BitDefender might have not deleted the file on your system, but might have only blocked access to it (depending on your realtime settings). In this case, the file still exists but can't be accessed, so Firefox can't start.

Please be sure to update BitDefender, make a system reboot, after the computer loads up first disable BitDefender realtime protection, then overwrite the file (if you want, make a backup of the existing file first, and put it in a password-protected archive, so BD won't detect it), then enable BD realtime protection. Test if the detection is still present and post the result.

Okay well I did an update of which there was nothing new to update, I've rebooted, I've tried Firefox, it not only refuses to load, I now cannot even uninstall it so now I'm pretty frustrated and stressed because I've lost a whole load of bookmarks of which were quite important to me!

    <img class=" />

I'm using BitDefender Total Internet Security 2008 and Windows XP SP2

  • I switched back to regular mode expecting it delete the file again, but it didn't. I guess it doesn't hurt to try it. Make a backup copy of that file somewhere so you can put it back easily if needed.

I switched back to regular mode and am having no problems. Thanks so much for your help!

  • Still having problems with firefox.

I just created a TEST folder and than copied nssutil3.dll there. Reaction of BD was immediate ofcourse trojan.generic :/

P.S. BD 2009 32-bit (windows xp sp3)- didn't notice any problem with firefox

Does it work with BitDefender disabled? Does it show any error when you try to start it?

Your welcome. Sounds like other are still having problems though. I guess they must have issues different from ours. I'm running XP SP3 using Internet Security 2008 if that makes any difference.

I don't know if this helps, its actually a little confusing, but I just tried again nthdgreee's suggestion which was to download and manually put the nssutil3.dll in the firefox folder and when I tried to start firefox it actually worked! But then I restarted my computer (just to be sure) and the dll was missing again. I tried the whole process one more time but same result. So I can run firefox after putting that dll back in the folder but the next time I boot up my computer it will be screwed again.

EDIT: Tried restarting a third time, now it works. Guess third time is the charm. I post again if BD starts getting ornery again. I have do idea how this fixed itself but meh...

I'm going to try that just to see if I still have the problem.

    ETA:

I restarted my computer and FF is working fine now.

I am updating Bitdefender and rebooting my computer about a 5 hour. And the Firefox issue still according. I do whatever you say Cris but nothing changed ever. Enough, i'm bored at all. I want to use Firefox and Bitdefender(with Real-Time Protection enabled) both. <_<

  • Same thing with me-- blocking Firefox. Saw two BitDefender updates in last 45 minutes but after both was still unable to reinstall Firefox.

So I put in an exception to not check the ...\Mozilla Firefox\ directory. Then turned off BitDefender for five minutes. Then downloaded and reinstalled Firefox. Now all is well. I'll leave the exception in place until I hear definitevely that the problem has been fixed.

Mjzman's solution is the best for our position. I just made this before and it's works. Only what you need it's about one minute your time. GL

  • I have talked to someone about the 64bit problem. As we speak, the 64bit signature files are checked out and probably will be re-uploaded on server. I was not given an ETA, because this operation might take a different amount of time depending on what the problem is.

I also reported the FP about GoogleUpdate and it was also checked out. Detection should be removed after the next update.

Again, we apologize for any inconveniences and hope that this will be completely sorted out in the next few hours.

    Cris.

  • Re-installed Firefox and OpenOffice in a normal manner on nearly all my PCs and no problems found.

Thanks for the support. Surprised nobody at BitDefender runs Firefox and OpenOffice though, it could have saved a lost afternoon ...

This issue is FAR from fixed. Just ran a manual update and it was not fixed.

I am a web developer and live and die by Firefox. I am 2 days from my renewal date with bitdefender and I will NOT be renewing because of this.

I have called tech support twice and waited 20 minutes each time before I was "hung up" on by the hold system.

This is NOT fixed on x64 Vista Home Premium.

I have also emailed tech support twice. Still no reply after 20 minutes.

    EDIT--------

After another 16 minute wait on hold, I hear someone pick up and quickly put me back on hold. This is the first time I have had to contact tech support. Is this common for bitdefender's level of support?

  • I am currently still hvaing the issue with firefox have updated and rebooted still deletes the file whenever i try to reinstall

  • Yeah, I will definitely not renew. this firefox issue puts me in a real messy place...I don't think the gravity of this is really understood, it is not just a browser, it is a tool. Funny how microsoft products are ok, but MAJOR competition is wiped...OF and Mozilla? and everybody knows that IE is far less superior in every way, especially security<---irony? i am really starting to like AVG.

  • I am currently still hvaing the issue with firefox have updated and rebooted still deletes the file whenever i try to reinstall

Until BD resolves this issue, maybe you can try setting up an "Exception" for the \Program Files\Mozilla Firefox path and then restart the PC. Once it's restarted try re-installing that nssutil3.dll file and see if BD tries to delete it again.

  • I'm on my fourth call. After 10 minutes in que I am picked up and put back on hold again.

  • My current solution was to:

    Disable BD

    Reinstall FF

    Open FF

    Enable BD

once firefox is running BD doesnt affect it its just when you try to open it so leaving a window open allows you to use it freely.

  • Vista 64 Bit

    Firefox nssutil3.dll issue

Annoying problem, but now fixed for me with last update and reinstall of FF.

    Thanks.

  • The Firefox nssutil3.dll issue still remains for me, too on my 64-bit Vista laptop.

I am running BD 2009 on both my 64-bit Vista laptop and my 32-bit XP/sp3 desktop.

When I try to copy nssutil3.dll from USB stick to the laptop, BD immediately deletes it.

I have manually updated BD on both machines, but the false positive error on the 64-bit version still isn't fixed. :(

  • The latest update of BitDefender has deleted dll files needed for OpenOffice and Firefox from my PCs !!!!

    Files are :-

    nssutil3.dll

    tlmi.dll

I was affected as well. Luckily I was able to copy the deleted files from another pc and I manually updated bitdefender and everything seems fine now. However, to prevent this from happening again is there a setting that would have bitdefender ask me before it starts to delete files. I have looked all over and I can't seem to fine any options for that.

I second that suggestion -- ESPECIALLY for "Trojan Generic nnnnn" suspect files. Further, they should not be deleted, but merely quarantined so they can be restored when the false panic is over, rather than forcing the user to re-install an app that BD has broken by its overzealous action.

PS - after a reboot, the issue now appears to be resolved on 64-bit Vista. :)

Not sure why a reboot was required. There were no updates available when I checked immediateley before the reboot.

  • Looks like I have something like 75 firefox reinstalls to do now. BD is literally a full time job for me plus. It's simply killing me. This one may get me fired.

Providing you still have (or can get) at least one unerased nssutil3.dll all you need to do is copy it back into the

    [programfilepath]\Mozilla Firefox[installed version] folder.

Copy x75 is better than re-install x75 any day. ;)

FIREFOX ISSUE, resolved in 2 min:

    1. Download the missing nssutil3.dll:

    http://dllcentral.com/nssutil3.dll/3.12/

2.Paste it into your mozilla directory (C:\prog~Files\mozilla~)

3.Manage Bit Def exception: Under Settings->Antivirus->Exception tab, add your mozilla path to the exceptions

    Unusual mistake by bitdef,

    Cheers,

  • Hi all,

I just faced the same problem with OpenOffice 3.0.

Hope BitDefender will find a way to solve it.

Thanks in advance for keeping me informed.

Dear user. None of the mentioned detections is still in the product. Could you please state the exact name under which BitDefender detects the files in OpenOffice? I have scanned over the latest two (en-US) versions available of OpenOffice and have not seen any problems at this time.

Guys! I've just been informed by firefox of an unseen error : MISSING WINDOWS COMPONENT!!!!

It stated in the details: This program requires flash.ocx, which is no longer included !!!!

    I'll reinstall flash player,

i'm using bitdefender total security 2008 build 11.0.17

    Come on guys ...............

  • @PhilDrou: That detection has been removed already. Please check that you have properly updated.

@anyuser: To the best of my knowledge, no version of flash.ocx(or later versions) have been affected.

If you would be able to provide a version number for what you were using I could check.

  • The problem has not been fixed for me yet. After updating and downloading Firefox again, everything worked fine yesterday. When I turned on my computer today, I'm back to square one, Firefox won't start.

Second, before being referred to this forum I had sent an emai to technical support. They did not answer my question rather told me how to delete infected files, just what I need more deletes.

I was contacting tech support because in addition to the FF ddl delete, several other ddls were deleted on my computer. Since I'm not that computer savvy I have no idea what trouble this might cause. I hope you can help, thanks.

Here are the additional files which were deleted 4/17/09:

I also have another question in that although the false positive files were deleted, BD still says that "Some of the threats found during the scan are still active" Please explain, thanks.

  • This is quite strange. We've pushed out several more updates since then.

Were you informed of further detections today?

If you can post the TicketID you received I can ask somebody in support to recheck it.

Files found in System Volume Information are part of System Restore checkpoints. Having those files deleted would mean that if you were to use System Restore you would need to reinstall Firefox.

As for the last one, please post a log showing this. I'm not sure what you mean.

  • My last full system scan was last night and it didn't say anything other than show a red exclamation mark and that the "threats found during scan are still active" but the scan log doesn't show any threats. It should show threats from FF anyway as I have put in an exclusion until this issue is resolved for me.

Here is the ticket ID: Re: [Ticket ID:200904181002307] New Contact Message Received. Thanks for rechecking.

I'll make a note of that should I use System Restore. I hope I don't have to, last time I did a restore it caused a whole lot of problems.

Here is my last log but I can't show you where the red exclamation mark is or the mention othe threats because I can't copy it. It appears in a small box that comes on the screen when I click on an entry in the History and Event Module which allows me to view the log. The History and Event Module also has the red exclamation mark at the far left of the entry for the log below.

Looking at the log below let to two more questions: 1. Why does the program not scan rootkits and 2. My computer is only used at home, it is not password protected so I'm not sure I understand what all these entries are that are not scanned and I'm not savvy enough to know how to change it. Thanks.

You could try the following: update, set the default option for found threats to "ignore" and do an on-demand scan over your Firefox folder and see if files are still detected. Most people no longer have any problems. You shouldn't either. You should be able to safely remove the exclusion from the Firefox folder if all is OK.

I'm not sure why that exclamation mark is there, but I'm assuming it might indeed have something to do with the exclusions.

I'm sending this to support. Not sure how long this will take. Most people here are free for Easter and stuff.

    For the log questions:

    1. Check scan options. I don't know what the defaults are.

    2. Entries marked "Password-protected" refer to the fact that the scanned file cannot be accessed because the archive is password protected. For example, the file you sent to BitDefender Customer Support via email was password protected in an archive. This is not a problem. As far as I see, except for the email, all other entries refer to various quarantines and backups and an installer on the last files, found in your OEM Windows install folder I believe.

  • Okay, I updated, set to ignore and scanned FF. The dll file was not detected as a virus. But, I still can't open FF. I could yesterday after downloading the deleted file. I sure hope I don't have to do that everytime I turn off the computer. Seems to me someone else on the Mozilla forum had that problem, don't know how/if they solved it.

Thanks for the other info too.

  • Does it work with BitDefender disabled? Does it show any error when you try to start it?

I can't say i've tried with it disabled, I didn;t know whether it was wise. But no it doesn't even bring up an error anymore, which is really frustrating. You double click and nothing happens.

    |could you please identify the problem - for example what the error is, etc.

weird. I'm out of ideas here. can you uninstall firefox and reinstall it?

I'm having slightly the same issue, can't load or open Firefox, and can't uninstall it at all. I also tried adding the file path to the exception list to no avail. I don't know what I can possibly do if I can't even uninstall the thing!

  • what does the uninstaller exactly do?

  • what does the uninstaller exactly do?

It's okay, I've actually solved the issue!

I found I could reinstall it over the top of the old Firefox for some reason... so my computer originally thought Firefox was not on the system even though it was! And even though it detected my Firefox as a Trojan again, it seems to still run, must be because I added the file as an exception so fingers crossed it won't cause any more problems!

  • Yakiko, it's a good thing you couldn't uninstall because you would have lost all your bookmarks. I have years' worth of bookmarks and I sure don't won't to lose mine.

The fix you did worked for most people, it worked for me for a day then when I started up my computer this morning I was back to square one. I'm lost without Firefox and my bookmarks. It's a tragedy and I already have lost several days on this.

  • I too have the missing tlmi.dll problem, however I thought I would just try and re-install open office to fix the issue however I can longer install it regardless of what version I download. I have tried multiple versions from multiple download sites and they all come up with the following error...

Installer integrity check has failed. more info at http://nsis.sf.net/NSIS_Error. I have looked at that page and tried various remedies but nothing will work. Can someone tell me what the problem is as BitDefender seems to have done something odd to my machine.

Oddly when I look at the scan logs it doesn't show deleteing any files like tlmi.dll, so I am really confused.

    Thanks,

    Alex

    Dear user,

The mentioned problem appears if the file in question is corrupt.

As far as I remember, OpenOffice packages are digitally signed. Please right click the installer, click Properties and select the digital signature tab, if available, then check if the signature is valid.

If the signature is invalid, please upload the file to rapidshare or a similar file sharing service and PM me the link. I'll take a look ASAP.
