Using Windows 7 Firewall

Greetings!

Is it possible for BitDefender to take advantage of Windows 7 Firewall in any way? That is, is there any advantage to turning on the Win7 Firewall or Windows Defender?

I am using build 17.26.0.1106. Thank you for your help!

    Hiya,

I believe you are using BD Internet Security? If so you already have a firewall that is more effective than the Windows firewall, plus is is not a good idea to run more than one as they end up conflicting and not working properly.

You can certainly run Bitdefender alongside Windows 7 Defender as they are different programs checking for different things.

Like the others have said, I would definitely NOT have Windows 7 Firewall or Windows Defender running at the same time Bitdefender is running. First of all, Bitdefender's Firewall is much better than the Windows 7 Firewall. Second off all, Windows Defender can cause conflicts with Bitdefender. That is why Bitdefender turns both these programs off upon installation.

  • BD did not turn off my Windows Defender when it was first installed. the only one it turns off is the Windows 8 Defender which is an anti-virus program. Win 7 Defender runs alongside BD quite happily.

Not true. Bitdefender turned off Windows Defender on my Windows 7 PC when I first installed it in addition to the Firewall. But again, I don't know why you would even want Windows defender turned on. AV-Comparatives uses Windows Defender as a standard of failure, as in if an antivirus program does worse than Windows Defender, it failed big time.

  • I still don't think you understand - Windows Defender as used in Windows 7 is not an antivirus, in Win 7 it was MSE that was the AV and was turned off by BD. Windows Defender as used in Windows 8 is an Antivirus program, two different programs for different purposes.

AV Comparatives use Windows Defender as the least effective in Win 8 and MSE in Win 7 and below.

No, I don't think you understand. I don't care if Windows Defender is not explicitly classified as an antivirus program. <img class=" /> The fact of the matter is that Bitdefender does indeed turn off Windows Defender upon installation. I know because that's exactly what happened when I installed Bitdefender on my Windows 7 PC. And no I don't have Microsoft Security Essentials, nor did I even mention that once. So why even bring that into the conversation? I'm sure Bitdefender turns that off as well.

I mean seriously, I have FRAPS and can upload a video to YouTube proving this. And when I do, please delete your account, because I stand by my original allegation that you are nothing more than a forum rank wh@re who does nothing more than either plagiarize other people's posts or add misinformation to topics. And that angers me, because there are people here who might actually might take your posts seriously, and cause all sorts of problems. With that being said, I wasn't to emphasize three main points:

    1. Windows Defender and Windows Firewall both perform poorly. With that being said, if you have Bitdefender Internet Security, you shouldn't even want to turn these on because you already have better protection.

    2. Running multiple antivirus programs at once can cause problems due to conflicts with each other. This is why Bitdefender turns off Windows Defender and Windows Firewall upon installation.

    3. Running multiple antivirus programs at once does not mean better protection. This is the single most idiotic argument I've ever heard "pro multi-antivirus" people make, and I quote Bleeping Computer:

Having more than one AV would catch more viruses – right? No, WRONG! Each anti-virus will often interpret the activity of the other as a virus and there is a greater chance of them alerting you to a "False Positive". If one finds a virus and then the other also finds the same virus, both programs will be competing over exclusive rights on dealing with that virus. Each anti-virus will attempt to remove the offending file and quarantine it. If one finds and quarantines the file before the other one does, then you encounter the problem of both wanting to scan each other's zipped or archived files and each reporting the other's quarantined contents. This can lead to a repetitive cycle of endless alerts that continually warn you that a virus has been found when that is not the case.

Anti-virus scanners use virus definitions to check for viruses and these can include a fragment of the virus code which may be recognized by other anti-virus programs as the virus itself. Because of this, most anti-virus programs encrypt their definitions so that they do not trigger a false alarm when scanned by other security programs. However, some anti-virus vendors do not encrypt their definitions and will trigger false alarms if used while another resident anti-virus program is active.

To avoid these problems, use only one anti-virus solution. Deciding which one to remove is your choice.

So do us all a favor and just stop.

@Captian Obvious while I do agree many times with your PC knowledge and understanding, if you could just tone it down a bit, may help others get more out of your posts. I know you haven't gone totally nuts ^_^ but please consider topic #9 of General Rules, in the Forum Rules . And I know concerning myself...."what's the best thing to come out of Minn?...I-35" lol :)

I do agree with you in not having any type of scanners be it AV or even spyware running simultaneously along side of Bitdefender. Since I may post here a bit more frequently, I try to recommend Christian's and Georgia's (let alone the software engineers) desire to let Bitdefender do it's job more effectively and accurately without any interference or conflicts from other real time solutions. That is why I will personally never promote anything else but a 2nd opinion "on demand" scan by say, MBAN or Defender (as an example). What others end up doing, is up to them, but I'll keep interjecting the above opinion as and when needed.

Now, let's get back to, or let OP, George, respond to what's been posted here regarding his question ^_^

    Hello,

Windows Firewall can be used only near Bitdefender Antivirus Plus or Bitdefender Antivirus Free Edition.

Also, Windows Defender is considered another security solution and can interfere with the functionality of Bitdefender(or any other antivirus, think about the situation where both solutions detect the same malware and want to take actions for it). In the installation process, this product will be turned off automatically.

For the other situation, as mentioned by Scott, please read the forums rules:

    Thank you!
