File Zone/net Zone Indicators

I have BitDefender 2008. Recently the net zone indicator goes to the the big red X mode, but the firewall indicates it is still working ok, as does the anti-virus.

By re-booting it comes back OK but then after a few minutes reverts to the X

I've been suffering with this for the last 4-5 days - probably since the auto update to 11.0.15 (Total Security 2008).

Personally, I don't reboot, I just stop & restart the firewall to get rid of the X - a lot easier.

I went through the live chat about this and they passed me on to the support people.

Got an email back on Monday requesting more info for them to recreate the problem in the lab, but have not heard anything since.

    Still suffering though! <img class=" />

  • I just installed the trail version of Total Security 2008 and am having some issues. I got everything set up and dialed in. Everything was working fine after a few days so I installed the program on my laptop too. I got everything set up the way I wanted and all seemed to be good. When I checked back later many of my features, such as firewall and stealth mode, had been disabled. I checked the computer I first installed on, which is on a secured wireless network with the second computer, and it was now having the same problems. I could not turn the disabled features back on so I diconnected from the network and the internet and I ran virus scans on both computers. I found nothing so I uninstalled and reinstalled the program on both computers. All was well, but a few hours later I began having the same problems again. Does anyone have any ideas as to what could be causing the problems?

  • Hello,

I've noticed this issue only once or twice, but only after Product Updates (not Signature Updates). But this issue seems to be related to updates. Please disable the Automatic updates and see if the problem persists.

Also, there should be an update on the way to fix this issue, because the problem is known. Yesterday, there was an update that involved new versions of the updating module. Please make this update and see if the problem persists.

P.S.: You can monitor the BitDefender Update Status thread to see what updates were released.

  • I now have this problem on Net Zone. I am Up to Date but the problem persists. Help.

  • Hello goldegoose,

I also noticed that the X on the Firewall appears almost after every update (YES! it only appears after an update, not randomly).

However, this times, the protection is not disabled. It appears to be only a problem is communication with the BD Activity Bar. If you open BitDefender you'll see the Firewall's activity.

To make the X disappear you don't need to restart your computer (as it was the case until now). All you have to do is disable and re-enable the Firewall. This will cause a refresh of the Activity Bar and the X will be gone.

I'll report this on the first chance I have.

I had a response from Tech Support about my issue with this.

They recommended that I should remove the following software from my machine (which apparently 'enter in conflict with Bitdefender') :

    BOClean

    Comodo Memory Guardian

    HijackThis 2.0.2

    Spybot - Search & Destroy

    Trojan Remover 6.6.5

Only BOClean is actually running all the time time.

Trojan Remover only runs on startup.

And everything else is disabled.... until I need to use it!!

And, ALL this software was installed & running before I started to get the erros.

I've not actually had the time to do what they want (& am not really sure that I want to!).

When my machine was on for a couple of hours this afternoon, it went through 2 updates, and the red 'X' error happened once - so maybe something is happening within the updates that is fixing this?!?!?!

With regards to that update on Wednesday that you mentioned above (in post #4), that was a really horrible experience. I think both my machines experienced trouble with 20-30 failed updates which resulted in the updater to crash. Obviously, they update OK now though!

I don't think that HijackThis! can possibly conflict with ANYTHING! Because it doesn't need any installation (well, version 2.0.2 needs installation, but only to make it easier...).

HijackThis is made only from a single executable, which doesn't modify any files, doesn't use the registry (as far as I know) and, most importantly, doesn't have ANY kind of realtime monitoring capabilities.

About the other applications... I don't run any of them, and I have the same problem.

    It doesn't happen always.

The update I was talking about in post #4 has fixed this pronblem, partially. As I said before, now the modules are not disabled after an pdate. The red X in the Firewall zone is just a glitch. The Firewall is up and running (at least...most of the times... maybe there are times when it really remains disabled, but I didn't notice).

  • Update:

I talked to TechSupport. Again, they assured me that this is only a display problem and the Firewall is enabled in reality (as I said above).

The issue will be fixed as soon as possible.

  • I can assure you that it isn't just a visual "glitch". If you are playing a game and this red x appears you get an incredible lag spike in online play. It lasts about 10 seconds and when the lag spike is done, the red x appears. When you try to stop any bit defender services in xp, they fail to stop and then restart.

I can say with confidence that this is the last time I'll buy any of the products here, as well as the last time I believe in any PC Magazine or CNet reviews. What a bunch of B.S.

  • Hi Cris and everyone, thanks for sharing... I just installed BD Internet Security 2008 few days ago, and notice the same issue as mentioned above : Red Cross at Net Zone.. with that comes message under 'Status' (inside DB Security Center window) : 5 issues affect your security in your system. It prompt me to 'Fix all now', but clicking the button receives no response & action.

In general, i'm quite pleased with BD performance so far :-

1)My PC boot up & other speed has improved (Previous Norton slowed down system).

2)Pop up screen to indicate virus it has blocked.

3)8 out 10 for ease of use and settings.

    4)Faster scan speed.

5)History on action, task & virus intercepted.

6)The '24hrs Chat' was very helpful for short & immediate questions.

Some things can be improved :-

1)I emailed above problem 2 days ago to support@bitdefender.com, still no reply.

2)Encountered 1 virus cant be elimated, was directed to BitDefender.com rather than initiating an auto email window to support on the issue.

    Issues that need helps :-

1)The one above(Red Cross at Net Zone)..guess no solution yet after going through this thread.

2)Trojan.Obfus.6.Gen was blocked successfully most of the time (see attachment), why this virus so consistent in bugging my PC/System?

2)Any way to eliminate Trojan.Obfus.6.Gen? as prompted by BD at one time that it cant be eliminated.

4)How to get rid of pop-up ads or adware? it seems that it's still inside my PC after all the scanning.

    Thanks people for your insights.

The problem is somewhere else (in the way that BD makes the updates). A few details you can find here: http://forum.bitdefender.com/index.php?showtopic=4011

But no solution was released yet.

An alternative to prevent BD from updateing while you play is using the GameMode (BD doesn't update while in GameMode).

When you try to stop any bit defender services in xp, they fail to stop and then restart.

    This behavior is by design.

If you look on the Requested Features section, you'll see that there were many users who requested a SelfProtection module for BitDefender. Now, after it was implemented, I am extremely surprised to see that the users don't like it, and they consider a bug the fact that BD can't be forced to close. Maybe it's just me...

Please post a HijackThis! log, on the Malware section.
