Internet Problems

I tried the Total security suite during November but the Parental control was useless even after many calls and ignored emails, nothing was solved. I could not get into varios Kids Websites (ClubPenguin being one)unless everything was disabled. I then purchased the Antivirus only as I wanted something that also stopped Spyware. unfortunately The Internet has slowed down and I cannot access some websites on the 2 machines that have BitDefender 2008 Antivirus running, the second machine is a brand new build of XP sp2 with only Office on it. My laptop which still has McAffee installed connects with no problems at all. I have only noticed the connection problems on 3 regular kids sites which I had originly told my children where just busy over Christmas

I feel like removing it as I am fed up with my kids complaining.

For Info all PC,s are XP sp2 using the same router the 2 that have problems 1 is wireless and 2 is cabled.

Nothing else has been installed since Bit Defender on either machine.

Any help appreciated

Hello Kirahan,

Could you give some examples of the sites that have problems connecting?

Also, does the problem persist if you disable BitDefender? Try to disable the HTTP scan (Antivirus -> Custom level -> Scan HTTP traffic) and any Identity Control features you might have enabled (I am not sure if BD Antivirus includes the Identity Control feature) and see if you still have problems.

Three sites are http://play.clubpenguin.com and accweather.com and Stardoll.com

I have made sure that BD does not scan HTTP traffic, infact it will not on the Default setting.

Yesterday I actually stopped it from loading and still could not get through, so can only think that it has re-routed traffic differently. Also stopped any other processes running to no effect - just in case.

Can only think of removing it completly as a next option unless you have any ideas. still no response from the BD help desk!

Hello Kirahan,

I can access the above links without any problems (I have BD Total Security), so this makes me wonder if the problem is somewhere else.

To be sure that BitDefender doesn't redirect the traffic, follow these steps:

1) Disable Auto-Update (choose Permanently when it asks for How Long)

2) Restart Windows in SafeMode

3) Go to the path where you installed BitDefender (usually c:\Program Files\ BitDefender\ BitDefender2008\), find the file httproxy.dll and rename it to something else (like httproxy.dll2). This is the file responsible for scanning the HTTP Traffic

4) Reboot normally and check the connection.

If you still have problems, as I said, the problem might be somewhere else.

Please post the result of the above test.

Hi Chris,

I removed BD completely, Ran AVG Malware protection and also removed the folder from Program Files from the newly built pc to no effect.

Not sure what to do now apart from a rebuild, the laptop which never had BD put on still works fine. I have checked the Hosts file, disabled Firewall and checked the sites were not restricted.

Just anyoyed that it's effecting both pc's straight after the BD install.

This is now FIXED The Router had a slightly low MTU of 1452, I changed it to 1500 and everything is ok. BD actually starts quicker on boot up.

BD must look for a higher MTU (I know 1500 is the default for ethernet)

For info:- there is a registry entry that can be added to try lower MTU sizes by default on MS website.

I don't understand how MTU prevented you from accessing some certain web sites?

You changed MTU on your router, as the router is accessing internet. OK. But the registry entry from MS's website will only change the computer's MTU - it won't touch the router!

Or did I misunderstand something? :unsure:
