Bitdefender Slows Down My Boot Up Time By A Couple Of Minutes.

I have a Windows XP gaming machine with SP3. When I boot up the machine all of my startup items (Not many of them either) boot up fast but the bitdefender task bar icon takes a couple of minutes all by it self. This is a fast machine and it should not be taking this long to boot. I have 2009 installed on the wifes laptop and it only takes a few seconds for the icon to appear in the task bar so I know it's stalling on my machine. I have no other virus programs installed on this PC and it's a new PC so there isn't any junk on it. This is the virus program only not the security suite. It has taken as long as 4 mins to come up but after I did the reinstall it sped up by a couple of mins. I've already done a reinstall and registry clean recently because the BD scan stopped working. I also had to install the patch as well for scan failures and that seems to have been fixed.

How do I determine why it's hanging up?

Hi Davenc,

your system and your wife's system are completely different.

Did you have any other anti-virus suite installed on your system before? The left overs of it, might be still in the boot-up, slowing the system down.

Can you please run hijackthis (http://filehippo.com/download_hijackthis/) and post the log here?

Wish I could remember the name of a very small program that would help you.

It is run, then you reboot, and a log is created that shows all boot steps and the time involved. I used this on a new mobo a few years ago to find out why it booted so slowly. Perhaps someone will know the name of the software that tracks booting.

Guys,

New computer and new hard drive and new installation so there has never been any other virus programs, firewalls, scanners etc.. loaded on this machine.

I'm at work now so when I get home I'll post the highjackthis log and will also run the bootvis.

Davenc, a new computer doesn't always mean that it doesn't already have a security solution installed on it. It might very well come with a pre-installed solution. Nobody around here had any way of knowing if you had anything pre-installed or not, so we just covered all possibilities.

I should have stated that I built the machine myself which would have simplified everything. I know I didn't load any anti virus stuff on it.

could you stop PnkBstrA and PnkBstrB, which are the services associated with a game on your system. If you don't know how to do this please let me know.

Your system should boot faster considerably after you have stopped these processes.

I disabled them so that on start up they did not show up in my task manager. It really didn't help at all.

I downloaded the bootvis and found out which processes are starting up slowly. Everything else starts up at the 30 second mark.

I guess what concerns me is I don't see the small red icon start up until at the end of the boot period when the above 5 processes start up. Is this normal? If it is then I really don't have a problem. All I know is that on the laptop it comes up quite fast in comparison and I don't understand why it wouldn't on the FAST gaming machine on which I have less stuff running in the back ground.
