Hi everyone,

How long will bitdefender still be supported for windows 10 after windows 10 EOL?

I'm planning to get the windows 10 ESU that gives me an other year of security patches from microsoft, this might be extended even after the 1 year ESU and then there is always zero patch as well.

Hi @Petersl,

There's no mention about Windows 10 support, since it's still quite recent and relevant, but for what it's worth, Bitdefender already extended antimalware support for both Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 until January 2026, so based on this example I think we're a long way from ending support for Windows 10, it should still be supported for a while. Any changes regarding this will surely be announced in advance.

Personally, I wouldn't give more data to Microsoft to stay another year. Or even pay 30 dollars… It's entirely possible that millions of users will migrate from Windows 10 to Linux. Furthermore, there's always a risk if Windows 10 security updates are no longer available. Bitdefender or another cybersecurity compagny wouldn't be able to protect against vulnerabilities in the Windows 10 system… Bitdefender should anticipate a security solution for Linux users and future users in 2025 or 2026 ;)

I guess we'll just have to wait and see how the operating systems market share evolves in the next period. Last time I checked, Windows was at 24.57% worldwide, while Linux was at 3.48% if I'm not mistaken. That's according to the latest figures (June 2025, by StatCounter or NetMarketShare). Some even put Windows at 70% measured over longer periods of time. Naturally, if there will be a considerable shift in user preferences, I think all cybersecurity vendors should take note. 😄
The reality is, Windows is more popular worldwide than macOS and Linux, especially in terms of desktop and laptop operating systems, and beyond home usage, enterprises, governments, and educational institutions adopted Windows early, creating an installed base that persists due to inertia and compatibility requirements. Also, many enterprise environments still rely on legacy Windows applications that are not natively compatible with macOS or Linux. It's worth mentioning that most PC manufacturers (Dell, HP, Lenovo, etc.) pre-install Windows by default, giving it a huge distribution advantage over macOS (which runs only on Apple hardware) and Linux (often requiring manual installation).

Then there's the gaming and multimedia support, and I think Windows really dominates the PC gaming market due to better driver support, DirectX (Microsoft's graphics API), and broad compatibility with games. Linux has traditionally lagged behind in gaming performance and game library availability, but as we know, it's more popular among developers, system administrators, and privacy advocates. So, it requires more technical know-how, lacks out-of-the-box support for many commercial software applications, and I think fragmentation (many distributions) makes standardization difficult for mainstream users..

But this doesn't mean that things can't change, or that Linux can't compete with Windows, it's just that I personally don't see an "exodus" to Linux happening anytime soon, especially because Windows' has this wide compatibility, a historical presence, so they have the historical first-mover advantage and legacy after all, and they benefit from mass distribution through OEMs, and I think these are some of the reasons for which it's still the default choice for the majority of global computer users..

At the end of the day, there's something for everyone I guess, since macOS and Linux do have strong niches in creative professionals and tech-savvy users, so it really depends on what you are using it for and what you actually need on a daily basis.

I would appreciate if you didn't open a new thread, and share your perspective on the existing discussion instead, since we have many discussions on this topic already. 😅👍️

As moderators we won't mind, it's just that we are doing a collective effort to maintain an organized and efficient platform, ensuring that valuable insights are consolidated within existing conversations, so it's best to avoid duplicate threads. Nevertheless, they are still out there and we do our best to moderate as efficiently as possible.

As for my personal arguments, they are based on what I've seen so far and how the market share has evolved in time, but they also come from a more strategic perspective.
