Bitdefender Won't Stop

Starting a couple of days ago, my schedule scan will start at the appointed time, but the moving icon does not show up in the task bar and then it won't stop, it just keeps running and running. I have to reboot to stop it because I cannot open the scan window. What can I do to correct this? Running Windows XP.
