Please Help

I am having trouble with my computer. Apparently, it has a virus that completely ruins the graphics of the desktop. According to what I have found this virus has a connection with the dwm.exe file in the system32 folder of Windows Vista, and the explorer.exe of the Windows folder. I am not sure, but the svchost process may also be involved. I passed the antivirus several times, but the result is that there are no threats. The only answer I could find was to terminate the explorer.exe process, but a PC without the explorer is very anoying to use. I'm beginning to think that the only solution to the problem is formatting the computer. Any suggestions?

Update BitDefender, then try a Deep System Scan in Safe Mode. If you still cannot find the source of the problem i suggest you you using Ad-Aware, or Spybot. Update them before you scan for the latest virus definitions.

These are very good spyware/virus programs and free (remember not to enable real-time protections it can clash with BitDefender and make your PC more vulnerable)

  • Hello Fr3,

As Chesda said, HijackThis! could show some valuable information of what's going on. BUT don't fix anything if you don't know what your doing! HijackThis! doesn't use any signature-based scanning or anything like that, it just shows what is different then the default settings (and fixing what you don't know might actually break your system).

So: make a scan with HijackThis! and post here the log. I'll take a look on it and tell you what to fix.

Also, make a scan with SUPERAntiSpyware in SafeMode (after you install it, update it) and let it clean everything it finds infected.

If you have suspicions about some files, please put them in a Zip file, protected by the password infected and attach them to your next post.

    Cris.

  • Thanks for the help guys. I am sending the HijackThis log. The SUPERAntiSpyware showed no threats. I scanned the PC with Spyware Doctor, and deleted some viruses, but I'm not sure if the problem is gone.

  • Next time, please paste the content of the log file here, if you attach the entire file, only mods/sm/virus researchers will have the permission to download it.

    Hello Fr3,

Looking at your HijackThis! log, I notice only two posible problems:

    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [ares] "C:\Program Files\Ares\Ares.exe" -h

Looking on the web for the above application reveals that it might be a worm. It comes with the Ares P2P client, but it seems that it downloads some viruses on your computer. Please find this file, put it in a ZIP file protected by the password infected and attach it to your next post. The BitDefender Virus Analysts will take a look at it.

    O13 - Gopher Prefix:

The above line is a left-over from a previous infection. Please select this line in HijackThis! and click Fix.

However, the above issues, apparently, aren't related to the problem that you described in the first post.

dwm.exe << this is a legit Windows Vista file, which is in charge of the Aero interface and the other interface effects in Windows Vista

explorer.exe << this is the Shell Application for Windows operating systems. It's a legit application.

svchost.exe << this is a legit system application, used by Windows to run different System Services.

From the description you've wrote, and the possible relation of the problem with the above applications, I can only assume that you have a problem with your Video drivers, or with the Graphics Adapter itself, because this would explain the graphical issues (that ARE related with dwm.exe).

So please try to update the video drivers (and make sure that both the drivers and the graphic hardware are 100% Vista compatible).

Also, if the issues continue, try to disable the Aero interface (and other effects) and see if the problem persists.

    Cris.
