I read on BitDefender has joined the dark side that Asktoolbar is included in BitDefender and I would like to ask confirmation or rejection of the claim.

BitDefender Antiphishing includes an ask.com searchbox. As it's stated in the link you provided, this toolbar doesn't collect/send any information from your system.
However, BitDefender Antivirus, Internet Security and Total Security, which also include the antiphishing module, don't have the Ask searchbox.
