Update Error

Options

Pretty self explanitory... I have re-installed, repaired, etc. and nothing so far seems to have worked bringing up this error shown below when I try to update it.

*On an offnote I have also had a virus bypass BitDefender through an external drive transfer. Its name is OuterInfo which keeps bringing up advertisements and maybe worse... I'm searching everywhere but no luck so I'm taking to the net to see how to deal with it.

If I can get some answers on the first question that would be great and very much appreciated <img class=" />

  • Hi!

Do you have another firewall installed? If yes, deactivate it.

Until a solution is found, you should download weekly updates from here.

    Hello

Open BitDefender go to update, settings. And check if under primary update location settings this address is entered: http://upgrade.bitdefender.com/ The same server must be also entered under alternate update location settings. What firewall are you using?

Made sure of it and the url is the same and I'm just using the Windows XP default firewall with ports opened and quarantined for BitDefender. But, it's off right now and the problem still persists... :\

*I'm going to reboot... this virus is doing a number on me

@Niels: No, the two servers can be different. That's why it is called Secondary: because it's used if the first server failes.

@Pat C: you can also try some alternative update servers:

    http://upgrade1.bitdefender.com/

    http://upgrade2.bitdefender.com/

    http://upgrade3.bitdefender.com/

    http://upgrade4.bitdefender.com/

Just add one of these in the Primary server field, press Apply and try again to update. It it doesn't work, try another server. If none of these works, please post here.

Edit: where exactly is the virus you are talking about? And who warns you about the virus?

    Hello

Take a good look that the prefix is http:// and not http:// or htttp:// , ...

Because otherwise BitDefender will not be able to reach the update servers. Go also to start,my computer, double click on the icon of your hard disc, windows, system 32,drivers,etc,double click on hosts choose open with for wordpad mfc-application. Normally there aren't any entries expect :

127.0.0.1 localhost If you find any other entries delete them or disable them by typing # for the entry do not forget to save it by press on file, save.

For your Outerinfo issue open control panel, software, add/remove and remove everything where you see OIN. After that download these programs:

rogueremover: http://www.majorgeeks.com/RogueRemover_d5360.html Install it after that perform an update by pressing on Check for updates and follow the instructions.

superantispyware: http://downloads2.superantispyware.com/dow...AntiSpyware.exe Install it perform an update. Reboot your pc into safe mode by just rebooting. But press several times on the F8 button before the windows loading screen choose safe mode. Start rogueremover and press on scan. After that start superantispyware and perform a complete scan. Outerinfo is malware.

I'm sure that the address that he has is correct and can be reached, because BD can get the list of files that need updating. As you can see in he's screenshot, the error appears when BD tries to download a certain file, not when contacting the update server.

@Cris: You are right. But I never had any problems.

That's good, but you can't really know that for sure.

Take this example: your BD tries to update. It gets an error (whatever that error is). He tries to contact the Alternative server (in your case, the same server) but, until he reaches that server the problem is solved and the update is successful. You'll never know about the problem ;)

When an update server has problems, it's not permanent. It's just temporary (maybe less then a second). ;)

Ok I just changed the servers and it says it's searching for updates finally but we'll see if it's effective when a new update comes out. So problem solved so far... let's just see how the next updates works out.

Thanks alot for the help guys, you took care of my problem very promptly :) You guys make up one of the best forum help centers out there.

    Hello

I also recommend that you follow my instructions for Outerinfo. To prevent you in the future download these immunization software called Spyware Blaster it prevents the installation of drive by downloads and blocks known malicious websites and active x files :

@Cris I read in the error message err_link_syntaxis That's why I advised to check if the link was correct. The reason was the mention of url. But I could be wrong. You are absolutely right with your example. But since I first used BitDefender that was 2 years ago I never had to change the alternative server. But I must admit that I didn't always check but if it fails than I had to find an entry in the events and I didn't saw any entry of that.
