Am Using Bitdefender Total Security


But the Tray Icon next to the clock is often missing when I just boot up my PC , I do see that B defender is loaded but NO tray Icon ?


Is there a solution besides Uninstall / Reinstall please ,because I have done that so many times already I have lost count !


I have to reboot the pc everytime,and hope it shows up it happens 1 in 3 times


I have installed BD on a clean PC with NO other installed EVER before !


Am having this problem for months already and have asked before http://forum.bitdefender.com/index.php?sho...ic=9159&hl= but no reply/solution ,Read that recently some new "Ädmins" Catalin Salgau visit the forum and seem to be helpfull/knowledbale so thought try Again ,


Its really frustating BD still doesnot work right after so MANY Months !


Or Can I change my license to version 10 and go Back ???,


Hope a reply without turning my computer upside down

  • you can go back to the V10 version if you want to, just ask the bd customer service department for the license key switch. at this point, are you using the 2008 or 2009 product?

  • ty Rsenic for your reply appriciated I first used TS 2009 but went back to TS 2008 because I had too many problems ,


    Now use TS 2008 for a few months but as mentioned the Tray Icon is often missing when I starrt up my pc and the Tune up just like the 2009 version doesnot work,


    For example when I try to clean up internet files just like with TS 2009 I get the message : Task abortted by user ? and ofcourse I didnot abort


    Find duplicate files I cant even select files ?


    But that doesnot matter alot ....the Tray Icon often not starting up is really annoying...


    Uninstall and reinstall as mentioned before have done atleast 30 or 40 times so that doesnot work


    I have contacted the helpdesk months ago and they suggested to go back to TS 2008 which I did and


    that they will contact me when the problems were solved and I can install TS 2009 Again


    But now a couple of Months further and still NO reply from them.............,


    If you or Catalin Salgau have a solution that would be appriciated

  • The issue with the 'Task aborted by user' is a known issue for the TS08 product and it will not be fixed, as bd has switched to 2009. But that is only a visual error, as the process will go through to the end and clean all the files.


    This can be verified by performing the Temporary Internet File Cleaner again, as you will notice that the number of deleted items is reduced to 0 the second time you run it, thus meaning that the previous action was performed properly.


    do you have the bd icon on your desktop? and if yes, does the main window appear when you double left click on it?

    I have installed Bitdefender TS on a brand new PC with NO previous installed (never) other AV programme(s), Even better I have installed Bdefender first without installing any other programmes.


    And have uninstalled with the uninstaller tool from Bitdefender also atleast 10-20 times when Uninstalling/reinstalling again.

    1. this you mean when using Bitdefender TS 2009 ?,Because when I try this at TS 2008 I always get the message "aborted by User"


    But now I know atleast this problem will never be fixed on TS2008 ,Tx for making that clear,a pitty but saves frustation,Do wonder why nobody else told that sooner though


    But hope the bugs from 2009 TS will be fixed sooner then before the 2010 Version will come out though.

  • Try searching the registry and delete entries with the name bitdefender 2008 and anything else with the bitdefender name but take a backup of your registry before.

  • Made a copy of the registry and looked in it there are tons of Bitdefender names ,But as I have a new PC find it tricky to edit the register and will wait and keep it in mind as a last attempt but Ty for the suggestion


    but that shouldnot be neccesary when I install a Bought software produkt and install it on a brand new and Clean Pc .


    Am an reasanable advanced User and have been using BD for 5 or 6 Years but do think editing the register is the last solution


    Hope Rsenic or Catalin Salgau have another solution !

  • Hi again.If you found as you say lots of entries(without having bitdefender installed) i think that you should delete them but if someone else has a better idea please post it because i want to go to v2009 but i can't.There are a lot of bugs.

    G'Day kungfu,


    It would be good to know what your OS (Operating System) is and at what level is your new installation at?


    If XP ? is it at SP3 (Service Pack 3) and did you do all other updates through either Windows or Microsoft Update ?


    In case it is XP any SPx (1, 2, or 3) XP has had a major issue with loading the TSR's ( Terminate Stay Resident) programs (Icons that appear next to the Date and time on the right of the Start Bar, for as long as I can remember.


    The TSR's (loaded by the "Run" parameters in the registry, load OK if you only have a few and of which most are or belong to Microsoft. If you have other 3rd party TSR's that you load, they will intermittently fail to display their icons correctly - however they will have loaded if you check the "Task Manager" (right mouse click on empty space on Start Bar and in popup meny click on Task Manager - then "Precesses") to show you what is running on your system)


    Other issue with the icons showing correctly is your settings, (right mouse click on empty space on Start Bar and in popup menu click on "Properties") in the popup properties window, un-tick the "Group similar taskbar buttons" and the "Hide inactive icons" - tick all others.


    Also use a good registry cleaner - CCleaner has a Registry tool which is good - and Uniblue RegistryBooster 2009 I prefered the previous RegistryBooster 2 - has a good registry cleaner and Optimizer, besides RegCure and Registry Mechanic. The Run entries are sometimes loaded with junk from bad installations like the Run and Run once entries which these Registry cleaners remove for you. UniBlue does a good job of it but it is not free like the CCleaner and the others are also not free.


    It is annoying not to see all of the TSR's as we refer to them to show us that the PC has loaded correctly and yes, sometimes I wait 35 seconds before I loggon to the User in XP and it seems that the TSR's do then all load and show their icons.


    Try these, then reboot and see what happens !

    kungfu ,are you using jv16 Power Tools or used it sometime ago while BD was installed?


    If yes uninstall it and reinstall BD again.


    Your problem is a registry problem, a fresh Windows install will cure it ... and do not installl jv16 (does some strange things to the task bar <img class=" /> ).

    In case of My OS that is Vista Sp1 ,I have mentioned that in Post # 6 but understand you cant read everything and should have put all info in 1 post

    I have done that.


    There is ofcourse No Bitdefender Icon to check/uncheck but the 4 others : Clock/Volume/Netwerk/Energy which also not always load some but the strange thing I cant even always put a Check at for instance the Volume so that it is visible at the Taskbar ,Cant "tick" when Volume isnot visible the Volume ?


    I have NEVER used a registry cleaner before thus NO jv16 Power Tools (Ty for your reply too Sm3K3R ) as I thought that wasnot neccesary as I have mentioned before installed Bitdefender on a Brand new PC and the first thing after updating Windows Vista was Bitdefender Total Security 2008 , I have updated the 2008 Version a couple months ago to the 2009 Version but had so many problems and after emailing with the Support and sending them all sort of files besides the usual also very compliated with the content of my complete pc went back to the 2008 Version as they suggested and they would contact me when I could return to the 2009 Version but that is also 2 or 3 Months ago and havenot heard yet from them,I still have my Ticket #


    As said have bought a new Pc and spend my hardworking money on it am not a millionaire cant buy a new one and am afraid to completly mess it up with a registry tool but have taken a look at the CCleaner Registry tool which seems good ,from what I have researched on the Internet today ,


    But if I make a copy of my register and it goes all bad is it if I put the copy back of my register my Pc is the same as before ?,In other words is it SAFE to do that ?,if I was working on a 5 Year old pc wouldnot hesitate but hope you understand my dilemma.


    I havenot tried waiting 35 seconds before clicking on my User account yet but that I am going to try first ,

  • Hi.I have an idea but i am not sure.At win xp when you right click the start button and go to properties there is an option that says"hide inactive icons"and a button on the right that says customize.When you click it there is a list of icons and you can select if you want to hide them or not but i don't know if there is an option at vista.If there is see what says at bitdefender icon.

    Vista, Vista = a pain in the rear! - Of all the Vista installations I have performed, 73% of my customers have requested it to be wiped and their old XP put on their new PC's. Microsoft in recent published articles has even agreed that vista has many bugs and faults and is attempting to accelerate the development of their new replacement for Vista "Vista replacement scheduled for 2009" and "Bill Gates: Vista replacement “Sometime in 2009″ - No other Microsoft Operating system has ever prompted such response and so fast in acknowledgement of public complaints and bad reviews to replace it and acknowledged that it is bad - so you take it from there.


    As to the installation you have of Vista, (? I hope it is Vista Business or Ultimate) installed.


    Now for the bad news, In Summation of the issues you have reported, and this is from my vista installation experience, I would suggest that you have a bad installation of the Vista OS. I have had similar experiences and when I see and notice peculiar behaviour in the functions, display, or software installations, I scrub the whole installation and carefully start from scratch ensuring that all parts of the installation are custom selected (Custom selection is for advanced or experienced Users) in every step of the (all) installation of the OS and later any software.


    If you perform this installation procedure, please read it carefully and do not install any Internet Security or other Anti-Virus programs until we indicate to do so, this is very important as some of the installation for software and updates is best performed without interference which security software does as a consequence of its native


    function and tasks. !!


    Also note that any Installation CD's or DVD's used are original manufacturers releases and if a copy of any installation media is used, it was scanned for viruses on another PC system to ensure that it is virus and parasite free !!


    When the Operating system loads, in the final stages it does offer user intervention to determine the final parameters, which you should decide upon and enter them accordingly for your specific use, Region (location) Registration, etc.


    When the OS is loaded and during the installation, PLEASE disable the Windows Firewall, Automatic Updates and do NOT install or select to install any of the Windows Anti-virus or any other Security Software that they offer!


    Take particular notice of any of these types of programs they will offer to install in the Windows Updater and if you find any of them, un-select the option and do NOT install them. Also do not install the Search v4 (in the Software update section) which I consider to be a nuisance and interferes with the function of too many other installed software programs, i.e. has a bad interface and interactive disruption with other software.


    If you did accidentally install any of them, they can be un-installed and removed. Un-install in XP, just go to the Add/Remove in the control Panel.


    After the OS is installed, there is no need to worry or be concerned at this stage about Virus infections or other rogue infiltration of your PC and 1stly proceed to install drivers that need to be installed for the Motherboard (from the manufacturers CD or DVD) making sure that you do re-boot each time you are requested to do so by the installation process or procedure when performing any Software, driver or update installation.


    After all the required Hardware drivers are installed, we then install any Microsoft software that the customer has or has purchased.


    After that, ensuring that you have an Internet connection, we now get on to the Windows Update.


    I put this in for the other forum Member if they use XP.


    If you use XP, NEVER using Express and always choosing Custom, and in the selection choose to install the Microsoft Update, as this then will update the OS and other Microsoft software which is installed. Running the Now Microsoft Update is automatically chosen and runs in place of the Windows Update which only updated the OS. This now is run until no updates for the OS, software or hardware drivers remains. Remember if you did accidentally install any program we did not want, they can be un-installed and removed. Un-install in XP, just go to the Add/Remove in the control Panel.


    Vista runs the updates in Microsoft mode and finds and selects all the required updates for you, perform and allow it to install all the updates. Again you will need to perform the updates for the OS and other drivers vista needs, several times. After that chose any other updates you may want in the Update Options. Remember however that we do NOT want the Search v4, or any Home Security or any of the Microsoft Anti-Virus or other protection software installed. If you did accidentally install any of them, they can be un-installed and removed. "Uninstall or change a program - Windows Vista Help"


    Now we get to the Mother board manufacturers site to see if there are any BIOS or other driver and utility updates for the Motherboard interface and relating to the OS - be careful here as the wrong OS updates can render the installation useless. Most of the newer Motherboard manufacturers have a utility for this purpose and will update the BIOS and other drivers for you - please read the instructions carefully! and very carefully read the instruction for any BIOS updates using DOS or other Flash utilities ensuring that NO Firewall or Anti-Virus program is active !!


    PLEASE NOTE so far we have NOT installed any Security or Anti-Virus or any other Anti- anything programs on the PC System !!!


    OK, After all this, we now check the parameters of the system and its functions, such as the Display, Task Bar, disabling any screen savers (ours are work machines not entertainment units, besides there are better thing on TV to watch) and check any other parameters that control the appearance or behaviour of the PC before we install any software.


    After that, and with No! BDIS or any other Security or Anti-anything installed we now proceed to perform custom installations of all required software applications.


    Custom installations allow decisions of parameters and functions, installation folder choices etc, to be decided at the time of installation and not after. Important to remember is that default installations in 99% of instances, do not install the programs fully (all parts of the program) on to the Hard Drive. Microsoft Office is a typical example of this and unless a custom installation with choosing to "Install all on the Hard Drive" is chosen for every part of the suite, it is not fully installed and will have functions you may wish to perform, missing and needing the original CD or DVD to be re-inserted before it will perform the task.


    Custom installations also allow us to un-select any parts of the installation setup where 3rd party or other software is normally automatically installed which may be older than already installed later versions and prevents duplicate installations of the same software or utilities that they may use.


    After the software application programs have all been installed remembering that we re-booted after every installation, cleaned out the Temp files and Trash folder content We then perform some final maintenance and then Install any Security suite of our choice.


    The reason we re-booted after every software application installation is, as this ensures that it was correctly installed and did not cause any conflict with any other previous installed software. If it did, it is now easier to troubleshoot the 1 error rather than attempting to try this if we had installed 5 or more at once and not knowing which may have caused the conflict or other error.


    OK, so we install the Security suite last and it must be a Comprehensive Security Suite as they are needed to protect you against the many threats that now exist with the Cable and ADSL fast Broadband connections we have. No Anti-virus program alone will afford you sufficient protection while browsing or communicating on the Internet. AND MOST IMPORTANT IS TO REMEMBER TO ONLY INSTALL ONE OF THESE SECURITY SUITES !!


    Just remember that not one of these type of programs afford you 100% protection - it's on my wish list.


    There are many details which we implement in the options and function structure on our or our customers PC"s i.e. every installed software package is setup with the optimal options to ensure max performance and functionality. We do this as the defaults are badly chosen and do nothing for the ability of the program itself. Although these may be user choices, its like selling you a car and not setting up the transmission, so we do this as part of the PC installation - Custom Installations ONLY with parameters set-up correctly to ensure that the program will function as expected.


    While I'm on the subject of st-up, I am aslo reminded that some of the default functions (Actions they perform automatically with pop-up warnings etc) in both BDIS and BDTS are sometimes a nuisance and not needed.


    E.G. The Mallard scan. If we have "Real-time Protection" enabled and the Anti-Virus etc files are updated by BD every couple of hours, on the various protection parameters, I don't think we need to perform a continuing scheduled scan for Malware every couple of hours or days, which by the way interferes with the performance and other program functions and slows down the PC.


    Maintenance and optimisation, on our Workstations because they perform on a weekly basis what the average user performs in 6 month, is performed weekly including OS, software and driver updates.


    Virus scanning is also performed on each system weekly and intermittently at random if any suspicious infection type behaviour is noticed.


    The reason we do not schedule automatic scans is that some tale a long tome on out large Hard Drives taking even longer with six on each workstation and will interfere with any other scheduled automatic utility function such as a Hard disk Optimisation program and is the easiest way to corrupt and stuff up you installation when the cross paths. E.G. the optimiser attempting to optimise the Anti-Virus program executable file while it is being used = System CRASH !!


    OK, this should give you a better understanding of where to start and what to consider in performing IT / PC related tasks and should enlighten you to remedy your issues with a wiser choice.

    Excellent ,it should be made sticky for everybody to see and understand that an OS install is not so simple as it looks and that every step in drivers installation (especially) must be done properly , otherwise strange issues may occur with diferent software.Installing the OS and then throwing at it every software we got ,in random order may generate strange problems although, theoretically ,it should be OK.


    On the other hand BD may react strange to hardware tweaks-tightened RAM timings may create strange on-demand scanner problems (for ex. the scanner may refuse to close,start or pause properly or it may stall unexplainable) .So always before asking help with BD, users should check the hardware and software configuration .


    Also trial the BD version you want to use ,before you buy and not after!

    I do have recovery disc which I have made when I used my pc for the first time so I can return to the state the same state when I bought it, Ofcourse they are original manufacturers releases


    I will print your tips/hints out as it wouldnot be the first time I,ve seen a topic disappear


    Will keep it in mind.and report with the result.


    You should go work for Bitdefender ;) at the Support.

    @ Sm3K3R Vista is already used by more then 50 % of the users overhere ,and in other Countries even more ,every pc overhere is sold in combination with Vista ,I do agree with pcbugfixer that it isnot as stable as XP but as so many people have Vista ,Bitdefender SHOULD be compatible with Vista and since SP1 has been released there have been many improvements/Bugs fixes,


    Ofcourse BD hasnot have the manpower Microsoft has but a bit :D faster fixing the bugs Bitdefender has , the Bying/Paying Customers can/should Expect, some stuff take already Months thats ridiculous ,Do really am afraid that the 2009 version will finally be fixed at the time version 2010 comes out :wub:


    And you cant expect to check your pc configuration so that every software/videocard/soundcard etc to match Bitdefender needs before you buy ??


    And lots of people dont know they can try before you buy, besides that, as mentioned before I have used Bdefender for 6 years and didnot thought a try out would ne neccasary......,boy was I wrong ,

    I have to reply to your last post and comment on some of the remarks.


    1. RE: Vista User %. - One of the only reasons that there are so many, is the fact that Microsoft made a sweatheart deal with all the PC Manufacturers and gave them Vista at such a low price (very very low) that it was to their advantage to pre-load Vista on all the new Laptop and Desktop machines that were released, and we had no choice in the matter. Some of the Laptops that were released and built, by these manufacturers, were specifically built with no compatibility or drivers for XP and therefor XP could not be loaded on them as the manufacturer had no XP drivers for the Laptops and some of the Desktops.


    The choice that we did have if we wanted to have XP on the new Laptop or Desktop, was to purchase a XP sp2 CD which was an additional cost at around US$165.00 (AU$235.00) Retail price for an OEM version. This to a lot of customers was un-expectable, and faced with the no driver support issue. So with a good sales pitch, - The latest, the greatest since sliced bread, ... etc., customers were conned into excepting Vista and where greatly disappointed with the file and system structure and constant un-necessary popups, as well as the Access Denied popup messages when they navigated the Folders on their hard drive. (Vista was the same Car with a new paint job (graphic appearance) and the File system structure was bastardized.)


    2. The registry cleanup is an option, you can try that 1st and if it fixes the issue then you obviously save yourself a lot of work. At the same time consider the pro's and con's in fixing a already damaged system -V- a new clean installation!


    3. The installation of any software singularly could not be held to ransom or said to be responsible for not being compatible with the any particular OS, in that, any other installed Software could be responsible for the latest installation not working correctly.


    I did give examples of this in some other posts when I mentioned that Users should ONLY install 1 (one) Security Suite on their PC's, ensuring that all others are un-installed before installing any of the BD products. Included in the other category are the Windows Internet Security, Firewalls and their Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool, which Microsoft installs as part of their initial installation of Vista or includes these in their Updates which few are aware of that this is done. However there is the removal / un-install tool that will clear them out, While I am on the un-install subject, it is worth mentioning that a large % of Users believe that by deleting the folder(s) in which software is installed that by this action the program is un-installed ? - contrary to this believe, is the fact that it is not and this action only further corrupts the setup, Registry and general behavior of the PC on which this error (deleting folders instead of un-installing the unwanted software) was made.


    However there are other Trojan, Worm, Adware, Malware scanners that can be installed besides BD products and although BD suggest that they shold not due to some incompatibility issues, it should be remembered that this is the case only if these also run as part of the active boot-up and run as a TSR (Terminate Stay Resident - Icon loaded on right side of Start Bar = is active running program) or we load one of their components like the AdWatch from AdAware 2008 or the Tea Timer from SpyBot Search and Destroy while a BD Security Suite is active as a TSR. Note however that running their scanners does NOT interfere with BDIS or BDTS installed, and I do not care about the popup warnings from any of them warning against the other = crap, just carefully read what I have posted regarding this. They run very well, all of them, on all my Workstations - thanks, and I / we use them to double check the performance of the other !!


    NB: AdAware is a legit program (scanner) against Adware, and other parasites and is not Adware.


    4. As to not being aware that you should Trial 1st, there are enough buttons to suggest a Trial or Try 1st and if the User is not smart enough to realize that they can get a free month by trying the software 1st, what can we say? :wub:

    i am having the same problem on a clean XP install: SP3, drivers, updates and "trusted" software before installing BD. tried registry cleaners and then reinstalling BD with no avail.

    Please check your Device Manager \ Hardware Tab and tell me if you have and Devises listed with an " ! " or " ? " mark, and or any open device line entries ? Normal Hardware will have a [+] box in front of a device entry, if there is an issue, it will be [-] with a 2nd line under the device listing and most likely may have a ?, ! or red X on the icon of the open line.


    With BD un-install did you use any other BD tools to un-install BD ? - if not then un-install BD?? 2009 re-boot, run the BD un-install tool, re-boot and then try the installation of BD?? 2009 again.


    Is this a Trial of BD that you are installing or do you have a Key and Registered BD Account ? If you are attemptiong to un-install A Trial and are using it twice, it will not work


    Registry cleaners only clean out general registry errors, empty line entries and the like, and not specific software installations errors, for this we use the Publishers Tools to clean the publishers software installation registry entries or rogue remnants.

    thank you for your time.


    as a matter of fact, there is an "unknown device" in the "other device" tree. i have installed all the hardware drivers i am aware of. the windows update/update driver tool (online) doesn't come up with any hits.


    i installed bd2009 yesterday; i had no problems with installation and there was a bd tray icon. when i booted this morning, i noticed the bd tray icon was missing. i tried rebooting and running a reg scanner. i uninstalled bd (using the bd uninstaller), rebooted, re-downloaded bd2009, reinstalled and rebooted. the tray icon is still missing.


    i have a key and registered bd account. i have been using bd2009 on my previous xp sp3 install for the last few months without any problems.

    Please check your Device Manager \ Hardware Tab and tell me if you have and Devises listed with an " ! " or " ? " mark, and or any open device line entries ? Normal Hardware will have a [+] box in front of a device entry, if there is an issue, it will be [-] with a 2nd line under the device listing and most likely may have a ?, ! or red X on the icon of the open line.


    With BD un-install did you use any other BD tools to un-install BD ? - if not then un-install BD?? 2009 re-boot, run the BD un-install tool, re-boot and then try the installation of BD?? 2009 again.

    1. Un-install the corrupt Device by right mouse clicking on it and then left mouse clicking on Un-install, then close the Hardware and Device manager and re-boot.


    2. During the reboot and when the Desktop is loaded, you will see either a New Hardware detected poppup window appear -DO NOTHING AT THAT TIME - wait until all the usual TSR's have loaded and when you think everything else has loaded, then action the detection window by following the prompt for 1st option "yes to this time and then again on 2nd option screen to 1st option etc.


    This pop-up should tell you the drivers it is attempting to install (make a note of it while you can) If this fails to correct the device problem, then perform these task again of un-installing the device - HOWEVER click on the properties of it and copy any information that is available and post it in reply on this forum topic and I will see if I can help fix the device issue.


    The logic of fixing any Device or Main Hardware and OS installation issues, is akin to suggesting that we cannot correctly determine the speed of a car if it is only running on 4 of its 6 cylinders - got the idea! - so we fix the engine and its components 1st, then either these issues will correct themselves or we can then apply the correct fix for it knowing that the engine is running correctly.


    when you reply - please do not use the Quote / Reply - Option(s) of the post - just use the ADDREPLY and reply using the members name in the 1st line i.e. Reply to "members" or as I do, use a signature style greeting like G'Day bigben - saves space and easyier to read rather than wade past a lot of duplication.

    again thank you for your time.


    the found new hardware wizard says it is trying to find "software for: Unknown" and cannot find any appropriate drivers.


    the only information given in the properties is irrelevant, this is from the "General" tab:


    Unknown Device

    my old xp (on a separate hard drive) also has an "Unknown device", but ive installed and used bd2009 for the last few months without any problems. thus, i don't think the unknown device conflicting with bd2009. i have been aware of this unknown device for a while now, but since all of my software and hardware is working without issue, i decided not to fix that which is not broken.


    my specs:


    Pentium4 524 OC to 3.8 Ghz


    Abit NI8-SLI (nFource4 chipset)


    EVGA 8600 GTS


    2GB DDR2 4200 Corsair OC to 600mhz


    3x 300GB hard drives

    G'Day bigben,


    This is one of the motherboard drivers for your system, I think, that is not loading correctly. i.e. the driver is the wrong one for your OS or the install file is corrupt.


    Please contact the Abit Manufacturer with this issue - giving them the details you posted here. There are 3 areas that involve this failure and Abit should be able to solve this issue for you, or reload the Driver CD or DVD and re-install the drivers all the drivers for your OS (XP) for the motherboard.


    Your Motherboard web site NI8-SLI GR and their Technical Support just fill in the details on the form and they will reply to you.


    In the mean time you could check out the drivers on the motherboard page to ensure you have the latest installed.

    thank you for helping, you rock my socks!


    i believe the unknown is the on-board raid controller. since i'm not using raid on this pc, i didn't install the drivers for this device and would prefer not to. (why fix something that isn't broken?)


    now that that is resolved, do you have any insight into what's causing the bd2009 tray icon to disappear?

    I also have a Moto on my web site that says,

    In this instance however, the issue is akin to suggesting that we don't need a spare tyre in the boot. Also you need to remember that in your registry reside approx 43% of references that you may never use, however they need to be there for the system to function correctly for when a program looks for a reference point of a particular function then these entries will tell the program what to (if it is installed or used) or not to do (if it is not installed or not used) all part of the algorithm (instruction codes) of the programs and functions all contained in the Registry.


    The Registry is akin to the Human Registry of Births (Program Installations) Marriages (Program and system Compatibility) Divorces (Program and Utility Un-installation) and Deaths (Program Malfunctions) and if any part of this is not correct then the entries also malfunction.


    OK so much for the words of wisdom, now to the icon issue.


    Please print these instructions!


    BTW. Click always = left mouse click and obviously right mouse click is to bring up an options or other Menu of the particular item we want to control and perform an action upon.


    Also, If your system is still set to double clicking, then you need to click on where I say point to, and point to means place mouse courser on item only (do not click on it) which if you use single click then it should highlight the item and open the next structured function of that item = Menu) - This option can be changed in the "Windows Explorer" -> Tools -> folder Options in the Click Items as follows, Place a dot in the "Single click to open an item (point to select) and a dot in "Underline icons titlesonly when I point to them" - then click apply , then click OK


    1. Count the total number of TSR Icons on the right for me and make a note of these Number of will do. I rust that in the TaskBar options you have un-ticked the "Hide Inactive Icons" option so that we do see all active TSR's If you have not done this, do so now - right click on "Start" then click on "Properties" then click on the Taskbar tab at the top, then only have the following checked (ticked) and un-tick all the others; Tick = "Lock the taskbar", Keep the taskbar on top of other windows", "Show Quick Launch" and at the bottom, "Show the clock" - untick all others!


    2 Now click Apply (which is now in black test because we have made alterations) and when the apply has turned grey (text is greyed out) then click on [OK]


    3. Please make a note of the number of TSR's that now appear. - the BD icon may at this time miraculously appear - if it does not, go to the next steps.


    Step A. - I want you to log off, Click on Start - then "Log Off Username" (username, replace this with the name given in this entry which is the default user name loaded)


    Step B. - In the popup log off options window click on the orange log off button with the key symbol, this then logs the current user off and brings up a log ON window.


    Step C. - When the Log On window appears, just log on to the same user that you normally use - If you only have one user setup than that will be the only user displayed on which you now click and allow the system to load the XP Desktop.


    Step D. - Allow the system to load correctly - take notice that while the cursor shows the waiting symbol (hour glass) it is still loading - other method of detecting this is to hold or place (do not click during this action!!) the mouse cursor on the empty space of the Start Bar and if it is still loading, the cursor will show the hour glass - other detection is to look at the Hard Disk light (usually orange or red) on the front of your PC (if working correctly) next to the power light (usually green) which is on all the time, and while the HD light is flickering, the desktop is still being loaded - so wait until the light stop flickering or you believe that all the TSR's have in fact loaded on the right side of the Start Bar!


    - the BD icon may at this time miraculously appear


    - if it does not, Re-boot the PC


    - and when you are at the desktop go to the next steps.


    - but check if the BD icon has loaded !


    Step U. - I want you to go to the Task Manager, to do so, right click on empty space on Start Bar, then click on Task Manager


    Step V. - Now click on the "Processes" tab at the top, then click on the empty space next to the "Image Name" column header - this puts all active running programs in alphabetical order so it becomes easier to find what we need to look for - and now click on the entry for "bdagent.exe" and then click on the [End Process] button on the bottom right side of the Task Manager window. and click on The YES button in the popup window asking for confirmation of our action.


    Step W. - Now X out (close) the Task Manager window.


    Step X. - Now go to your Programs (Click on Start - point to Programs) and find the original entry of the bitdefender shortcut folder (menu shortcut folder entry not the Program files entry) although the shortcut will point to it.


    Step Y. - Having found the "BitDefender 2009" shortcut folder you will then point on it and click on the "BitDefender Internet Security 2009" to re-start it !


    Step Z. - Now look at the TSR area and see if your BD icon appears


    Now post the result of each action please - I need to know at what time the BD Icon loaded and or if it did load after Step 4. or after the re-boot

    Hello pcbugfixer,


    After using register cleaner had the following result :


    Missing Shared DLL files 16 and only Bitdefenders were in the list and no others


    Installation Fault 3 lines

    Havenot deletetd/fixed them yet


    Also cleaned everything was about 200 Mb cache/coockies.temp etc etc did do that and Unclicked User Accounts which isnot recommended by Vista because thats part of the ëxtra"security but did that.


    Then the next 20 !!! Reboots everything loaded as it should be only 1 time think the 20 th time the Sound Tray Icon didnot started uo but the next reboot it did , the BD loaded everytime !,hope it stays so


    Didnot want to jinx it so waited before posting, but the Above lines must they be fixed and what then, again a new/fresh install of BD TS 2008 ?

    That looks like the CCleaner (otherwise known originally as the CrapCleaner) version 2.15.815 (latest) you are using, if it is, then by all means get it to clean the redundant entries and clean your registry. It will give you an option to save a backup and if you think something has gone wrong you can restore the registry from the saved file.


    NB: always re-boot twice or log off and on to allow the system to load correctly after a registry clean, I know this may sound silly, but sometimes after performing a correction on the Registry (does this in most of the MS (Microsoft Operating Systems.) the system will not load correctly and to ensure that it did, I use the "do it twice" as the proof of a successful completed action.


    One of the predominant issues that I have with MS OS's, particularly XP and Vista, is the fact that the TSR(s) seldom display their Icons correctly. If you log on and off after the initial boot up, you will not only notice that more icons appear, but also that they load in a different sequence (position on the Start Bar) whereas the Quick Launch icons on the left always stay in the position you have elected to put them in and stay the same, due to the fact that they are shortcuts to programs and not loaded or active until you click on them.


    In the old days of DOS 5 and 6, we had a "Memmaker" utility that when the memory above 580KB to 1024KB (1 MB) was introduced on Motherboards and MS OS's, it optimized the loading of TSR's in a manner of loading the largest TSR memory user 1st, then 2nd and so on, and used the high memory area for any other TSR's before it used the low memory area, therefor sparing (utilizing) the largest amount of memory for use by the system. Without it, the system would use any memory area and leave holes thereby gobbling up memory areas that was not used and empty, leaving little for the system environment to operate with.


    In later MS OS's like windows 95.98, ME, NT 4 and 2000, the TSR's loaded correctly (99.99% of times) and started not doing so with MS XP and Vista, which I believe is an error in the OS and it's codes the way it handles the loading of the "Run" entries in the Registry.


    Hence the use of Registry cleaners and registry optimizers that help in attempting to speed up the processes and in most cases fix the loading of the TSR's. UniBlue has a good Registry Booster that after I used it in a test, seemed to fix this issue after it cleaned and optimized the registry.


    OK, trust all will work well on your PC from now.


    BTW: The action I described in the last post to "bigben" can also be performed on a Vista OS, with some minor task differences, which I'm sure you know how to do.

    Again ty very much for your time and effort ,the best replies I,ve had on this forum or from the support from BD was from you.


    I,ve read your other replies on different topics on this forum and read on the User account option advise you gave another user !


    What I have done is done the ccleaner yes the newest version (how did you know ;) ) ,made a back up before and a back up with the ccleaner tool too,


    Then deactivated Windows Firewall and windows defender ,again booted up,


    then deactivate the User Account, then Uninstall Bd through the uninstall tool through the Normal Bitdefender uninstaller,then I used the Uninstaller tool from Bitdefender also twice ! ,rebooted a couple of times ofcourse,


    Then deactivate the windows firewall again.


    then install BD 2008 TS again the latest version from the internet and installed the updates ,


    youre correct the taskbar Icon trays dont start up everytime in the same order ,but thats ok I am glad they all start !


    Again youre help is appriciated if I can return the favor I would gladly do so but do think youre ahead of me computer wise but who knows,

    i tried the directions in the previous post, the problem persists.


    i did a system restore and retraced the steps i took setting up my system; (drivers; updates; programs; etc.) i found that the tray icon disappears when i disable a system service, but im not sure which service since i disabled a few at once, (eg security center, indexing service, etc.) thus, my question is: which windows services are linked with bd2009 tray icon?

    So here i thought you would follow my Moto, "If it works, Don't fix it. If you must fiddle, get a violin. Don't fiddle with your Computer." yet you fiddled with the parts that did work and removed services that had nothing to do with the issue, like cutting off the bottom part of a flat tyre because it was flat and no round like the top.


    Ok so read this article (one of many available) "System Tray Icon Missing from System Tray in Windows XP" in it is the answer and also more solution you can try.


    I think you have over fiddled and now have a partially corrupt installation.


    With rocks in your sock, it must be difficult to walk.

    hello bugfixer, thank you for all your help.


    problem solved! apparently, disabling the "Terminal Services" service causes the bd2009 tray icon to disappear upon reboot. to fix this problem, simply set "Terminal Services" service to "manual" and restart.
