32 Bit Or 64 Bit Version?

I have just purchased a new notebook computer that comes pre installed with Windows Vista Home Premium edition. I have also just purchased BitDefender Total Security 2008; at the point of download I am given the options of downloading either the 32bit or 64bit versions. As I am fairly new to most of these technologies, I am unsure as to which version I should download.

How would I find this out? Is there somewhere in Vista that will tell me if I am running the 32bit or 64bit version?

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I would like to get BitDefender installed as soon as possible.

Hi thanks for the reply. The system in question is the Inspiron 1501 highlighted under the orange banner. I have trawled through all the information I can find on display, but still cannot find any information that would tell if it is a 32 or 64. I think it is a 64bit processor, but apparently that does not mean it has a 64bit version of Vista.

Go to Control Panel->System(Classic View) and at System Type you should see what version you have.

Info in System section, and it states that it is a 32 bit operating system.

Hope this info may help other buyers new to Vista / BitDefender.

Sorry I am small business/home user with the same question - 32-bit or 64 bit? I've tried the "Control Panel->System(Classic View) and at System Type ...." suggestion from vladx but I don't see a "system type option" on my screen.

I have 2 PCs. My 3 year old desktop is a Packard Bell with an Intel Celeron 2.6gHz processor running Windows XP Home Edition (with Service Pack 2). My 1 year old laptop is a Phillps Freevents. Its processor is an Intel Core 2 T5600 @ 1.83 Ghz and it's running Windows XP Media Edition (with Service Pack 2).

Hello Hilary

Press the win(dows) button together with R type dxdiag press enter. Check the operating system line. If you have 64 bit version it should be mentioned. With x64 or 64 bit.

Sorry, that was only for Windows Vista.For Win XP, go to Run, enter msinfo32 and now you'll see the "System Type" option.If it will say x86 then you have the 32 bit version, if not then it is 64 bit of course.

Thanks vladx. Both my PCs say "X86" so I'll go get the 32-bit version.
