The Bitdefender Antivirus Plus application has stopped updating virus updates automatically. I have to do it manually. What is the reason for this and how can I fix the error?

To add here, there could be several reasons behind this, so a couple of things to check. Power-saving or battery optimization settings could restrict background updates, and that would be the first place to look. Then, check for VPN or network interference as well, because if a VPN is active and blocks traffic to Bitdefender's update location, then obviously the update will not go through automatically. Or, if there's an incompatible proxy server. But since you've mentioned that usually the manual update works, I think this can be ruled out, same goes for the VPN (in case you are not disconnecting it whenever you update manually while keeping it connected most of the time).
One more thing, note that corrupted definition files can also prevent automatic updates from completing. And finally, a firewall or another security app may be blocking Bitdefender’s update services.
As it can be noticed, there can be several reasons behind this, so the answer is not that simple and the resolution may depend on the specifics. But the above checklist could prove useful in the event reinstalling the product doesn't solve this update issue you are facing.
