Back up drive inaccessible after Bitdefender installation

hi, I installed Bitdefender Total Security on my Windows 11 Laptop. Since the installation, I cannot back up the laptop onto a USB drive as the back up software is reporting the drive to be inaccessible. I cannot access the drive to read files but the back up software does not work.

As a first step, I would check the notifications in Bitdefender exactly after reproducing the backup error. If Bitdefender has blocked the backup program or one of its processes, there should normally be an event there indicating which protection module was involved. That would be the first hint.

I would also recommend the following diagnostic tests:

1. Temporarily disable Ransomware Remediation, then run the backup again. Backup applications can perform large numbers of file operations in a short period of time, and this can sometimes resemble ransomware-like behaviour. 2. If that makes no difference, re-enable Ransomware Remediation and temporarily disable Advanced Threat Defense, then test the backup again. If this identifies the cause, the backup application's executable can be added to the Advanced Threat Defense module as an exceptions. 3. If neither test changes the behaviour, you could briefly test with Bitdefender Shield disabled as well. This is only for troubleshooting; all protection modules should be enabled again once the test is complete.

I wouldn't exclude the entire backup drive from scanning. It's preferable to identify the exact security module and, if necessary, exclude only the trusted backup application's .exe file.

Also, could you let us know which backup software you are using, the exact error message it displays, and whether it can back up successfully to another USB drive or another folder? That would help narrow this down considerably.

If the problem can be consistently reproduced only while Bitdefender is active, but none of the individual tests above identifies the component responsible, the next step would be to contact Bitdefender Support and reproduce the problem while generating a Bitdefender Support Tool log. The logs can show which component is denying or interfering with the operation and would allow the technical teams to investigate it properly.
