in resolving the Action Center notifications of Bitdefender being turned off, you can try the steps provided in this KB article: http://www.bitdefender.com/support/What-to...d-off-1091.html

  • Many thanks for suggestion.

Have exactly the same symptoms on 2 systems, both with fresh installations of Windows 8 Pro 64bit.

Tried Repairing BitDefender on main system and THIS HAS FIXED THE PROBLEM.

During the process of the repair I monitored the Action Centre and it obviously monitors everything in real time - it noted the lack of a virus-checker following the reboot at the end of the repair it recorded both Virus Checker & Firewall were up and running.

Many thanks for your help. Will now have a look at the second system. A bit puzzled why both systems were displaying identical symptoms - but happy that things are looking up!!

  • You're welcome :) Thanks for posting back your results, Hamish. Glad to hear the one is resolved, and now just one more to go.

Quite the computer history you have there...and with the word I'm envious of...retired :D

  • Thanks for all your help.

Downloaded latest version on 2nd machine and everything was fine

A little disappointed with initial problems at the time - but a very straightforward fix. This product seems to have an excellent detection rate, so I await its performance with interest.

  • I'm glad to hear the that BD is successfully installed on the 2nd PC :)

Since you have such an excellent background in IT, I just thought I'd mention these things for your information. Christian did an excellent job in creating a reference and resource library in the Pinned Topics of this forum, including other members topics. Especially for new BD users who already have BD up and running, are the topics listed in the Antivurus and Firewall sub forums.

Here also is some useful information.
