Resolved. I checked windows update, & the service for it & windows defender were deleted by some spyware/virus. I ran a tool from ESET to add the services back in, uninstalled bitdefender with the tool, ran all the windows updates I was missing, installed bitdefender again, and it seems to be functioning. thanks
