Vsserv.exe Taking Up 100% Of Cpu

Hi ,

this is my machine config. - p4(2.8ghz) , 2gb ram , 290 gb hdd , Intel D845GVSR motherboard...... OK i know it is pretty outdated..anyway

i installed bitdefender internet security 2010 few time back......now i m facing a problem...........every now and then my machine comes to a stand still...............with its cpu running at 100%.I checked the task manager to find that a process called vsserv.exe was the cause. This happens even when i do simple operations like surfing using firefox , or when i m reading a pdf .

This has become a major headache recently........

PLEASE HELP ME OUT.

Please try the following:

Reboot in Safe Mode and rename the file httproxy.dll from BitDefender's install folder (usually is c:\program files\bitdefender\bitdefender 2010). Then check if the issue still occurs.

Deleting httproxy.dll will completely disable http traffic filtering by BitDefender. I need you to do this in order to isolate the problem. Actually it is better just to rename the file so you can restore it later if that wasn't the problem.

thanks for your reply . But don't u think .. turning http filtering off would make my cpu more vulnerable ........ specially since it is connected to the net for more than 12 hrs a day. And another thing..........i change the name of the file httproxy.dll to what ? And can the change be undone ?

I have decided to uninstall 2010 and return to BitDefender 2008. It is very stable and I have been happy with it's performance.

I'll try 2010 again in a few months after you have worked out all the issues (on my Dell Inspiron 8600 with the

latest XP updates, BitDefender 2010 has 3 issues (Live Messenger version #, vsserv.exe taking up excessive CPU, BitDefender 2010 stops and does a bug report several times a day).

You can rename the file to anything you want. If you need to revert the changes, just rename the file back in Safe Mode.

This is a debug operation, it is not a permanent solution. We need to isolate the problem so we can deliver a proper fix.

I also am having this problem intermittently. Windows 7 x64 BitDefender 2010. CPU went to 90% for vsserv.exe for a few minutes, then dropped back to say 20% for a while, then eventually went back to 0 - 1 %.

I too am having a similar problem intermittently - not usually 100% but often by far the biggest demand of any process on the system. THIS IS NOT SATISFACTORY.

I too am having this problem. Per the dates on the notes in this forum, the last response from BD was on 11/3. It is now 11/26. When is there going to be a fix for this???

I tried the suggestion of renaming httproxy.dll, but that disables the automatic update. This leaves the machine vulnerable.

When is a fix going to be available for this.

For me, vsserve.exe takes up 75-90% of the CPU and has enormous amounts of disk i/o. It can read/write GB's (yes, gigabytes) of data in a few hours. Machine is essentially useless.

Firstly i let my build 13.0.15, of bd is 2010 upgrade to the current build last night(o/s win vista hp sp2 x64bit) update work or seem to work without the probs that there was before, but a short time after vista has finished loading up, and cpu is idle, vsserv.exe starts hogging the cpu from 60%to100% for several minutes then stops? also game mode would appear not working properly as no G in the tray icon, i used the support tool to submit a dump to bd, got a standard e-mail reply saying to try disabling the avc module to see if it still was hogging, well as i will no longer enable this defective module that i can say in not the reason vvserv.exe is hogging our cpu's it will randomly hog without any reason, making online game play impossible causing the game to freeze completely for several seconds, loosing other player who where connected to my game also, well i guess i will be rolling back to good old build 13.0.15 again,nothing apart from the updates has been fixed, also the activity bar will not appear without user intervention

Haha, having BD is like having VD. I am jumping ship.

If the recommendation is to disable stuff for the product to work, then I should be uninstalling the whole thing entirely. I want a refund.

In order to further investigate this sittuation, please follow the steps bellow :

Create a vsserv.log. Basically, we need to see what happens when the vsserv hangs at 100% . Here is what you have to do :

a. Go to Start->Run ;

b. Type cmd and hit Enter.

c. Type

cd %programfiles%/bitdefender/bitdefender 2010

and hit Enter

d. Type

supporttool.exe /vsservtrace on

and hit Enter

e. A popup should appear asking you to reboot the PC. Reboot the PC.

Next time you will have the high CPU usage because of vsserv.exe process, please go to the next location :

C:\ProgramData\BitDefender\DTrace\ (if you have Windows Vista or Windows 7) or

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\BitDefender\DTrace (Windows XP)look after the file "vsserv.log" then reply to our email with it attached or upload it on http://www.sendspace.com/, then send me a PM with the download link .

Next time you will encounter the same issue please follow the steps bellow :

1. Open My Computer.

2. Browse to

C:\Program Files\BitDefender\BitDefender 2010

- considering that BitDefender was installed on the default C partition

3. Doubleclick on the supporttool.exe file .(in case you have Windows Vista or Windows 7, right click on the the supporttool.exe file and choose "Run as administrator" )

4. Click on Next, wait a few minutes for the progress bar to complete and then click on Finish .

5. Go to the desktop, upload the report on http://www.sendspace.com/ then send me a PM with the download link or reply to our email with the report attached .

BitDefender Team: I have tried the fix around renaming httproxy.dll twice now and the probem persists. For a couple of days I get a faster computer, but eventually it slows to a crawl as VSSERV.exe gradually bloats up to occupy more and more resources.

And now I find I cannot rename httproxy.dll because it is locked. I cannot stop BD except by uninstalling it.

I am running XP SP.2

Your help is urgently required.

OK... seems I'm NOT the only one with serious slow-downs on my CPU after installing BD2010. Can technical support please e-mail with corrective measures ASAP?

I would hope/expect that an udpate would have already been made and uplaoded.... automatically, considering how many posts I've now discovered with the same problem/smyptoms. I am not a programmer, not a code writer adn bearly computer literate - PLEASE do not write me with elaborate requests to open my ocmputer in safe ode, start log files and things liek this... if I were that competent, I probably would not have goe out and spent the money I did for internet security!

Common and known issue. I think bitdefender are flogging a dead horse. My thread titled refund voices my opinions so wont hijack this one.

Needless to say I had the same issue until uninstalling the offending software and going for something else (PM me if you want to know what)

I'm plagued by this problem, too, but I've just found that I can stop it by turning off antiphishing protection. If I watch the memory usage of vsserv.exe in Windows Task Manager while unchecking and re-checking antiphishing protection in the antivirus section of the BitDefender Control Panel, the value drops and rises sharply. However, I haven't had time to verify that the problem doesn't return.

PS: I see that the same correlation between the vsserv.exe problem and antiphishing was reported in more detail back in October in the one-message thread "Vsserv.exe Resource Hog Work Around". The writer is plainly exasperated with the lack of action on this issue from BitDefender, and it seems that (s)he still hasn't received a reply to that post. BD, how about taking a look at your antiphishing code?

I'm also suffering from vsserv.exe resource hogging problem. Disk thrashing slows laptop to a crawl. I've been reading forums and it seems it was a problem in BD2009 and continues in BD2010. Are you any closer to a resolution? How much longer do we have to wait for a fix?

My computer won't go into Standby automatically any more. It appears that vsserv.exe is the culprit. I don't want my PC running and accessing my hard drive non-stop forever. Hard drives will not last long this way.

In order to solve this issue please be so kind as to make sure you uninstalled any other security solution you might have on the same computer (any spyware removal, Ad Aware, spybot or another antivirus).

Having more then one security products installed on the same PC can degrade performance and cause system instability. Even if they are turned off, there are some active processes running in the background. We recommend you to uninstall all the other security solutions in order for BitDefender to work properly. We also recommend you to run a registry cleaner on your computer in order to improve the system performance.

My vsserv.exe is using way too much memory. I've just updated to 2010 from the 2009 last week. Since then this vsserv.exe has been hogging all of the memory causing my PC to stall at times. Please help!

I'm also suffering from vsserv.exe ressource problem. The high CPU load makes it almost impossible to work for some minutes. None of the approaches to fix the problem worked. I think there is no other solution than uninstalling the software and wait for an official fix. What is really annoying is the fact that I already paid for the licence and cannot use it. I hope this will be fixed soon.

They know what the prob is, i cant believe they have the nerv to tell us to download 2010. If they would read the bords they would see that 2010 is the program were complaining about. By now they should have a blacklist of programs that conflict with vsserv. If they dont have that now then the prob is on there end. I just bought my copy of total security yesterday, My machine more then met the system requirements. Im giving them to the end of the day to give me a quick fix, and no im not going to submit any logs. You guys know what the prob is, either recall the program, or fix it.

I am still not understanding how any other program is going to affect how BD2010 runs. I have had Malwarebyte on my computer for awhile now ALONG with BitDefender previous versions and they have co-existed just fine. Why would they not run together now? I hestitate to remove Malwarebyte from my computer as it has saved my butt on more than one occasion, and if BitDefender is this unreliable, I am not convinced that removing Malwarebyte is a good idea at this point.

I have had the last two versions of BitDefender (2008 and 2009) and not had issues like this. I have recommended it to family and friends because it worked so well with everything else... until now.

My computer is experiencing both a huge issue at bootup that stalls my computer out completely AND once I can get it going, vsserv.exe will intermittently hog my CPU anywhere from 58% to 100%. If this has been an issue for the last few months, why hasn't it been resolved and how many of these reports do you need uploaded to sendspace.com before you can resolve this issue? This is starting to remind me of Norton Works that did the same thing and forced me to remove it completely and go with another product.

I'm having same problem, vsserv.exe takes 50% of my CPU while 3Ds Max and other software I use for work take the rest and my PC halts.

But if you think for a second that I will spend the rest of my day removing other programs and logging into safe mode etc. you are wrong. I know excatly every single process that is running on background, none of them are other AV programs.

I didn't have to do anything with 2009, nor any other. I just want realiable firewall at this moment, just make a update to fix this or you just might lose few customers.

When my 2010 expires and this hasn't been fixed, I might go back to 2009 as it is the best firewall and AV I've ever tried, but I will look up also for another products to match up with 2009.

Same problem downloaded 2010 to upgrade from 2009 and both computers have become so slow they are frustrating /useless . ... And I see the problems were known back in October . Is this something that they have no intention of fixing with an update . ?????

Okay, I just went and did the renaming the httpproxy.dll in safe mode, and yeah it REALLY imporves the speed on firefox. I just couldn't take anymore of the 10sec loading time for each tab I open (10 sec, it is a LOT)

Now it performs like it used to be and I will take back my lost 10mins for disabling the httpproxy every click.

I'm looking forward for the httpproxy.dll update so my PC isn't possibly vulnerable for that part.

I will see if the vsserv.exe still occasionally flood after I disabled the httpproxy.

What does it do by the way? It does scan something everytime I open a tab because it takes so long with it.

e. Upload the report on http://www.sendspace.com/ then send us the download link .

In the end please remember that you need to send me a PM with the download link for the vsserv.log and another link for the Process Monitor log.

I too have been experiencing vsserv.exe hogging up to 100% CPU, but have just performed the following operations:

1. Created a vsserv.exe log, as per Aurelian's instructions;

2. Uninstalled Malwarebytes, that I had forgotton I had installed;

3. Turned off Rapport, Alliance and Leicester's own privacy protection software.

So far so good: vsserv.exe is using between 0%-4% CPU, which is the first time that this has occured since installing BD IS 2010 trial a month ago (I have just bought the full version).

Fingers crossed I haven't spoken too soon, but the problem appears to be resolved. I put this down to the removal of Malwarebytes, as I can't believe that creating a log has made any difference!

I will check back in in a day or two and post an update, whether it's still working or not. If it's not, I will upload log files as requested.

In posts #30-31 of this thread, I noted a correlation between the vsserv.exe problem and BD's antiphishing feature. Later, BD advised us to remove other anti-malware programs as they might conflict with BD. I knew that it was a mistake to use more than one anti-virus program but had always read that it was usual or even advisable to use multiple defenses against spyware.

Nevertheless, I did remove one popular anti-spyware program about a week ago, fully re-enabled BD antiphishing protection, and have not seen my system slowed down by vsserv.exe since. There are of course times when various background processes (including auto-updates of BD itself) make the system a bit sluggish, but nothing like the problem we've been discussing here.

Please understand that I'd rather not give the name of the anti-spyware program I uninstalled, and also that I still have another one installed. This is not intended to be the last word on the subject, but I recommend following the advice to try cutting down on anti-malware solutions. It does make sense with resident programs, as distinct from user-initiated scans; and the most common approach to malware now is to maintain a resident screen against its activities rather than rely on efforts to find it and root it out. Since BD has a good reputation for both screening and finding (not so much for rooting out, alas), I don't mind dropping another program that may be conflicting with it.

Finally, one thing I won't be caught doing is believing "someone" who savages a product on a forum after I've read many favorable reviews of it. There's nothing to keep competition among software companies from taking the form of "user" complaints designed to make us think that only a fool would use what we're currently using. When people find time to write about products they don't use, I assume it's either their hobby or their occupation.
