Bd Firewall Vs. Linksys Firewall - Which To Use?

Hi. I have a PC running Windows XP SP2. I am having issues with download speeds when using Newsleecher and Giganews. While my internet service is 6 MB/sec, whenever I download I get a very slow 256K/sec. It has been suggested that either my firewall software or antivirus software may be responsible for this.

I use BitDefender Antivirus Plus 10, and I also use a Linksys WRT150N wireless router. I currently have the BD Firewall in use, and the Linksys Router. Could this be causing a problem for me? I am not sure if I should be using the built-in Linksys firewall, or the BD firewall.

It was also suggested that my antivirus software may be responsible, as it may be scanning the large files I am downlaoding as they are coming in, rather than after they are complete on my PC. Is there a way to disable this just for downloads through my Newsreader?

I don't know if it works the same as p2p but the speed in p2p depends how many people are sharing it and also which upload speed you have selected. That could be also the possibility with the programs you are using. I am not familiar with it. Do you have also slow downloadspeeds when not using these programs?

You also have to open the ports that these programs use also in your router's firewall. This site can help you to do that:

http://www.portforward.com/english/routers...routerindex.htm Normally by default your router's firewall is enabled. The best thing is that you enable both.

You can exclude folders to do that open BitDefender,antivirus,custom levels,exclude path from scan (applied to all levels), press on add (new) item and browse now to the folder you want to exclude. Confirm afterwards by pressing on ok.

Giganews and the like are binary news groups. I use it everyday without any problem and download at 1350KB. (max DSL sync speed)

Are you connected wirelessly? If so please try and use a network cable, plug it in the Linksys and try again (not using you wireless connection)

I dont think any firewall is responsible for this as it does not require ports to be opened for this as P2P does. But what I suspect it that the wireless network cannot handle the high transfer speed maybe due to interference or other issues. But that is beyond the scope of this forum.
