Bdav 2014 Oddities And Deal Breaker.

Now that I've used the new BDAV 2014 for a little while, here's what I have noticed.

My settings:

I have everything except “on-access scanning” “active virus control” “submit suspicious quarantined files for further analysis” and “Antiphishing” turned off. So, all items under “General” are off, both items under “Advanced” are off. Everything under “Vulnerability” are off, All “Exclusion” options are off/disabled. “Chat encryption” and “data protection” are all off. “Auto update” is off. I do not use “Safego” or “Wallet.”

1. Auto update doesn't stay off. I like doing my own updates manually but over the last week Auto update turned itself back on 3 times all by itself. Why?

2. There are now 4 background processes running where in 2013 there was only bdagent.exe. Now there is bdagent, pmbxag, pwdmanui, and bdapppassmgr. I do not use any services other than AV, I would like to stop those unused services especially since they are turned off in the program options. I do not trust services “running in the background” when I have specifically turned them off in the BD program.

3. Autopilot turns on all by itself. Every time I open BD it is in autopilot mode then switches to user mode after a couple seconds. This is not acceptable. Has user mode been disabled? If so, Why?

4. The “Wallet” keeps turning itself back on all by itself. Why?

What’s up guys?

  • One more thing, I really don't like that the "Last Updated" notification was removed. Why? What is it with all these companies that they want to hide all the program activities? It's like in many web mail services when you delete a message, it goes to trash and then only shows things in trash that haven't been read. It's like they want you to leave your trash on the server. OR when MS removed the network activity light from Windows saying "it was distracting." Yea, it is distracting to those that watch when thier computer is making connections when it shouldn't be. Like they don't want you to know what your computer is doing when you're not looking. lol With all the NSA revelations, EVERY security program is now in question. BD, have you been recruited? lol Oh never mind, I know you can't tell me.

Either way, put the "Last Updated" notification back!

    Thanks!

I completely agree that this is quite annoying. I also have Wallet turned off. I just don't use it.

The pwdmanui.exe and bdapppassmgr.exe should NOT be running.

It is a really bad style of programming to leave processes running in the background that clearly only

serve the purpose of providing a feature that has, in fact, been completely disabled.

Imagine every piece of software on your computer did that (Programmer A to Programmer B:

A: "Hey, should we disable the extra services in memory if a user disables our super new and cool feature"

B - "Nah, nevermind, it does not use much memory, so why should we bother. Let's take a break instead ;)"

Bcause way too many programs behave this inconsiderate and thoughtess, comupters tend to

slow down with too many of these kinds of programs installed.

In a nutshell: It's bad style, it is inconsiderate and shows a disregard for the users who do not want to

use the Wallet. Please stop all Wallet processes from running if a user chooses to disable it.

(On top of that, The Wallet plugins for Firefox, IE, etc. should be REMOVED if wallet is disabled).

    3. Autopilot turns on all by itself. Every time I open BD it is in autopilot mode then switches to user mode after a couple seconds. This is not acceptable. Has user mode been disabled? If so, Why?

IMHO it does not really turn istelf back on, it is the user interface that is just laggy.

In other words, autopilot is off, but the UI needs a second or two to show you that every time

you open the main window. But nevertheless it is confusing and should be fixed.

I did turn off the additional services pmbxag, pwdmanui, and bdapppassmgr manually and it doesn't seem to have any adverse effects. So one problem solved. The Wallet and auto update have remained off as well. 2 and 3 down...

You may be right but how do I know for sure? Yes, it needs to be fixed. So the "Last Updated" notification needs to be returned and I will be a bit happier.

I guess BD support took the week off, I wonder if they are part of the US Gov shutdown...? hummm... :-)

However, my point of view often changes when faced with pure genius or an extremely beautiful female.

  • If you don't want the wallet stuff to load during windows startup there is a way to prevent it. I have used CCleaner to disable the two entries that trigger it as attached.

Thanks, Yea, I already did it with msconfig. Now all I want is for the "Last updated" notification to be restored.

Yeah, I used CCleaner as well to disable the Wallet background services from loading at startup.

    Worked like a charm.

But my point is that a clean, well-written piece of software should be considerate enough to

take care of that automatically -_- . It has something to do with a little bit of respect for a user's decision

    not to use the funky-fresh-latest-and-greatest Wallet feature <img class=" /> .

Oh come now spacemarine, haven't you heard? We are mere subjects and the corporations are King. As King, you don't ask subjects what they want you simply coerce them gradually towards what you want. From time to time the King must grant permission to the subjects in order to keep them grazing properly or they may rise up! But the sheep are easily contented and sloppy/inconsiderate programming isn't enough to get them to rise up, so why bother? :-)

Now if I can just get our masters to restore the "Last Updated" notification, this sheep may be silent for awhile... baaaa...

  • Very well said. But I still hope that maybe once in a while the mighty kings of Bitdefender could

Hmm, as it seems to me, the most recent build of BD (v17.20)

now does disable the wallet startup programs when the wallet

    feature has been turned off.

    New behaviour:

If I turn wallet on, pwdmanui.exe is put in the list of autostart programs

    (checked with CCleaner)

If I turn wallet off, pwdmanui.exe vanishes from the startup list :)

Seems like someone of the devs might be listening ???! wink.gif

I cant't tell you about the other two startup .exes (bdapppassmgr.exe and pmbxag.exe)

as I have deleted them some time ago using CCleaner. They do not seem to reappear.

Can anyone please check If these two startup entries are also removed when you turn off

the wallet with the most recent BD version ?

    best regards,

    Spacemarine

  • The other two startup .exes SEEM to stay; turning Wallet on or off SEEMS to have no effect on these. Further testing should be done (closing browsers, rebooting, etc.). Will try and report back later.
