just purchased bitdefender_antivirus_2008_64b.exe and it is incompatible with my vista home premium. where to from here?

In your topic title, you said Vista 32 and in your post you said bitdefender_antivirus_2008_64b.exe. The incompatibility appears because you are trying to run a 64 bit software in a 32 bit environment.
To fix your problem, download and install bitdefender_antivirus_2008_32b.exe.
