BitDefender Virus Shield failed to start

I am suffering this problem: http://kb.bitdefender.com/KB339-en--BitDef...d-to-start.html

I have uninstalled spybot and re-started several times but it keeps showing up. Anybody know what's going on?

Thank you.

  • Hi kissme

You can also try this go to start, run,at the run dialog box type services.msc press enter. Now leftclick on the BitDefender Virus Shield service and choose for start or restart. Then you don't have to reboot your pc. Mostly that happens after an update. I also have spybot installed on another pc without any problems.

I have a question for SOFTWIN: When, if ever, are you going to fix this problem? I have been receiving this supposedly "very rare" (bull!) error message every time I start my computer since you released your mess of an update on April 10. I have spent hours trying to resolve the problem (it is due to coding errors, so small wonder I have had no success) and am thoroughly fed-up at this point. Bitdefender tech support, as ususual, has been completely unhelpful. As far as I am concerned, I have wasted US$40 on this piece-of-crap software. You people need to get your act together. This is no minor bug (excuse me, I meant "issue", as you like to call them), as far as I am concerned because it prevents Bitdefender from functioning.

P.S.: I have tried all the half-baked workarounds (renaming bdpredir.sys, bdpredir.dll, restarting the virus shield service, blah, blah, blah, suggested in this and other forums, none of which solve the problem), so spare me. When is a patch going to be available?

  • Hi Bluto

Check if by startup automatic is selected by the BitDefender Virus Shield service. I don't have this problem on windows xp home editon sp2.

Which operating system are you using? Did you already tried the repair function? First close the realtime protection of BitDefender then put in the installation disc or run the installer and choose for repair. I do not work for Softwin.

Niels: Thanks for trying to help, but I've been through all this (and then some) with Bitdefender tech support. I have tried all of the obvious (and not so obvious) stuff. All Bitdefender services are set to "automatic". My OS is Win XP with service pack 2. I've tried the repair function--no dice. I uninstalled and reinstalled Bitdefender three times and everything works fine--until I update, at which point the problem returns. I've disabled all memory resident software except Bitdefender and that hasn't helped either. At this point I've pretty well given up and written off the $40 that I spent on this turkey. From dealing with Bitdefender tech support, I don't think they have a clue as to the cause of the problem (they say it is an "interface" problem and "rare", which doesn't leave me optimistic that a fix is going to be forthcoming anytime soon). I should mention, as well, that when I press the "Cancel" button to clear the error message at start-up (at which time Bitdefender reports that antivirus and antispy have been disabled), Bitdefender then goes into "Maintenance" mode (and it can't be moved out of maintenance mode, nor will it save any changes to settings). I can get Bitdefender to work by stopping and then restarting the virus shield service, but I have to do that every time I start my computer and I don't consider that to be a solution. I should mention as well, that when I download an update, Bitdefender installs it and then runs normally--**however**--when I start my computer the next time, the problem is back. I don't think that this problem is as "rare" as SOFTWIN claims, as other people are complaining about it too (see http://www.bitdforum.com). As I just mentioned, everything was working fine until the April 10 update was released, so the problem here has to have something to do with that release.

  • Hi Bluto

Personally I don't receive that error message. How did you remove BitDefender? By going to software, add & remove? Then the possibility is high that not everything is removed from your pc. So I suggest that you uninstall it again by following this instructions:

    1) remove via software,add & remove

    2) Download microsoft uninstaller cleanup: http://download.microsoft.com/download/e/9...1bd/msicuu2.exe

Install it and look after any references that has BitDefender in the name or just numbers 10.247 that is also BitDefender related select them and press on remove.

    3)Download ccleaner: http://www.filehippo.com/download/53921335...97394/download/

Use the cleanup and problem function. Fix every problem that is found.

Reboot your pc and reinstall BitDefender.

Do you have other security programs installed? If so which and are they running in realtime?

  • Hi Bluto,

I have the same problem. I tried installing BD 10 on Windows 2000 and on XP and I get the same result. The vsserv.exe often fails to start, and launching it manually I get "Real-Time Protection is disabled" in the monitor window. The fact that such a basic problem remains unfixed for such a long time gives me no confidence in their desire to resolve this kind of issue, and I shall not renew the license. It's possible to criticise a tool when it doesn't work well, that's one thing; but when they can't even get it to start up reliably then that is very poor, and I have other things to do than to ****** a sick utility program.

  • I have the same problem with ver.10 running XP SP2...could not even find a solution on their support pages. Finally this forum supplied a temporary fix.Every time I shut down and turn back on "real time protection is disabled" appears. In the past 2 weeks I ahve had this problem as well as updates failing to install...they download alright but 1/2 hour later it still says installing...?????????

I will be complaining with my wallet when BitDefender expires in Feb/08 I will be looking to purchase another Anti Virus program...like AVG or Kaperski.

  • did you try a repair or reinstall?
