How much RAM does Bitdefender usually require to run on a Windows 11 HP laptop?

Hello. My computer was running very slow. The RAM usage was 85%. I took it to Best Buy Geek Squad who said the number resource user on all tests was my antivirus, i.e., Bitdefender. Are others experiencing this? If so, what did you do about it? What do you suggest I do? I like Bitdefender but it's really slowing down my computer. I know other factors contribute to this but Bitdefender seems to be the primary cause. What do you suggest? Thanks

To add here, I think there are many variables involved in this scenario, and you need to assess how healthy is the environment where the antivirus is installed, and also to find out if heavy tasks are taking place consistently. It's generally agreed upon that some devices may encounter a slowdown after installing an antivirus. And depending on their configuration and processor, this slowdown can be prominent or not. As per the system requirements description, system performance may also be affected on devices that have old generation CPUs. If that's not the case, there are other possible causes or things that may interefere with the proper functionality of the antivirus, or the antivirus itself may slow down a system that is already in a bad state.

The "slowdown" topic has been discussed on many occasions, and every discussion I participated in over the years has revealed something insightful. So far, we learned that slowdown can occur if other security solutions are installed, if the device is already infected, if unwanted programs run in the background, taking up disk space and memory, if the hard disk drives are too fragmented, if data is corrupted, if hardware is obsolete or faulty, if the device is damaged in any other way, etc. I think we must keep in mind that not all devices are built the same, they don't function in the same way, some may have more resources than others, some are better configured than others, etc.

Bottom line is, there are of course steps you can take to improve your system's performance, and Scott shared a useful article in this regard. Check it out and if these recommendations don't yield the desired outcome, then perhaps a deeper investigation is required. If the behaviour persists, I think it should be investigated by the Support engineers who can analyze logs coming from the affected machine and advise on the next steps.

Usually this type of issue can be fixed, if the system requirements are met and the device is healthy and compatible.

I see it this way: the more actions or tasks occurring simultaneously on the device, the harder the antivirus has to work, as it must analyze everything that happens to ensure the system remains secure. In short, it never sleeps..

But generally speaking, Bitdefender is optimized to work efficiently and should not put a strain on the system resources of a well maintained PC.

Just for a point of reference, here is where I'm at with these specs. I'm running Bitdefender Antivirus Plus on a Windows 10 Pro HP desktop PC. I'm not sure what your laptop spec are? I have a laptop with 8 GB of Ram that I needed to use something else, as with Firefox running multiple tabs and maybe one light app running in the background, was getting into the higher Ram use levels, 85 - 92%. It  just depends on your specs and whatever else you may have installed and running.

On install, Bitdefender will use more resources as it "machine learns" your system, which can take 3-4 days depending on your use. After that, it should settle down. I haven't had this PC running for about 4 days, so Bitdefender may be catching up. For me, it can be as low as 285 MB of memory, up to 450. It's usually around the 350 - 385 mark.
