Windowsxp User Account Access

I recently installed BD 2008 antivirus on a pc running windowsxp. 3 of 4 user accounts can access all applications etc. The 4th user account gets an error message "Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item."

Anyone else have this problem, and are there any known solutions?

  • Hello dtanguy,

Could you please be more specific about your problem? I didn't quite understand what you mean. An example or a screenshot might help.

  • Hi Cris:

Sorry my initial post was a little cryptic.

I'm running Windows XP on one computer (a Dell). I established four user accounts when we got the PC several years ago, an account for me, an account for my wife, and an account for each of my daughters. All of the accounts were set up with "Administrator" permissions.

Here's an example of my problem. We have an Epson Scanner. When my wife is logged in to her account and she tries to access the Epson Scanner she gets a window that shows at the top

    C\Program Files\Epson\Smart Panel\Smapanel.exe

The text in the window then says "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item."

She gets this same message when she tries to access Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Word, iTunes and almost every other application that we have.

When we try to access these same applications from other user accounts mine, or either of my daughter's we don't have this problem.

Up until the time I installed BitDefender 2008 Antivirus she was able to access all of this from her user account.

It's almost like she can't access any executable file from her user account.

I don't know if it's related to BitDefender or not. I also installed Webroot SpySweeper software at the same time as BitDefender (Got rid of Norton Internet Security!!!).

I've been looking at similar postings on Google. The "Unblock" option does not appear when I try this as some have suggested.

I did read one posting that said AVG, BitDefender and some other antivirus treat something as a trojan (as you can tell, I'm a real novice and don't understand what this all means( , but the solution they offered seemed to be specific to AVG. Here's where I read that http://forum.grisoft.cz/freeforum/read.php?4,84743,sv=

I hope this information is a little more useful to you. Thanks for any help you can render!

Yes, what you have read there is true. When something (an antivirus or some other application) locks a file, you'll get that error when you try to access the file.

However, the link you have posted has absolutely nothing to do with your situation. In that link is described a particular situation, when AVG was blocking a file because was infected. As far as I understand, this is not your problem because BitDefender doesn't show any alerts that it has blocked the files, right?

Please take a look at this topic: http://forum.bitdefender.com/index.php?showtopic=3288

There have some reports that BitDefender, after scanning the files, doesn't release the files correctly, resulting in permanent locks and the users are not able to open them anymore, until system reboots. If this is your problem, please continue posting in that thread. Otherwise, continue here.

If you don't have the problem from the above topic:

You said you previously had Norton IS. Did you completely uninstall Norton before installing BitDefender?

    Take a look here: http://forum.bitdefender.com/index.php?showtopic=1379

Use the specific uninstall tool for Norton, then I recommend that you reinstall BitDefender.

    To re-install BitDefender:

    - uninstall it, using the Uninstall Tool

    - reboot your PC

    - install again BitDefender

    - reboot

    - see if you still have problems

Please post if this solves your problem.
