Can't Exclude Encrypted System Folder C:\rrbackups

Every time a scan runs, BD complains that it can't scan hundreds of files in C:\RRbackups (I think they are encrypted by Lenovo). These messages distract from real problems and the directory needs to be added to the exclusion list, however BD won't allow me to add it. Is there a fix for this or some other way to tell BD to stop looking at files that it cannot scan?

I am running Win XP sp3, administering BD as admin user.

What do you mean "BD won't allow me to add it"? Do you get any errors? Please provide more details.

I received a reply from BitDefender support:

"The RRUbackups folder is actually a hidden folder which is part of the IBM

Rescue & Recovery Utility (RRU) and is created by the BIOS. The contents of

this folder are encrypted and/or hidden from the operating system in order to

be protected. They cannot be accessed or modified by anything other than the

IBM Rescue & Recovery Utility (RRU). The contents are not infected.

Please ignore the RRUbackups references in the scan report."

That is good news and deals with much, but not all of my problem. Question now is how to tell BitDefender scan to exclude that folder from the scan so that I don't get a "false positive" every time. The normal way of excluding folders does not work on my SP2 system.

Not just the directory can be excluded, but one of my employees accidently checked the RENAME FILES during the scan and BitDefender has renamed ALL the \RRBackups files.

Be carefull not to make this mistake!

I have been waiting for 14 days for a FIX to restore the files to their original name.

I did get a TIP from Florin (BitDefender tech) to run a utility that they have posted on this site.

This was the response...

However, the utility did not change anything, and I am still waiting....TIK...TAK...TIK...TAK

If anyone has run into this problem, and has been able to restore the files to their original name, I will appreciate your help.

I don't think the technical support staff at BD understands how critical these files are to the Lenovo computers since you do not have any disks to recover in case of a system crash.

If my computer happens to crash, and I would need to do a restore, I will not be able to do it.

I think that 14 days is LONG ENOUGH for any technician/engineer to be able to respond with a FIX to such problem.

I do not want to sound critical of BD, but it seems that they do not care at times about certain problems.

They only seem to respond to the EASIEST fixes, which usually I have fixed it by the time I get a response from them.

However, related to the \RRBackups, I do need BD to respond with a fix, not only for me, but also for ANYONE who happens to run into the same problem.

My last CHAT with BD was 14 hours ago and I was promised a FIX within hours. However, I still have not received a response.

I hope management at the TECH SUPPORT department will take this issue seriously and provide us, all owners of Lenovo systems with a FIX to rename the \RRBackups files to their original state and allow access to the folder, as it is inaccessible if BD Antivirus is ENABLED.

Again, I am not trying to be critical of BD, but it is unacceptable that tech support has not reesponded with a FIX after all this time and all the emails and CHATS that I have had with them regarding this matter.

For all the persons that have issues with the \RRBackups folder and files here is some info that you may find handy.

I have done a serious amount of research regarding the Rescue and Recovery utility from ThinkVantage that is installed on all Lenovo laptops.

There are issues with Rescue and Recovery that at times it takes up to 45GB of space from your drive when you enable backups, yet most people cannot recover the disk space.

If you are using this program to do your backups then ignore my suggestion, otherwise this is my recommendation.

FIRST:

You should always do backups of your laptop, my recommendation is to use an EXTERNAL unit (disk) connected to the USB port. Use the backup software that comes with the drive or download/purchase a GOOD BACKUP software system.

SECOND:

Uninstall Rescue and Recovery from your laptop through the Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs ->Rescue and Recovery -> Remove.

This will solve all your problems with the BD software. No more messages and the scans will complete without you needing to monitor the end to get to step 3.

---I can go into long explanations into the reasons why you should DELETE the program from your system, but I do not think it is necessary.

The \RRBackups folder and the Rescue and Recovery software are NOT needed to restore your operating system in the event of a system or hard disk failure. It is used strictly for BACKUPS.

Rescue and Recovery software will not keep you from doing a system restore. You restore the system from your laptop by clicking on the RECOVER button instead of the ON switch, which sends the BIOS to the system restore mode.

After all the OS is installed, then you do a RESTORE from your backup that you have stored in the USB drive. Your system will be back to the state of the last backup you made.

You cannot recover files from the USB drive until the HD is reformated and, the OS and all the drivers are installed in your system. After that, you should have access to your USB drive.

There have been cases that when Rescue and Recovery is Removed, when you REBOOT your computer it goes into an infinite loop. If that happens, just REBOOT AGAIN and the system will start.
