Bitdefender Internet Security 2008

when i try to transfer a file(~8gig) from my windows pc to my mac, i always get "limited or no connectivity" and my internet on my pc gets disconnected. i would have to reboot my pc in order to get the internet working again. just to add, during the no connectivity period, my system lags, my mouse cursor does not response to my movement. i've reformatted my pc and i am still having this problem. i am quite sure it is the bitdefender's program because without installing it, i can transfer the whole file without any error.

my specs is: msi p7n diamond nforce 780i chipset and i am running Window Vista Ultimate x64

  • Could you try transfering the file with the firewall disabled? Come back with the result.

    Regards.

  • tired it. the problem still occurs

Do you have Vista SP1 installed ?!

  • Try finding out the maximum file size you can safely transfer. Try sending 7,6,5,4,3,2,1 GB files . Tell us which was first to have successfuly been transfered.

Dummy files can be easily created writing your own program. Just write some random characters inside ... if you want to test this, i can make the program for you.

i've tried watching videos from my mac through my pc. meaning that the videos are on my pc and i'm watching it on my mac. the videos are about 180mb and some time jus watching the first video will cause the network of my pc to disconnect. it's quite random.

  • Did you try unstealthing yuor firewall?

yes. i'm going to try using another pc to transfer. to see if it is my mac causing the problem

the problem still occurs. tried using my windows xp pc and transfering the data. got the limited error on my vista pc

  • hello??? anyone?

  • I too have this problem with 64bit Vista. Try disabling your Bitdefender NDIS filter

    Control Panel\Network Connections

right click on your network connection and click properties. then untick it NDIS.

I get kicked offline randomly with this on. Ongoing for a while but no solution yet from bitdefender.

    hope it helps

  • Hello j o e l,

    See if this helps:

Press the windows button together with r now type devmgmt.msc press enter. Expand network adaptors now right click on your network card choose properties, advanced tab, link speed change automatic to a lower speed. Try also to update the drivers of your network card. Open BitDefender by right clicking on the red BitDefender icon that you will find in the system tray choose open advanced settings once you are in the Antivirus section navigate to the shield tab and press on custom level. Check the following option:

    Do not scan network shares

Do not scan files greater than

Uncheck scan http traffic press on ok. See if it now works.

    Best regards

  • to Kenny and Niels, by doing it, does it lower my internet security?

  • Hello j o e l,

Disabling BitDefender NDIS filter is only safe when you are in lan or home network. Because if you disable that you will loose security. Network attacks (port scans, etc) will not be blocked when you disable it. You will be safe if you enabled your routers build in firewall.

What I suggested will only reduce the system resource impact but not the security. If the file is for example infected BitDefender will still react when you try to open it.

You told me I was still protected????

I kept getting disconnected with IS 2008 64bit. So after a frustrating 4 months with tech support i have progress. Untick the BitDefender NDIS filter and see if that works..................it did.

    Now my questions are,

Am I fully protected with this disabled?

Why no graph for net Zone? File zone is ok

What does the NDIS filter do?

    thanks

    Kenny

    Dear Kenny,

The problem could be due that you have another ndis filter driver installed which is a known issue in vista see this microsoft article. Go to start, network, press on open network center. Right click on you network card choose properties and untick anyother NDIS filter driver you find press on ok. Try to check BitDefender NDIS filter driver once again. Check also this link.

You are still protected you will still see pop-up's if a known programs connects to the internet.

Now all packets that are being send and received trough you network are being monitored now. That is the only difference.

  • i've disabled NDIS and it worked. now i'm going to try enabling it with what Niels suggested.

  • Hello Kenny,

Sorry about that. But port scans aren't blocked. But when stealth mode is enabled your computer is still invisible. So if you let it enabled there isn't anything to worry about it.

Only when there is loads of traffic it will be visible on the net zone more specificly when http traffic scanner is at work mostly when you are watching movies.

    Hello Niels

I dont watch movies but I do play online games so I am still protected?

I have not unticked anything apart from the NDIS filter. If I am unprotected I will have to get another IS package as with it ticked I get DC randomly.

    Kenny

  • i noticed that my net zone also does not show any network activity after disabling and re-enabling NDIS.

after disabling it doesnt work, i hid it.

but after renabling it, it should work, might need a reboot though

  • Hello Kenny and j o e l,

There must be large files transfered or uploaded to the internet before you will see anything on the net zone. You can see that there is network activity when you go to the firewall, activity.

    Hello Kenny,

That is also the same if BitDefender NDSIS Filter Driver is checked you will not always see activity on the graph bar that is only when there is loads of network activity. The only way to check is go to the activity section (go to firewall and press on the traffic tab).

what does NDIS do anyway? why is it causing these issues? will there be a fix for it in the next few updates? anyway, i really appreciate your replies.

I have just downloaded bitdefender (after an email from tech support) again and there is no activity in the net zone graph, enbled ndis and download it again there is activity. again disabled ndis and no activity shown on net zone. I have done this hundreds of times over 5 months still awaiting for a solution. I think its a 64bit issue only as my laptop and work machines are OK but they run 32bit XP and vista. My home PC runs Vista 64 bit. Had nothing but problems with bitdefender.

  • Wow, what an informative set of posts. Kenny your are on top of it. Why doesn't BitDefender read these and learn?

I had similar issues and BD was clueless. Giving me the standard answer of "Uninstall Spybot Search & Destroy". I got the same bull from Kaspersky and it did not solve their problem either. So it is up to me to do the research and testing of their product (just like Micro$oft).

I have an Asus motherboard with 2 wired lan connections and a wireless connection. I noticed that the BD Firewall NDIS Filter Driver was on each lan connection. I also had the big red X in the "Net Zone". I'm running Vista 64 (which I cuss at every day) on an AMD 6000 system.

Anyway, I spent months trying to figure out why my network connection was dropping when trying to copy a large file (> 4GB) to a shared folder on my XP. Vista support is worthless as I spent 11 straight hours (and that was just one day) and tons of email with Windows Support Martians and no solution. <img class=" /> And you probably guessed that I was told to reinstall the OS. Plus they will not give me the free XP Pro that they advertise as the downgrade option but that is another story.

I found the same thing that you found for my Network Connection drops. If you uncheck the BD NDIS Filter then the large file copy would work. :)

I also found that if you uncheck "QoS Packet Scheduling" and leave the BD NDIS Filter checked the large copy works. So others may want to try that if they still have the Network Connection drop. When my Network connection dropped I had to hard boot.

Now I need to check all 3 of my LAN Network connections to see if the BD NDIS is checked because you make me wonder if the BD driver is stepping on itself. Is it loaded/running in 3 processes?

But thanks so much for the info on the Filter. It sounds as though I don't need the BD NDIS Filter for my home setup as I have the firewall turned on in the router (D-Link DIR655). I just installed this router yesterday and seems to be a screamer. I have a 1GB connection to my Synology NAS and the backup is running like a scalded dog. Well, at least it doesn't take days to backup like it did before.

    Hi Nick,

Hope the posts helped but I have given up on bitdefender and gone to norton360 on all my machines. I have a 20mb connection on my vista64bit and absolutely no disconnects since uninstalling and installing norton360. Unfortunatly I ran bitdefender for years and recommended it to all my friends who use it, but I cannot on my vista64bit machine. Tech support have tried to help and Cris & niels have been very helpful on here but to no avail. I need all my compututers to be safe and reliable with no disconnects so I can access from home which is why I moved to Norton. If bitdefender sort it out I will return as it is by far my favourite security program. I will try it again from time to time as I have between 8 months & 16 months left on my subscriptions.
