Thunderbird crashes win10 2025

I have Bitdefender Antivirus plus, it is up to date. My Thunderbird email client started crashing since January 2025 short after opening. I reinstalled Thunderbird. The crashes are much less frequent, and I can use the email client, but within 1-2hs I still have crashes. This was not the case before. The crash reports mentions Bitdefender. I tried to inactivate Bitdefender, and inactivate the scanning of emails, but the problem still exists. Here is the crash report from Thunderbird below. Anybody has a solution? I would appreciate.

  • Hi,

    Same situation here.

I found on a french web site :

    https://forums.mozfr.org/viewtopic.php?t=155834

    (message is from yesterday)

    a link to :

    https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1940810

Problem seems to be fairly new. I will follow the news on this. Don't know if the fault is on BitDefender or Thunderbird.

Here is my Thunderbird crash report from the "Details" tab. Going in "Module" tab, I can see "atcuf32.dll" is from BitDefender.

Hope there is a fix on any side soon.

    Eric

  • Hi Again,

In the link given above about Mozilla org, there is a comment by "Wayne Mery (:wsmwk)" saying that no crash have been seen with the version 128.6.0esr.

I did a backup of the profiles folder from %APPDATA%\Thunderbird\Profiles\ (for me : C:\Users\xxxxxxxxx\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles) and for the folder C:\Users\xxxxxxxxx\AppData\Local\Thunderbird\Profiles.

I then downloaded and installed manually the version 128.06.0esr.

    I did not un-installed BitDefender.

When I re-started Thunderbird after re-install, first the inbox folder was empty when typing my account password (I did not saved it in Thunderbird) but as soon as I typed it, the inbox messages re-appeared (little scare for a moment). All my other folders are presents and seems to contain my previous emails.

For now there is no crash anymore in Thunderbird. Read that the crash was related to the tool trying to download new update. Don't know if it was the real reason.

I then followed the link given by "Wayne Mery (:wsmwk)" saying that in the last 5 days, the number of crashes has been lowered to 20000 (this post is 5 days old).

The link is given for this is :

    https://crash-stats.mozilla.org/signature/?product=Thunderbird&signature=atcuf32.dll%20%7C%20winapi%3A%3Aum%3A%3Abits%3A%3AIBackgroundCopyManager%3A%3AGetJob&date=%3E%3D2025-01-09T14%3A20%3A00.000Z&date=%3C2025-01-14T14%3A20%3A00.000Z

I played with the search criterias (shows filters) and asked to add a filter for the version 128.06.0esr and there was no crash reported for the last 7 days.

Hope the fix has really been done for this version. Time will tell.

    Eric

  • Eric, Thank you for diving in to this and for your help! I am also now monitoring the frequency of crashes after having reinstalled the latest Thunderbird. If it gets too bad, I will roll it back…
