High Bandwidth Usage After Visiting Flash Video Sites

Hello, I'm a user of the Internet Security Suite 2011 and i've also noticed this problem especially with the video to youtube.

My system is Windows XP SP3 fully updated and Firefox web browser.

I have already applied this registry change mentioned above, noting that the problem has disappeared, along with a greater speed of navigation.

Not applying the http flow control when browsing, security is compromised?

Thanks in advance for all reply

  • Hi,

When you mentioned "registry changes" you mean you have added the HttpAppSkip key ? If that is the case then no, the security is not compromised. That key will allow the added applications not to be scanned. That scan is made on the port 80 and it only refers to the HTTP scanning.

Allow me to give you an example so you will understand exactly what I am referring to:

    - lets say you are using Firefox to open a download website. Having Firefox added into HttpAppSkip, BitDefender will not scan that browse traffic however, if you decide to download a file from the website then the Real Time Protection will scan it BEFORE the file will be accessed / used so your computer will be protected.

  • Very thanks for your reply. I've done some tests with malicious websites and all seems to be gone ok. A fix for this problem however will be appreciated. ;)

  • A permanent fix will be delivered via Automatic Updates soon. Then you can remove that registry key, however it is not a must. The steps I provided in the topic you mentioned are to workaround the issue until the fix will be deployed.

    Regards,

    hey Dan

i got a problem though, i enabled the HttpSkipApp key but now

the parental controls dont work ...it doesnt block all the inappropriate sites anymore :(

is there anything I can do about this

because If I dont enable the httpSkipApp key ..my internet runs slower than

    its usual pace.

    thanks in advance

  • Hi,

Indeed I must apologize as I should have added this info into my previous post. When you add the Firefox as exception using the registry key, then the Parental Control traffic, being considered as Internet browsing traffic on port 80 (default port), will not filter that traffic anymore therefore the sites will not be blocked. The resolution will be released at the start of the next year, in January.

I would like however to provide me with few more info about the issue:

    - what is the difference between before and after adding the registry key when it comes to the bandwidth usage?

    - I would like to see an additional set of logs from you. Please generate the SupportTool logs and send me a PM with the download link.

I have created a ticket on your behalf and sent you instructions on how to further investigate this matter. Check your email associated with your forum account.

    Kind regards,

  • hey all, i used to have this problem too until it was solved by the HttpAppSkip but in this case the traffic is not scannes so the internet security is useless in someway.

and when i posted this problem i was replied that i was the only one facing this problem and it was not a priority in the new build version.

apparently they was wrong so please bitdefender internet security is a great sotware

do not spoil it for a small problem.

By the way i knew that the problem because of confliction with internet download manager , i did my part and told you so fix it because

I am not the only one facing this problem
  • Hello,

The issue you encounter has been already acknowledged and a resolution will be released soon. I am aware that you are not the only one facing this issue.

Regarding your statement above and allow me to quote:

hey all, i used to have this problem too until it was solved by the HttpAppSkip but in this case the traffic is not scannes so the internet security is useless in someway.

    - the above are not correct. If you add that registry key, only the traffic made by that application won't be scanned however the Real Time Protection is active and protecting your PC when you use that application.

Can you provide me with the details requested in my previous post ? Thank you!

first i would like to say that the internet download manager is not the problem as i removed it and the problem still there.

and as for dany request after adding the Http value first the IDM goes as fast as it can with no limitation ( i mean the connections ) and the surfing is a lot faster and something i noticed the search advisor is not working after adding it and the bandwidth is not consumed when watching a flash video.

would you please tell me how to use the support tool and how to send this information ?

  • Hi,

I never said that the download manager was the culprit. The issue is on BitDefender's end. When you add that registry key, the traffic on the port 80 will not be scanned therefore the Parental control web control feature AND the site advisor will not work.

I have re-open the ticket you had with me (ID: 201010011010474). Please check your email associated with the forum account for instructions on how to submit the logs I need in order to continue troubleshooting.

The Internet Download Manager executable file should have been added under the HttpAppSkip registry key so the traffic that will pass through that DM will not be scanned anymore. That will NOT let your PC unprotected !

my pc was infected by a virus today because the httpappskip solution for this probelm after it messed some of my files the real time protection caught it but that would not happen in the first place if you solved the problem.

how long will it take to solve it you said that you solved the problem in 2010 version but it still there.

HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE TO SOLVE IT?

  • Bitdefender ever found a fix for this issue? I uninstalled bitdefender because of this same reason. At present i'm using zone alarm extreme security, i do not have this issue with them. I sense your frustration @ captien. I still think bit is a good antivirus, but if they can't resolve a issue such as this for so long, then something's wrong with that picture...

  • Hello,

I'm completely new to Bitdefender as I have just changed from Kaspesrsky to Bitdefender because I have read it was also efficient but less heavy than KIS and since this changement I have seen exactly the same problem with video buffering on youtube for example. At the begining I was afraid my pc was infected by a virus that communicate with I don't know who because there was data coming in my pc and I wasn't downloading anything (I didn't understand at the begining that it was the video I begin to look to that continue to load, even after closing FF).

I pass all the afternoon today to understand why a video seen on youtube continue to load even when Firefox was closed and believe some times it could comes from flash or I don't know which plugin of FF. After some hours of test and research (update of flash and things like that) at last I found the explanation on your forum and I have been really suprised that it is caused by bitdefender that i really did not suspect at all.

I know you are working on it (since a lot of months apparently...) but I'm not really confindent in going in the registry to fix that as you say and maybe produce a bigger problem, and it is not really an easy thing to do for a mean user. Everybody pass times on video sharing sites now so it is incredible that such an great antivirus has no solution to offers againts this problem. I have now understood that this is not a security problem, but it takes a lot of bandwith for nothing. So I hope you will apologize me to say that, but if you don't find a solution to that problem in the coming weeks I will go back to kaspersky.

At least could you prevent all your clients (a message in an update version or something like that) that there is a such a big bug in bitdefender for that people like me that are not geek or computer professionnal don't believe they are infected by a trojan. I think this is the minimum you can do as it probably concern a big part of them. This is really not a minor a problem to me also and it is quite surprising as I never had problem with my previous antivirus system.

    Thank you for reading.
