System Tray Icon Is Missing After Last Major Update.

Hi. I have a copy of the BitDefender 2009 software installed on three computers. After a major update a few days ago, one of the computers stopped displaying the BitDefender system tray icon. It still appears to work but the icon is missing. All the BitDefender services are working and all the files are loading at startup. I tried performing a repair install as well as a complete removal and install but it did not help. The problem keeps on reoccurring right after the last major update where the computer is prompting to reboot. The other two computers don't have this problem. All the computers are running Windows XP. If you can suggest any fixes for this I would appreciate it. Thanks in advance for any advise.

Sorry I can't help you, but I'm having the exact same problem. Most often the red icon does not appear on reboots, though the process appears to be running. Does this matter? I have tried an uninstall/reinstall but it didn't fix the problem, and I have no other security software running. Anyone??

  • ... and I have the same issue, as well.

I really cannot add anything to the solution; however I have noticed that if I do nothing, after a half an hour or so, the BD icon quietly appears.

To the BD team >>> seeing multiple users with the same report indicates this is not an isolated issue.

    Please respond to:

    • acknowledge awareness,

    or

    • with questions for us to help correlate the behavior with something in our setups

    or

    • out of professional courtesy - even if you have no solution.

    Thanks.

  • same here.

icon disappeared entirely, and no re-appearance occurs.

additionally a popup windows comes up on me alerting about seccenter errors.

all services are being loaded, and BD seems to work, no icon though.

  • Same problem too

Dear Bitdefender-Team, please give a solution to this problem as soon as possible :)

I'm using Vista 64bit, all services loaded, tray icon missing.

Check in Windows Services if Terminal Services service is Enabled and Automatic

yes, it is, and always been

    still no icon

  • Hi. I just wanted to update everyone on what I did so far. I completely removed the BitDefender 2009 software from the laptop. I then checked the registry for any BitDefender entries and deleted them all. I rebooted and installed the BitDefender software again from the latest download. The installation went successfully without any errors. I performed an update after the installation and the icon was still there at that point. The laptop did not ask me to reboot after the update. I rebooted the laptop and the icon did not appear and hasn't appeared since although all the services and files are still running. The only thing that is different between the three computers that I have is that the two computers that don't have this problem are desktops and the computer that does have this problem is a laptop. I hope the above information helps the BitDefender support team solve this problem.

  • hmm... my PC is desktop and does have this problem

  • Hi. I performed some further research and found new interesting results. The same laptop that has this problem has two login accounts. When I login to my account the BitDefender system tray icon does not appear but when I login to my wife's account on the same laptop it does appear. Both are administrative accounts so rights is not an issue. Now if I could only figure out what I need to copy from my wife's account to my account to make the icon appear again. I don't want to have to delete and create my hardware profile. If anyone from the BitDefender team can suggest what I need to copy I would appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

  • I noticed one other thing today. Sometimes the Windows XP security center thinks that the Anti-Virus protection is off even though all the services are running and the anti-virus software appears to be running. This started happening after I disabled the anti-virus software temporarily to perform a virus scan from the Kaspersky website to make sure that the BitDefender scan did not miss anything. I rebooted the computer after I was done and the security center stopped seeing that the BitDefender Anti-Virus software is on. It is definitely running as far as I can tell though.

must be one of possible fixes

    doesn't work for me though

  • The first troubleshooting step is indeed enabling Terminal Services from the services list. If this fix does not work please boot the PC, and check if "bdagent.exe" is running in the process list. If it is not please go to Start - Run - msconfig - and check if bdagent shows up for Startup.

  • Hi. In my case the terminal services are enabled in Windows. The "bdagent.exe" is also running. The problem occurrs in only one profile on my laptop. The other profile has no problems. Is there any file that I can copy over from one profile to the other to make this work?

  • Hi,

I use BD TS 2009 on Windows XP Pro SP3 installed on a desktop computer. BD was wrkin fine. But today, after a restart, the BD icon did not appear in the systray.

It had been happening for a while that the BD icon was takin sometime to load after startup, but today it disappeared completely. In better times, the BD taskbar icon appeared just after the Welcome screen, as soon as the volume icon was loaded.

Apart from that BD is working fine. Whenever I go into a folder with a lot of Exe files, vsserv.exe starts scannin them as always. The BD main window is accessible from Start Menu. And I can run scans normally. however there is no icon in systray.

There used to be 4 processes viz, bdagent.exe, livesrv.exe, seccenter.exe and vsserv.exe before. Since this problem started, There is no sign of seccenter.exe in processes after startup. However if i open BD TS 2009 from Start Menu or I open seccenter.exe from the BD installation folder in Program Files, seccenter.exe appears in processes and stays there even when I close the BD TS 2009 window.

I went to services.msc and checked teminals service. It was started but was set as manual. I changed it to Automatic as stated above and then restarted my computer. However there was no effect. there's still no sign of BD systray icon.

I have also noticed that since BD icon has disappeared, whenever I shutdown or restart my computer, an end program window opens for something called "bdagent switch" or "switch bdagent". This usually happens with programs that are not responding at the time of shutdown or restart. I have noticed this with many programs. whenever a program is acting weird and is not responding and u try to shutdown, u get a end program for that particular program. So i suspect that getting this end program for This bdagent Switch thing during shutdown suggests that this program is no responding.

What baffles me is why all of a sudden this started happening to me. I had not done any installs or anything.

Please help in light of above information....

Add me to the list as I'm also having the same problem with the sys tray icon not showing up at start up. Because I don't know if it's working properly I always restart and that usually works (sometimes multiple restarts are needed before it loads properly) and the icon returns but the problem occurs at least a couple of times a week and is a major waste of my time.

In addition, several times now BD has apparently stopped working for no known reason. It loads fine and updates ok so I think everything is ok but then later I'll just happen to notice that the icon has gone all black and if you mouse over it it will say something like "Bit Defender's services are unavailable. You need to restart to make them available again." It does NOT pop up something on the screen telling me I need to restart. Oh no, that might be helpful. It just goes all black and I have to actually see that it's black so I know that I need to restart. And in the meantime, if I'm busy or heaven forbid away from my computer for a few minutes, who knows if it's providing any protection at all or just leaving me hanging there without any. This has happened at least 3 times in the past month or so and has completely destroyed any confidence I had at all in BD since I don't feel comfortable leaving my computer unattended for more than a few minutes since I don't know if BD will continue to do its job or not. I feel like I have to babysit the program supposed to be protecting me, making sure it actually starts like it's supposed to and keeps working like it's supposed to. "Sometimes" is not protection and certainly not what I paid for.

I'm using Window XP with all updates and service packs and I update BD IS 2009 multiple times a day.

As someone else said, it would be nice to know that someone from BD is actually reading our messages and is aware of the problems and working on resolving them.

After reading many complaints on the web, my conclusion is that the missing BD2009 icon in the Notification Area (System Tray) of Win XP is a BUG. I would appreciate some action from BD to make a correction and issue a fix. Thanks.

I second that. I think there are no people from BD in this forum. In the past I had a problem with an Acronis product and I tried their official forum for help. I got answers from their official representative. But this isnt the case here. There is no response from a BD staffer. I think posting here is of no use. The only reason we post here is because of the fact that it seems an official support forum. But we'd have to find some other medium to get our voices to reach BD.

And to BD I'd say this...Congrats on the great products you provide, but if u wont hear the voice of the consumer, they'll have no option but to move on.

  • Same problem here with the missing tray icon. Was pulling my hair out trying to figure out what happened until I came here and saw this thread. At least I know I'm not alone! <img class=" />

  • Same problem.... it happens especially when some major update requires PC reboot. My solution is to reboot again. I have been using this product for 4 yrs, but everytime tech guys say to upgrade to the newer version, but this time, it does not seem to come out yet.

  • Did a little more digging today and still can't get the tray icon to show up. I noticed that bdagent is no longer listed in Taskmgr, but it is set as a startup item along with ieshow in the run registry key. I also tried the Terminal Services suggestion posted earlier and set it to automatic but that didn't do anything either.

Seriously wondering what is going on at BD - looks like there are lots of other threads where someone from tech support posted to initially (like this one) and never came back. I keep trying to give BD the benefit of the doubt, but this is getting pretty old now.

As a last ditch effort I was going to try uninstalling and installing the latest version but can't find the download link to the bdav.msi (the last time I downloaded it was back in November). I only see the stub installer on the main web page, does anyone have the download link to the complete 32bit installation file?

  • Found the offline installation files in case anyone is interested. The links are in this post. Will try to reinstall later and see if the tray icon reappears after updating.

  • It's working now!

I'm using TS 2009, and after the last update and maybe 3 restarts, BD icon in the system tray is showing and is functional.

Update your BD to the last version. After this, a msg will appear asking you to restart your PC.

The problem will not get solved in this first restart. Restart your PC again and it will work!

Someone from BD was aware of this problem, and solved it within this new update!

    Regards.

Just to let you know. I emailed BD Tech Support today about this and they returned an automated reply that they would provide a non-automated reply to the question within 48 hours. We shall see what we shall see.

    Peace.

  • Had this problem for a couple of months, rebooting seems the only way to get the icon to load, tried reinstalling problem still there. Even when it does load at start up it can take ages to show. Only have the problem with XP, have another PC with Vista thats ok. Software works ok without the icon so I will live with it untill they get round to fixing what is a bug

  • Just updating my previous post, I uninstalled and re-installed the latest version and the tray icon is back. Obviously not something I want to have to do all the time, but for now all is good. Guess next time I get the message after an update saying I need to reboot I will keep my fingers crossed and hope for the best!

  • Just to keep this thread alive until BD responds perhaps, I am using Vista home premium and I also have lost the icon. This is not just a XP issue

re-boot_s have done nothing to bring it back

i reverted back to v12.0.11.5 and got a systray icon visible.

waited for new update, tried it and... no icon again.

BD techs seem to do nothing to fix this issue.

i wonder whether they're unaware of the problem or simply ignore all of us here.

or maybe they just have no idea what to do.

yeah, bring me more "product updates" to corrupt this cr@p software completely.

  • In order to start the troubleshooting process for this issue we will need to have a look at some reports from computers where it reproduces. I have send an e-mail to everybody who posted on this thread requesting some reports generated on their system, please reply to it with the reports.

The functionality of the product is not affected by the missing system tray icon, all the BitDefender services will still be running in the background.

  • hi Diana, can you please send me the report as well so i may post it here?

Vista is showing the icon, however XP is not. Also, occasionally the systray icon will go grey and say that vsserv.exe has stopped responding, but after a few moments, it goes back to normal. Not too sure why this is happening.

  • @systemX

Sure, I will create the ticket in the support database and you will have the e-mail in a couple of minutes.

  • This is affecting my Dad's PC which is running XP SP3 (x86) but not my own which is running Vista Home Premium (x86).

  • We have managed to reproduce this issue on our side as well. The fix will be available via live update after we have finished testing it, but we do not have an ETA yet on when it will be delivered.

  • Same thing is happening to me.

The system tray icon is missing. The problem was same with previous release of BD AV 09 and with the release that was recently published.

  • O.K.

    I've got it.

Now i have the tray icon.

The trick with "Terminal Services" worked.

funny what that some parts relate to terminal service...

    LOL.

Yea, the trick worked for tray icon, but not for the product.

I'm sorry Bitdefender, but you will have to do more in order to regain my confidence and make an functional product if you wish someone to use it.

After a while of using BD 2009, it suddenly stopped to work and then again started to work.

This kind of behaviour is unacceptable. That's why many people are getting away from BD and i must stress many experienced users.

Bitdefender, make your product similar with version 10.

Version 11 is not working as is should, and same goes for version 12.

You will have to pay more attention on users complains and especially to add more often new releases with fixed problems (i.e e.g sometimes 3-4 times in 1 or 2 months.

I can't really imagine how can you release full product with updates so slow.

And what's the trick with the all the problems ???

You can read in yours previous forum about all the problems. Not to mention all the problems in this new forum.

You are releasing "final" product which suffers from millions of problems.

This is not a beta release or RC(release candidate).

IF you are doing something do it right.

Wake up dudes, obviously you are sleeping.

People maked new AV's (Vipre) and are gaining customers, and you are going to opposite direction.

  • Hi. I have performed all the latest updates and the system tray icon is still missing. When do you plan on releasing the update that fixes this problem?

    LOL.

I suggest you to wait a while.

They will soon release new product(While we are waiting fixes on all the bugs). Ah, what an irony.

So is not worth do torture yourself. If you can live with this product at the moment, fine. If not, you can change it for the time being.

Read here more about new BD Beta.

  • Diana or someone from Bitdefender - can we get an update on this issue?

  • Hey folks!

I don't know if this is true or dependable solution, but this worked for me, though. [Note: I use Windows Vista Ultimate]

I initially operated under the user profile '_______'. It repeatedly asked me for administrator rights to do even simple tweaking! So I was bored and added to my frustration was not showing up of Bitdefender Notification icon one day.

I has no idea what i did would solve this problem, bu it did. I activated the original 'administrator' account using Computer Management and deleted my older account.

And OMG, the bitdefender icon was back, and i was not asked for administrator confirmation one again! Whoa - i was very happy.

Hope this works for all of you! <img class=" />

  • I have the same problem with no icon in the tool tray.

Upgraded from BD AV 2008 to BD AV 2009 several days ago... Version 12.0.12.1 Windows XPSP2

Icon was present after installation. Disappeared after reboot.

Terminal Services is enabled, set to automatic and running. "bdagent.exe" is also running. Computer has been rebooted and icon still does not appear.

I have to assume from the previous posts that this problem has not been resolved yet and the version I have installed contains this bug.

It has been 5 weeks since there has been any communications from BitDefender abut this issue. It would be nice if Diana Bele or someone else would provide an update.

  • I have a bad feeling they won't give us any fix to resolve this issue and many others.

They seem to be busy working on BD 2010 now.

v2009 will stay abandoned as it is - buggy as ######, unreliable, frustrating... and so on.

Question is how many customers will pay for the next release (2010),

having experienced this beta version of 2009.

  • Try this guys...(vista) type regedit in the start search bar, and go to registry editor. Than navigate to "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion \TrayNotify". Now delete the values "IconStreams" and "PastIconsStream". Now close registry editor and open task manger, by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Delete. Close explorer.exe. Then go to applications, click new task and type explorer.exe. Your icons should reappear in your system tray. Sometimes they don't all appear but if you restart they all will appear, but most of the time this isn't necessary. :D

    Hi,

I`ve just had exactly the same issue with bitdefender 2011 (Tray icon vanished after update) looks like yet another issue BD cant fix or don't care about!!

Anyway the same solution fixed the issue, except I'm using Win XP & the location is HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\TrayNotify

  • Andrew, although its seems outdated but the solution that you gave, still works like a charm.
