Error Message in Vista with BD AV 10

Every other day I will get an error message saying " bitdefender services could not start". Yet bitdefender is still located at the bottom right hand corner and says everything is active.

If I reboot the computer everything seems fine.

Any word on why this happends?

I don't use Windows Vista, so my answer is just a supposition: the alert you're getting might be a little quicker then BitDefender's services.

In other words, the alert might appear before BD's services start, but after a few seconds (or faster) BitDefender starts and that's why it says all modules are active.

I'm using Windows XP and, sometimes, when I start BitDefender, Windows' Security Center alerts me that BitDefender is not running. Just after that alert appears, BitDefender's icon also appears and reports that all modules are running. This mostly happens to me after BitDefender updates that require a system restart, but on Windows Vista it might behave different.

To be sure the services are running, wait a couple of minutes and then look at the Services in Windows Vista, to see if all BitDefender services are running.

I don't know where you can find the Services in Vista (as I said, I never used it), but in Windows XP thet're here:

Start -> Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Services

If this doesn't exist anymore in Vista, open Windows Help and search there something like: "Administrative Tools" or Using Services

Thanks for the reply. Next time it happends im going to check the services just to make sure. I can't remember If I tried this already or not... I'll try again anyways.

I think it is very annoying: every time BD performs an update, Vista will tell me that BD stopped working, this happens a few times a day.

The general impression I get right now is that I am still working with a BETA version of BD, even thoough I have a paid license for three years.

Next to this problem, I also have a problem that Microsoft Update won't function with BD Realtime Protection enabled.

Come on people at BD, I know Vista is a big challenge for you, but it has been out in retailversion since november last year....when will I have full functionallity of BD again???

I know but BitDefender stops all services when an update is available and restarts them at the end. We have posted it already in the feature requested subforum. So that BD will not stop his services when there is an update available.

You can try this for your windows update problem but remember I don't use windows vista. Open BitDefender go to firewall add a new rule and browse to x:\windows\system32\wuauclt.exe and allow both traffic and ports.

To exclude it in the realtime protection open BitDefender go to antivirus,shield,adjusted level then press on the option don't scan this pad on all level press on add item and browse to x:\windows\system32\wuauclt.exe (change x by the letter of you hard disc or partition where windows is installed on to confirm press on ok.

if that also fails then you have to wait till someone of BitDefender will post an reply.

As Niels said, BitDefender stops and restarts it's services after every update.

Maybe Windows Vista has a different Security Center (or whatever it is called in Vista) which alerts instantly when a service stops and does not wait to see if it starts again.

IMO, this is a Windows Bug.

I personally wouldn't consider it a windows bug when the security center informs me that the service has stopped if it stops indeed. Are you 100% sure that it did restart? You would have to check the services to be sure, wouldn't you?

But the funny thing is that I never encountered this problem with BD9 or 10 on XP SP2, only now using BD10 on Vista.

IMHO the folks at BD DID change the program to be compatible with Vista and this one of the results.

And yes, I would love to see an official BD-reaction here, since for now the helpdesk is not able to shed a light on this all. And don't even start talking about 64bit support at the Helpdesk, they get lost alltogether when you start about that. The only reason why I am still on the 32bit platform is Bitdefender, my only application which doesn't support 64bit computing.

All my other programs are 64bit compatible, all my drivers are available at 64bit, and Bitdefender doesn't even have a beta which is capable of running on a 64bit OS.

My opinion of the capabillities of BD for virusprotection is high, very high, my opinion of BD as a supplier of software for the latest platforms is diminishing by the day.

Once again, Windows Vista has been released november last year, 64bit computing has been around a lot longer than that, but BD doens't have anything prepared for it.

First I would like to ask that this does not turn into a bash against the Bitdefender Company. I can only imagine what its like to design a great program such as this to allow it to get weaved into windows which is a Microsoft product. We all have more complaints about MS then anything else.

I give props to bitdefender company for actually making it work with microsoft crap! As with everything, there will always be issues or annoyences that will have to get worked out.

How many issues do you think bitdefender hears about and has to take action on compaired to the one or 2 that we experience? how many programmers does bitdefender have?

Thank you for this information. Now that you have said that. This IS when the error message occurs.

So with that said, I don't think this is a "bug" in windows or BD. I think its more of the security being to tight in windows or atleast not being able to allow an extra second for a service to restart.

Are you 100% sure that it did restart? You would have to check the services to be sure, wouldn't you?

After checking the services the second the message appears, the services are started and BD runs the way it should. I don't feel this is something to worry about.

If you notice, it takes a split second for windows to come up with the message instead of in XP, it seems to take a few seconds or more for a message to appear. I think Vista's security is just VERY VERY tight and BD may be able to find a way of allowing windows to give it a few seconds to restart the services.

I am just learning Vista but im going to see if there is an option where you can set it so windows does not monitor a certain service or program like you can do in XP

You can also take a look at the BitDefender icon which change his color when some parts are disabled. Then you are sure that they are running again. Under windows xp you don't get an error message from the security center. Only sometimes.

By other antivirusvendors they don't stop all their services they just update some files after an update. Yes it's true that you can only start or stop ... service by service and not together.

You can get easier to services by typing services.msc in the run dialog box : start,run,at the run dialog box type services.msc and press enter.
