    Mirotvor: I would recommend you to upgrade to BitDefender Internet Security 2010. If you decide to upgrade follow the steps below:


    1. Please use our uninstall tool in order to uninstall/delete any previous BitDefender related files. You can find it HERE


    2. When the process is complete restart the PC. Note that after clicking on the 'Uninstall' button you will have to wait until the PC will ask you to restart it. Do not restart it until the process is complete and you see the notification on the screen.


    3. Next please download (SAVE) then install THIS file.


    If you have a 64bits computer please save THIS


    4. After installation restart the computer. When the computer is back up use your license key to register the software.

    Hello Support Team,


    I moved to Bit Defender 2010 from Symantec 10.1.5 a month back. My OS in Windows 7. Initially it was working fine. over the past 2 days, i have noticed a significant rise in the cpu usage of vsserv.exe and livesrv.exe. They are kind of slowing my system. Today it was alarmingly high and it brought my system to a stand still. both vsserv.exe and livesrv.exe are taking turns and are using more than 40% of CPU. I m unable to open a single application now. Kindly help me with this, and let me know if i have to provide any log info from my PC

    My PC, be it a little older, still works. I recently reformatted it because it was freezing, locking up. After reloading all my software including Bitdefender 2010, it still freezes up. And VSSERV.EXE seems to be the culprit, using up to 99% of the CPU. I've glanced over this forum. Please send me an email on what to do. I have a hard time understanding that it looks like this problem has been around since 2009, yet most of what I've read here seems to still be in the "debugging stage"? This hasn't been solved yet? Anyway, please email what you would like me to do to FIX this. Thank you.

  • Your right Goshunk. This problem has been around for a while and as you can see from the length of this topic, it has yet to solved. For me at least, this seems to happen most often during updates. I'd recommend changing the autoupdate to every 4 hours to minimize the 100% usage problem. It will still happen but not as often. I know its a pretty lame solution but it at least makes my computer usable. Otherwise you can just turn off autoupdate and run it at night before you go to bed or something. Unfortunately, updates are what keeps an AV program effective against the newest threats. So this solution reduces BD's overall effectiveness. Anyone else have a better idea?

    Good Question that has not been answered in MONTHS!!!!


    I am running Bitdefender Total Security 2010 on 6 machines. The slowest machine, Toshiba Satellite, P4 2.66GHz, 992MB RAM, is now stuck @ 100% utilization.


    Will I really have to uninstall Bitdefender Total Security 2010 and demand a refund to fix this problem?!?!

    I'm new in this things, but I also, bought the Bit defender 2010 and my PC from time to time goes REALLY slow.


    I managed to open the Task Manager and see the task that was taking more CPU was the vsserv.exe and another called liveserv.exe


    I will follow the indications described in this forum and let you know about it.

    @Rta: the issue persist after you uninstall BitDefender. Do you have any other security solutions installed on the same computer ? Does the issue always reproduce after a BitDefender update ? You have the same issue on all 6 computers or only one? Please try to provide me with more details about the issue.


    Last but not least follow the steps below and send me the generated log files:


    1. Click on Start and then choose My Computer/Computer.


    2. Browse to


    C:\Program Files\BitDefender\BitDefender 2010


    - considering that BitDefender was installed on the default C partition


    3. Double left click on the supporttool.exe file - if you are using Vista or Windows 7, right click on the supporttool application file and select Run as Administrator;


    4. Click on Next, wait a few minutes for the progress bar to complete and then click on Finish;


    5. Go to the desktop and upload HERE the file that was created by the SupportTool then send me a PM with the download link.


    Note:


    - a slower/older computer has more chances in having the CPU usage issue along with Services are not responding. Please check the System requirements listed below:

  • I have been having problems with BD since Version 2009.


    The first problem was to do with vsserv.exe. It was hogging an average of 86% to 97% of my CPU causing the computer to become unresponsive and some programs completely lock up until vsserv.exe stops. Also vsserv.exe cannot be stopped or paused through the task manager. It has a life of it’s own.


    After many days of waiting on BD support, they emailed me and told me to download version 2010. So I uninstalled 2009 and installed 2010. But the problem came back again shortly after.


    Then a new BD problem started.


    BD would shut itself down and tell me to restart the computer, and if that doesn’t work to contact BD support.


    I find BD support is so slow to respond and the fixes they gave me didn’t work, so I formatted a new drive, reloaded XP etc. and of course BD 2010. This should have eliminated any corruptions or errors preexisting on the old drive. This was a chance for BD to run on a totally clean drive.


    Everything was fine for 2 weeks. Then the vsserv.exe high CPU usage problem started again ~ (hogging my CPU 86% to 97% and stalling my programs).


    And now it also fails to start on some boot_s and gives me error messages about “unable to start BD, restart or contact BD support”. Arrgggg !!


    And this morning I waked away from my computer and BD had shut itself down. (no firewall, no virus protection). In a panic I pulled my Ethernet cable. About 15 minutes later BD restarted.


    This is some seriously buggy software. Both of my problems seem to each have many individual user complaints posted. So I am convinced BD has some very real universal problems.


    I am running a 1.6 Ghz AMD Anthlon board with about 1.75Ghz memory. Everything runs great except for BD. I hope BD gets this fixed or they are going to lose a lot of future business. If they don’t come up with a simple patch to fix this, I am obviously going to look for another vender when my subscription comes up for renewal. And maybe before then, if these problems get worse.

    Dear BitDefender;


    Apparently you are having issues with this. I am having same issues as many others. CPU usage.


    Why do users have to figure out whats wrong with your program. Do you not do testing of your own, on your own machines, with different O/S's and different cpu's with different users in your multi-million dollar labs with your under paid engineers.


    I have the solution if you can't pass one out.. Its the best one so far.


    Its called Uninstall. Regardless of sending you logs and logs and logs, turn this off, try this, try that. BLAH BLAH BLAH!


    ITS BULL!! It should work right out of the box.


    Is it supposed to be a higher grade product or not?


    Can you provide a patch fix or not?


    If not! Uninstall is my option!


    I paid for this, and am truly disappointed. I had better luck with free Anti-Virus software.


    Now I look forward to your excuse oops i mean reply..

  • I have been a BD subscriber for many years and have always found this product to be very good protection, I have never had a virus nor infection on my home pc and to me this program is generally user friendly with many options. Needless to say I have told my friends and family about my success with this product, unfortunately I now have a bit of egg on my face.


    I am now seriously considering removing the bitdefender program, throwing away the money and chalking it up as "lesson learned"! I am in utter disbelief that the issue of vsserv.exe has not been resolved. This issue has been ongoing for nearly a year, BD support staff is constantly instructing members to start a support ticket, provide logs, info, screen shots ..etc... most time without any resolution. Customers can not use their computers due to this error. they ALL have paid money for your service and you all cant come up with a fix?


    PLEASE explain to me support, if updates are daily, why can't the fix be updated automatically? There are limited OS, with limited versions...updates are there and used for EXACTLY this reason. My experiences have taught me. when it comes to home pc and protection most people will have no problem with google-ing "pc protection" and buying from your competition.


    My 2 cents...get off ur butts and get a fix for your customers.

    I put the 2011 Total Security on my son's computer and the issue of vsserv.exe was making his pc totally unusable. I removed the 2011 product and the pc ran just fine. My frustration was vented in these forums.


    I had 2010 Total Security on my PC and this product runs without one issue and preforms flawlessly. So I decided to upgrade to the 2011 product as you have suggested, just to see if BD was ready for me to put on my sons pc and tell my friends on the fix...


    Hmmm installed the upgrade as instructed ( bd removal tool, correct version) and what do you know..? the vsserv.exe only spikes to 120,000K. Twice the demand as any other process, I will remove the product.

    I too had this problem, which occured both with BD TS 2009 and now, with BD IS 2010. After a lot of headaches and a lot of reading about other people's suggestions, I disabled the automatic update and now the problem is gone... The computer works like it should and no more 99% cpu usage from vsserv.exe


    However, i'll install BDIS 2011 to see if the problem appears again with the automatic update enabled, and if that's the case I'll try disabling AU and see if that solves the problem again. Until then, I manually update the program every 1 or 2 hours if I don't forget to...


    I should mention that I also disabled the Automatic Updates function of the windows (wuauclt.exe) because the CPU high usage seemed to coincide with the starting of wuauclt.exe service (not simply turning off the AU from control panel, but disabling it from Start>Run>services.msc). I don't know if either of the two measures I took worked or the two combined, or if it would work for you, but you should try it!

  • Just installed BDIS 2011 , Automatic Update enabled ... the high cpu usage occurred again, so the 2011 generation didn't solve the problem. However, as soon as I disabled the AU, the CPU usage returned to normal. I'll leave it like that because I don't think Automatic Update is really that necessary in order to be "fully protected".


    As a final note, disabling the Automatic Update function is the only way to fix this problem.

    Johny Bmb: First of all please post in the 2011 forums, not in here. Second, the issue you encounter with the VSSERV CPU usage and the automatic update of BitDefender is because of a new feature that the 2011 has: to share and upload files with other BitDefender users. Allow me to explain this so you will understand it the right way:


    - if you have the latest virus definitions and product updates and another user is trying to update BitDefender he will be able to update BitDefender from our server but also from other users having the latest updates downloaded and installed.


    Please follow the steps below and let me know if the issue still persist. I do believe that the issue is caused by one of BitDefender options under the Update module:


    1. Open BitDefender Security Center


    2. Switch to Expert View from the Options button


    3. Click on the Update module


    4. Go to Settings


    5. Uncheck the following boxes:


    - Enable update sharing (P2P)


    - Upload BitDefender files from this PC


    6. Click on Apply


    7. Test to see if the issue still occur.

  • Running BD IS 2010 im 100 dyas in and im not satisfied at all while scanning at some points it lags my comp so badly that its impossible to use.


    But forget scan time randomly vsserv kicks in with over 90% cpu usage effectively crippling my comp im running XP Pro SP2 2.66ghz P4 1.5gb ram and a Hdd with over 15gb of free space on it since my comp was reformatted not even a week ago....


    Ive experienced this problem before and after the reformat


    I actually have no programs installed so software conflict is unlikely... I have office 07, outlook express, hp digital imaging monitor which most of the time is off, and my Brother printer's monitor on.


    Sometime in the coming week i plan on buying a new comp and junking this but i dont know if i want bit defender on my new comp with such pathetic performance.


    Resource wise it takes only about 100,000k which for an av is acceptable to me but 94-95% cpu usage everytime it goes berserk.


    I fin its linked to the updates so ive changed update regularity from 1hr to 5hrs so theres a bit of a break between these fits but i will not accept turning off updates as a viable solution as recommended in some of your other forums.

    OK, I'm going to chip in here with my own experience...


    We have been using BitDefender for over two years. We began with BD AV 2009, which I think we installed in late 2008. We just recently purchased new licenses. We manage systems for a couple of small businesses. We now have BD products running on nine different machines. Two machines have 2009 products; the rest have 2010 products. Some have the basic Antivirus app; others have Internet Security. We work with all three operating systems – XP, Vista, and 7. The brand names run the gamut, too: Acer, HP, and Dell. Laptops and desktops.


    None of our machines has experienced the systemic overload that is the topic of discussion in this thread.


    I'm not saying the issue doesn't exist. Obviously, enough people are experiencing it that it needs some attention.


    Here are my observations:


    I always install the program using the expert/custom configuration.


    I never enable automatic scanning on a schedule. We perform a manual scan on each machine on our schedule. And we do it late at night, when we know the machine won't be in use for other things.


    I never enable the function called <Send Virus Reports>. This is a function that provides useful information to BitDefender, but it does absolutely nothing for the end user's PC, except use CPU resources. This function provides no live protection whatsoever, and it is not necessary. That's why you have the option to turn it off.


    For virus database updates, I use manual update, with the setting called <Prompt before downloading updates>. The time frame varies from one end user to another, but we never set it to check for updates every one or two hours. We typically use six, eight, or twelve hour intervals.


    <Prompt before downloading updates> means that the application notifies you that an updated database is available, and asks if you wan to download it. If I'm working on important, resource-heavy tasks, I routinely say NO, and do the update later. If I don't do it later, the application will remind me in another six hours, anyway, and if I keep putting it off, I'll get the exclamation point alert in the system tray as an additional reminder.


    And when it comes to Windows automatic updates...


    Well, you probably don't even want to go there with me.


    All of our machines have Windows Automatic Updates turned off completely. And we also suppress the notification, so we don't see a red shield in the system tray.


    We manually update each machine about once a month. We use the custom update function, and I routinely turn down one or two of the "critical" updates. My favorite example is the update to the Windows Mail Junk E-mail Filter, or any type of update for Outlook or Outlook Express. We don't use any of those applications, so we don't need those updates. But Microsoft still considers them critical. I never select the optional updates.


    I don't want Microsoft making any changes to our machines "automatically," and I certainly don't want updates getting installed on shutdown or startup, or when we are engaged in mission-critical tasks.


    I spend a meaningful amount of time monitoring the health of nine different machines, and it is part of my job. But for the record, these machines are not networked. I am not working in a corporate environment. It is a small business environment, but the PCs are, for the most part, consumer equipment. This why BitDefender puts “Home Office” in the "Consumer" product category.


    For just one machine, the careful monitoring and micromanagement that I do isn't that time consuming or intense.


    I'm offering a personal opinion here, and you can take it with a grain of salt. But a virus update once every twelve hours, and a Microsoft Windows Update once every 30 days, is enough.


    Somehow, it just doesn't surprise me that some machines are getting temporarily crippled, if they are configured to perform four or more tasks simultaneously on startup: Uploading virus reports to BitDefender, downloading virus updates from BitDefender, running an automatic virus scan, and checking for, or actually downloading and installing, Windows Updates.


    And that's really only the tip of the iceberg. There are dozens of other common applications that are default-configured to perform automatic updates: Firefox, Java, Adobe Reader, and Adobe Flash, to name a few. Auto-update can be disabled on all of these.


    QUICKBOOKS, a very popular bookkeeping program used by many small businesses, is notorious for running services in the background, and performing updates, even if you don't launch the application. There are ways to shut off these obnoxious functions, but you have to look for them.


    I'm not saying that the guys at BitDefender shouldn't be investigating this issue. What I'm saying is that there may be some variables involved that they can't control. And in some cases, the end user may not even know that these variables exist.


    Any computer is going to crash, lock up, or slow down if it is trying to do too many things at once.

  • OK, I'm going to chip in here with my own experience...


    Interesting to know since you are running a wide platform of computers though my problem is confined to BD.


    All my programs have automatic updates turned off. (except bd)


    Windows auto update also off


    Comp fresh out of a reformat so not too many programs running. (Also problem existed pre-format)


    But the point is not that my comp hangs its the fact that this process in question makes it hang by virtue of the fact that it alone uses 94%+ of my processors capacity.


    With just 6% of the processor left and 48 other process all trying to function within that gap grinds my comp to near halt speeds.


    As stated before the problem is with BD itself and i do believe it has something to do with the auto updates...


    I dropped the regularity of updates to 5 hrs since the comp being online and offline intermittently mens that not more than 2 updates actually pass per day. And obviously turning updates off makes no sense on an AV and i cant do it manually as i dont use the comp regularly enough and the other users arent exactly tech savvy.

    It a virus, kinda like Nimda. it create 3 *eml file in every shared folder on network, i had to manually delete it..almost 30K eml files...hehe, but that solve now, no problem.


    i guess bitdefender have to sent report for 30K eml files...thats's why it use almost 100% cpu usage.

  • I'm guessing that I have BD 2009 (as I bought the 3 yr. plan back in Feb. '09 & have 374 days remaining) because it was so highly rated by many sources, & I have been running into the same performance issues as previous posters have mentioned. I can also see how frustrating it would be when gaming (which I don't do) as I would think any slow-up/freezing renders them inactive! I did get in touch w/BD (I think about 6 mos. after the install) about this problem & was instructed to "run SYSDUMP & INFO FILE, send the results of Sysdump & BD Info file along w/a screenshot to BitDefender Tech. Support". Okay, been there, done that. The fix worked for a little while (a handful of weeks at best) but the same CPU hog-up issues returned. I've just dealt w/it all this time, I'd start the laptop first thing in the morning, click on 'Update Now' & put 30 min. in my schedule so that it could do its thing. The previously mentioned 'reviews' boasted about BD having 'real-time' virus protection but that real-time thing seems to be the hang-up.


    A couple of things:


    1.) With this problem being around for so long,...how is it that a 'final' fix hasn't been developed? And with all of these updates day in & day out, why is it that a fix for this hasn't been included in an update? Or would a program removal be required & install the new version w/the ultimate fix? I'd be willing to accept that! If that can't be done, then...


    2.) It would be really great if the 'real-time' thing could be dropped completely & just manually update when I want to (like first thing every AM). I made a change in the settings so that no 'real-time' update would install until it prompted me to either 'install' or 'cancel', but vvserv.exe still runs (I'm guessing) to download updates throughout the day, rendering the laptop useless during those times. I need the 'real-time' DOWNLOAD aspect to stop! If that could be done, I'd be very happy as I've never had any virus/spyware/worm/etc. issues w/BD & I would stay w/BD for future years to come!

    Hi blkprlz,


    First I want to apologize for my delay in responding to your post. In case you are still having issue, in order to solve it, I would recommend you to upgrade for FREE to BitDefender 2011. Before going through the upgrade process, I need to know if this new version is compatible with your system.


    If you want, you can send me a PM with a Screen Shot with your system configuration or just tell me your general hardware specs (CPU, RAM, System Type...).


    In order to see your system configuration, right click on the MyComputer icon present on your desktop and choose Properties.


    How to take a Screenshot:


    1. When the window is on the screen please press the "PrintScreen" key ("PrintScreen" is located at the top of the keyboard, at right. At this step we can not see anything, as the picture is copied into Windows's clipboard);


    2. Open a graphic editing application (We recommend using the standard Paint program, that comes with every Windows installation (Start > Program > Accessories > Paint));


    3. Paste the picture in a new Paint document;


    4. Save the file in JPEG format.


    Note: Looking into our database I cannot find any e-mail from your side, can you send me the ticked ID you received when you contacted us, please ?

    I too never had a problem with versions of BitDefender before BD Internet Security 2013. I recently went through three weeks or so of conversation by phone, then by emails, with BD tech support.


    They had me run their "Support Tool" which kept hanging and never finished. Giving up on that, they had me run SysInternals information collector, and advised me that other AV products were installed on my machine - they were not. They had me run disk cleanup processes, registry cleaners, disk defragmenters ... . After all this, vsserv.exe is still at the top of the CPU activity list and my PC runs as slow as ever.


    Every new email was from a different member of the BD team, who didn't seem to know what I had said, by phone or by email, in a previous correspondance.


    If this isn't fixed soon, goodbye BD!
