Msword File Permission Error

Options

Hi all,

The following appears to be the same as /index.php?/topic/28793-resolvedms-word-saving-problems/" rel="">http://forum.bitdefender.com/index.php?showtopic=28793, which is marked as resolved in build 15.0.27.322.

I'm using LAN connected PCs running XP SP3 plus latest updates, and MSOffice 2003 SP3. I have BitDefender build 15.0.36.1530.

Whenever I save ANY Microsoft Word file to a folder over the network, after about three seconds I get an error in MSWord "Word cannot complete the save due to a file permission error.". It creates a file of 0 byte length. Saving to the local hard drive works OK.

This problem has occurred since changing from Kaspersky to BitDefender.

If I disable all the functions in BitDefender the problem still persists. The only fix I've found is to uninstall BitDefender and then Word saves properly.

Any help appreciated :)

Thank you

    Thanks Christian,

The 2nd link relates to SBS2008 and Windows 7 - I'm on XP and Office 2003 so that one didn't help:-)

First link sent me on several wild goose chases until I found support.microsoft.com/kb/290982. This describes the symptoms well, but the resolutions aren't applicable.

It's also clear from the first link that the issue is in MSWord, causing a wide range of applications (mostly security software) to 'trigger' the problem. It seems that Microsoft have no interest in fixing it for whatever reason, and the fix seems to rest with the various security software developers.

Apparently Norton and AVG have (maybe) proiduced a fix so their products don't trigger the MSWord problem.

Re your comment "We have tested this and Bitdefender 2012 is not causing the situations". This may be the case, however given MS aren't going to fix it, it seems that the resolution for BitDefender customers is better coming from BitDefender to prevent customers moving to competitor products who have developed a workaround.

    .......Please:-)

    Cheers

    Hello

Please add Microsoft Word to exclusions.

You have all the details in this topic:

    http://forum.bitdefender.com/index.php?showtopic=30243

    Thank you.

  • Thanks Christian.

    That worked!

It's actually a lot easier than that (for some strange reason)...

    1. Open the Bitdefender program > Settings > Antivirus > Exclusions

    2. Set "Activate exclusions for files" to ON.

That's it - nothing else:-) And I don't have any other exclusions set in there already - all the excluded processes, files etc screens are empty.

If you set "Activate exclusions for files" back to Off, the problem returns.

Of course, that now begs the question, what else is it excluding just by setting the "Activate exclusions for files" button to ON?

    Cheers

    Hi Steve

When you activate that option in our product, all the files that have that extension will not be scanned.

It is not recommended to add under "Activate exclusions for files" executable files like .exe, .bat, .com, .dll, .js, etc.

Let me know if you have other questions.

    Have a great day.

  • Hi Christian,

But I haven't added any extensions or file details at all - just pressed the "Activate exclusions for files" ON button.

I would have expected nil effect until I actually added detail of any exclusions. As I haven't added any exclusion details, it's slightly worrying that it seems to have now 'excluded' the (unspecified) Winword.exe file - so the question is what else is 'excluded'?

    Cheers

So you basically activated the Exclusion module and now the issue is solved? That is what your telling me?

    Hi Christian,

    Yes that's correct.

Maybe that should be a new thread...?

    Hi Steve.

I think in this time a product update was installed and that's why this is actually fixed.

It has nothing to do with Exclusions since no files were added there.

    Take care.

    Hi Christian,

Not sure about that - if I turn exclusions off the problem re-occurs. Turn exclusions on and it's fixed again.

    Hi Steve :)

    That's a little bit strange.

In order to be able to properly identify the causes for the reported situation and find a solution we will need to investigate a bit deeper.

Please follow the steps below and send us the result:

a ) Go to this page

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinte...s/bb963902.aspx and download the autoruns file.

    b ) Extract the contents of the downloaded file and run the 'autoruns.exe' file;

    c ) Wait for the list to be filled with all the processes and then make sure that you have the Everything tab selected in the upper part;

    d ) Click on the Disk icon right under File and chose any location folder on your computer;

e ) Save the file with a specific name (your name, computer name, a random name, which one you want) and then send me a PM with it.

If the file is too big to attach it, upload it on

    http://www.sendspace.com

    or

    http://www.mediafire.com

and send me a PM with the download link.

We will analyze the information you sent and then reply with a possible solution in the shortest time.

    Have a nice day.

    Hi Christian,

Build 15.0.37.1568. I run automatic updates, so presumably this has been the build since it was released to automatic updates.

Have just verified problem still exists.

PC uses a local Microsoft workgroup, not a domain. Was that your question?

    Thanks!

    Hi Christian,

The problem doesn't occur with Excel or PowerPoint. The various narratives about the issue indicate it is a behaviour triggered only by MSWord.

Please open Bitdefender using the desktop icon and click on Settings.

Make sure Autoscan mapped network drives is turned off.

    Hi Christian,

I did the above and after rebooting I set the "Activate exclusions for files" button to "OFF" and the problem re-appeared. Setting the "Activate exclusions for files" button back to ON and the problem went away.

So disabling Active virus control didn't fix it, Christian - sorry:-(

Please open Bitdefender and click on Settings. Go to Antivirus and select the Exclusions tab.

Take a screenshot from that window when Word is working properly.

Attach the screenshot here in your next reply.

    [How to take a screenshot]

    1. When the window is on the screen please press the "PrintScreen" key ("PrintScreen" is located at the top of the keyboard, at right. At this step we can not see anything, as the picture is copied into Windows's clipboard)

    2. Open a graphic editing application (We recommend using the standard Paint program, that comes with every Windows installation (Start > Program > Accessories > Paint))

    3. Paste the picture in a new Paint document;

    4. Save the file in JPEG format (BMP format is too big to send by e-mail)

    Take care.

That option will not exclude files, will only activate the module.

    Let me know the status.

    Hi Christian,

(Sorry - I thought I'd replied to this, but it looks like it got lost somewhere)

We seem to have returned to where we were in this discussion on 21 Feb 2012.

    So if I.....

    1. Open the Bitdefender program > Settings > Antivirus > Exclusions

    2. Set "Activate exclusions for files" to ON.

....then the problem goes away. If you set "Activate exclusions for files" back to Off, the problem returns.

And the question raised on 21 Feb was what else is BitDefender excluding just by setting the "Activate exclusions for files" button to ON?

    Cheers

    Hello :)

If you set "Activate exclusions for files" to ON, this only activates the module, it does not exclude anything.

I recommend you to leave it on because it will not affect the functionality or the security of your stations.

    Take care.
