Critical Error On Startup

I am running BitDefender Total Security 2009 on Windows XP MCE (all updates installed). Every time I start my computer I get a critical error that terminates bitdefender and it won't restart. Here is the error:

BitDefender encountered problems while processing the files below:

C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\bdc6.tmp

Do you want to send these files to BitDefender labs for analysis?

the number at the end of the filename changes every time and sometimes it's a letter (bdc7.tmp, bdcC.tmp, etc). I've tried deleting everything in the temp folder and restarting and I get the error again.

After I click 'OK' and submit the error, even if I choose to re-start the service, nothing happens. I can't even get in it to change the settings or shut it down to restart the program. If I re-boot, i go through it all again.

Please help!!!

EDIT: I started having this problem after I installed Alcohol 120%.

If I click no BitDefender crashes and shows the send error report to Bitdefender.

If I wait to long my system slows to a snails pace and I can barely move the mouse!

I am experiencing the same. I submitted all of the dump files to tech support and it was like sending them into a black hole.

I also asked for a refund in accordance to their 30 day guarantee 3 times and no response.

I am not pleased with their support at all.

I get have a similar issue, but it doesn't say it's a problem with Threat Scanner... it only says critical error. Everytime I reboot or restart the program, it just crashes to the Report Wizard. I've tried to repair and reinstall multiple times, but it didn't change anything.

Tech Support was unhelpful.

I have the same problem - maybe the support guys can step up and help out here it's obviously an issue. I think I'm going to get my money back and reinstall McAfee - at least it never crashed on me.

I've had it for a week now - been sending everyone to the lab analysis as recommended, I've emailed BitDefender about, I sat on the phone for 25 minutes on hold (I would have stayed longer yet I was on a cell phone which costs me minutes and after 25 minutes, I don't think anyone was going to answer).

I've looked on Google to find a solution and came up empty.

It's not good to have an antivirus not working for a week up to 10 days...

Click the "Reply" button, under the reply page writing section you can see a field called Attachements and in the right side 2 buttons ,one that helps you to navigate to the files from your computer and another button for file uploading.Also in the same area you will see a field called Manage Current Atachements use that to place the file into your post ,just choose the atachement (already uploaded)you want from there.You can upload files of a maximum 2 mb.If the file is bigger use a free file hosting service and place a link towards it into your post.

When you archive something with winrar ,winzip ,winace you have an option to put a pass to the archive,just look in the program interface (in Winrar for example ,when you want to add a file to archive ,in its panel ,you will look for the tab Advanced ,where you will notice a button for password ).The pass should be infected

This is how I was able to solve my problem (your millage may vary)

reboot into safe mode (press F8 every 1 second after computer beeps when turning on)
START | Run
msconfig
click OK
Choose "diagnostic"
Go to the services tab across the top
Click the "Manufacturer" column title to sort by manufacturer
Check the box beside each Microsoft service, leave all the rest unchecked
Click OK
Click RESTART
Once rebooted, you will get a message that configuration changes have been made with MSCONFIG -- just click OK
The MSCONFIG program then pops up... choose "NORMAL" and click OK
Click "EXIT WITHOUT RESTART"
START | Run
%temp%
Click OK
Temp folder shows, select all files (CTRL+A) and delete (SHIFT+DEL) -- or use CCleaner to clean temp files...
START | Run
services.msc
Click OK
Start the "BitDefender Desktop Update Service" and the "BitDefender Virus Sheild" services
Open BitDefender 2009 Internet Security from the START menu under Programs
Perform a manual update
Reboot

Hopefully this works for you, as it did for me. Historically, BD is an awesome program... never really had to call support about anything before. This problem is probably one of 2 or 3 I've ever had... installed on over 50 systems.

Don't know if it helps anyone, but this problem cropped up for me when I swapped harddrives, and put the PageFile on a secondary drive... (could be coincidence)

I did as Dizzy Coder said - however this is an HP with Vista on it, and F8 Safe mode doesn't seem to be an option.

Once I went into diagnostic, changed it to diagnostic startup, rebooted, then cleaned out temp file... I wasn't able to do an update due to some proxy error.

So I went back to a normal startup, and once again the errors started popping up;

windows/temp/bdcFCD3.tmp

yet also a new one --

program files/HP/Digital Imaging/Bin/hpqddusr.dll

not a temp file!

and no, I hadn't added anything since... or nothing HP related. Still, I shouldn't have to worry about installing programs in fear of my antivirus going awry due to the fact.

So my bit defender is still not working - going on 2 weeks of no antivirus.

Not to be an arse, but I have always used Norton before, and sure Norton might be weak in relation to AV, so the experts say, I never had a single issue like this in a dozen years. and when I call Norton, I get someone. I've tried contacting technical support via phone and waited 20+ minutes but I'm on a cell and it's costing me minutes. I also left a ticket.

should I just remove BitDefender and try reinstalling it?

I hope to have an answer. Whatever I know that BitDefender will not reimburse me, and it's only $75, but it's what I have on my computer which is very important - even if it just might be pictures of my dog, and I'm feeling really vulnerable at this point.

And I'm really unsastified with BitDefender. This is going to be the last time I listen to Top 10 experts.

Yeah dude... when in doubt, uninstall/reinstall... I believe there is a "repair" option as well... BTW: if safe mode is tough to get into you *CAN* use MSCONFIG on the "Boot" tab using "minimal /safeboot" -- but I only popped into safe mode b/c the hung up bitdefender was not allowing me to do much of anything and safe mode is a great place to start...

also, if you try F8 and it doesn't work for you, there's also this tip:

Restart the computer. Immediately after the screen goes blank for the first time, or after the BIOS post ends, start taping the F8 key repeatedly. The Windows Advanced Options menu appears. If the menu does not appear, restart the computer and try again. If the Keyboard has a F-Lock key, it may be necessary to press it first - QUICKLY before pressing the F8 Key. This will have to be done quickly before tapping the F8 key repeatedly.

The Windows Advanced Options Menu shown next should appear

UPDATE: my solution is not permanent and may have been fluke. I am now re-exhibiting these same issues. Some information that may help discern a pattern(?):

tried repair, failed -- used the removal tool, reinstalled, no joy.

If BD 2009 suite gives you problems use BD 2008 suite instead,it should work.

There will be a new BD 2009 build very soon.Let s hope it will be close to perfection <img class= " />

nope, false alarm. It is when the agent is not loaded that you can successfully run the program, scan, etc. As soon as you run BDAGENT.EXE, bam! error.

installing 2008 is a viable solution but it's a pain, and your (well, mine anyway) IS2009 key won't work with 2008

as a programmer, I empathize with the development team.

Hi, I'm having the same problem and found out something that may help.

I'm using my computer with an user that is not admin, but has admin rights. So I try to login after restart as admin, and bitdefender works OK. So I log out and in this time with my non admin user and the problem was again.

So if i run my computer as admin, antivirus works, if I run it form my other non admin user with admin rigth it doesn't. This makes me think that the problem may have something to do with windows user, I not sure. How many of you are using non admin users?

I'm using Windows XP pro SP2.

PD: Sory for my english I'm not American.

Hi, I have some new info. I have done this:

1) In my non admin user I went to msconfig and disable bdagent (c:\program files\bitdefender\bitdefender 2009\bdagent.exe) at init.

2) After system restart, I went to folder c:\program files\bitdefender\bitdefender 2009\ , left click on dbagent.exe then run as, y choose admin, I enter the pass, and then antivirus start working fine in my non admin user.

Problem: I have to manualy start antivirus each time I reboot (doing like step 2), but antivirus works.

So again it looks like, at least in my case, that bitdefender problems has something to do with user profiles.

I'm sending an e-mail to support with this to see if it helps to solve the problem.
