What version of Bitdefender are you currently using? When you open the main interface, does the system tray icon appear? If the status in the main interface shows Protected, then Bitdefender is working correctly. You can also verify this by opening Windows Security and checking the status under Virus & threat protection.

I am trying to establish if BD is working or not. I used to have a small logo appear in the hidden icons. since updating I dont?

You just need to run the update, it automatically updates your installation to the latest version.
