Post-quantum cryptography for Bitdefender users

Hello Bitdefender community ;)

I'am opening a discussion about the future of Bitdefender for individuals with regard to quantum cryptography.

Indeed, it's 2025, and some security compagnies are already using post-quantum protection for VPNs and soon password managers.

Bitefender's direct or indirect competitors, such as Nordvpn or MullvadVPN, are developing shields against quantum attacks.

Thus, some compagnies developing quantum computers, such as IBM or even the military (?), can already break encryption algorithms such as RSA and ECC, which are still widely used in 2025 for securing passwords or VPNs connections.

The market entry of quantum computers is expected for 2030 or 2035.

However, malicious actors such as hackers could target users (perhaps even before quantum computers are available) in order to spy on ordinary users or businesses.

My question is : is Bitdefender currently working on future quantum cyberthreats?

That's a very good question and I remember we had a couple of articles about this in the past, on the Bitdefender blog. I think this is the most recent one:

In short, Bitdefender is investing in cutting-edge research to counteract these looming threats. Their focus is on developing post-quantum cryptography (PQC), so encryption methods designed to withstand quantum attacks, and Bitdefender's Cryptography and Artificial Intelligence team is at the forefront of this initiative, exploring innovative encryption schemes that remain secure in a quantum computing era.

Very well. Thank you for the article. However, the article is from 2021! It's not that recent. I understand the challenges for Bitdefender to be ready for quantum attacks. However, in 2025, some compagnies are more advanced currently. Will Bitdefender be able to implement quantum solutions to counter attacks within a few months (preventively)? I'm thinking of Bitdefender's VPN, for example. But also Bitdefender SecurePass. Perhaps Bitdefender is waiting for more powerful algorithms from NIST so it can implement them with greater confidence?

Good read, thanks for sharing. As far as I know, discussions, research and blog posts about quantum computing have been around since 2018-2019, and Bitdefender is still doing active research in this field since the Cryptography and Artificial Intelligence teams have been created. Even before the dawn of AI, there was preliminary research on this as well, long before LLM models and AI adoption became mainstream. The article was just a reference point, I think it's safe to say that they have advanced their research since 2021, that's for sure. But specifically what is being done in this regard, I can't really say, since this is not exactly my area of expertise and it's also possible that certain information cannot be made public, at least not at this stage, as it is of a commercial and business nature.

We'll see later how Bitdefender will protect us with quantum resistance.

I believe Microsoft, on his side, will soon deploy new security updates (on Windows 11) to counter quantum threats using two algorithms : ML-KEM (for key exchange) and ML-DSA (for digital signatures)…
