I just downloaded and installed the free A/V engine that is listed as 2009. I then tried to update but its fails with "could not connect". Are there update problems?
I see the setting are set to update from: http://upgrade.bitdefender.com/
and this site shows "File not found." So something is wrong.

Yes I had activated it and no I do not use a proxy. Today it works and is updating. Yesterday it did not work.

It's is possible that the update server is timed out which happens sometimes. Glad to see this working for you.
