Auto Update Kills Networking
Installed trial on 3 separate systems. This issue is happening on all 3 systems.
had to "turn off" the auto update on all systems.
When Auto updating, crashes all network connections and
requires a reboot to get network running again.
I searched for this issue and came across several posts
of people having same issue within the last year. But never
found any fixes.
Current version, downloaded within a day or two.
XP pro's with sp3
Also set for prompt before update, prompts for signature only
update.
Need to find fix or uninstall.

Wait, you're still using Windows XP? Don't you think you should upgrade to something more recent like Windows 7? But whatever, on to your problem.
Although I haven't seen any notices of what the support cutoff date for Bitdefender's support of Windows XP is, I know they aren't going to support it forever. You can always try emailing Customer Support directly. You can set up an email ticket here :

they think about windows XP. Which still has around 40% of all desktops.
So dropping support would be dumb.
So I think I have stabilized the system.
Let's see.
1. Turn off auto updates.
2. Turn off active virus control
3. msconfig and turn off updater service.
Since this has been an issue I guess I figured someone
would have a quick fix.
When the network crashes I see the "svserver" seems
to be running aound 30% cpu steady.
I have to wonder what kind of protection I'm
left with by turning off the above.
I'll run until trial days are up and
then decide. If there's no fix, so be it,
I'll move on to another AV product.0 -

Not entirely. According to the Microsoft website, extended support for Windows XP (including security patches, Windows Defender signature updates, and operating system and software updates) will be discontinued after April 8, 2014. You can read this information from the Microsoft website here:

As far as your specific problem goes, again you would have to contact Customer Support directly. The majority of users on this forum (including myself) are using Windows Vista and above, and most of our suggestions will not apply to your specific scenario. I do, however know of two other forum users who have Windows XP installed. I will PM this forum thread to them and see if they have any solutions. Turning off "Auto Updates", or even "Auto Scanning" will not cause any security risks as long as you remember to do these tasks manually from time to time. Turning off features such as the Firewall or Active Virus Control will pose significant security risks as your computer will no longer be protected from threats in Real Time. Essentially, you would be leaving your computer wide open for attacks. So I would try to leave those features on as much as possible.0 -

Symantec updates were also crashing Windows XP even in 2012. The reasons are a bit geeky but you can read about it here
This type of thing does not surprise me given how different Vista and above are from XP. New AV software updates are designed to be compatible with W8.x and W7 which gets you decent compatibility with Vista but very little with XP.
If you want to stay with XP my suggestion is to use an older version of Bitdefender. You could try BD 2013. The virus definitions should be the same though I don't know that for sure.0
