W8 - Multiple Antivrus Message - Help Please

Hi,

I am two weeks in to using Windows 8 on a new laptop. I installed BD AV+ 2013 and when I did this, BD automatically uninstalled the Norton security software that came with it. There were a couple of extra Norton programs which I removed using Add or Remove Programs in the Control Panel. Windows Defender has been turned off and as far as I'm aware there is no other security software installed.

Every now and then, I get a pop up message informing that multiple antivirus programs are installed and running and that this will affect the performance of my laptop. When I click on this message, I get another pop up window that prompts me to unistall BD antivirus and BD anti spyware. Obviously, I don't want to do this! The message does not give me the option of unistalling or stopping the 'other' software - in fact, it doesn't even tell me what it is!

I also get messages telling me that BD and Windows Defender are BOTH turned off and that I should turn one on. When I click on the message that prompts me to start BD, nothing changes and the 'Action Centre' is still telling me that both are turned off.

I have attached screen shots of all these scenarios. I realise that this is probably a Windows 8 problem rather than a BD problem but if anyone can help it would be very much appreciated.

I should add that BD says that is running fine and that there are no problems...

Hi Columbo,

Yes I still get that message. It doesn't say 'unknown software'. All it does is to give me the option of uninstalling BD. So, it seems to be saying that more than one antivirus and more than one spyware program is installed, but it doesn't say what the other software is.

It pops up especially when I'm watching BBC iPlayer, if that helps. But it does pop up at other times as well. There is no mention of any Norton stuff in my program list...

Did you want me to post the longer route of proper uninstalling of BD, and of running the Norton uninstall tool and reinstalling BD? It may not clear up all the Action Center messages, but maybe of the uninstalling of BD notification.

I worry about uninstalling BD, especially as my laptop is permanently online. Is there some way of detecting if there are any remnants of Norton or of detecting other (Windows?) security software that might be running?

Run the Norton Uninstall tool: https://www-secure.symantec.com/norton-supp...erProfile_en_us Restart your PC.

Run the free version of CCleaner in Registry mode, and delete any leftover Norton keys that may be left, and run it in Sweep/Cleaner mode. Then look for any leftover Norton files in the usual locations (Program Files/Program Files(x86)/ Program Data/Application Data), and delete them/empty Recycle Bin, as needed. Restart your PC.

In Control Panel/Window Defender, disable it's real time settings/scanning etc.

We'll then see what Action Center says, compared to the "normal" errors linked to in my above links. Again, if BD is green, you may want to disable the Action Center warnings in, Settings, for now.

You're welcome, it was gladly done

I suppose every once in awhile you could re-enable the Action Center Security notifications, and see if it's been resolved by a BD update, or if the resolve is posted here on the forum.

Well, unfortunately none of the above seemed to work. And I managed to capture the pop up and the subsequent messages on screen prints, which I have attached. It seems that, actually, it is the Samsung software that is detecting the 'problem'. When I click on the pop up message it brings up the Samsung 'action centre' as you can see from the screen prints.So, as it's not Windows I don't know if there is a solution?

I will try the Samsung forum if there is one. If you have any other ideas they would be most welcome. Thanks very much for your help anyway...

Their system "updater" "troubleshooter" software, could be conflicting with Windows 8.

It's again up to you, but you could either disable it in its settings, not have it start up from MSCONFIG services and start up, (also Administrator tools/Services), or uninstall it (checking to make sure you can re-download it from the website if needed) I tend to find those type of tools helpful, sometimes annoying, and and at times "bloatware" It's up to you. For now, just try disabling it, and keeping up with updates/driver updates via the installed softwares "look for update" option.

This is a brand new laptop running Windows 8 - only had it a couple of weeks. My Jurassic PC (over 6 years old) was really straining and crashed several times in 2012. It was running Windows XP, so all this is relatively new to me. I like Windows 8 and I like the fact that Samsung has its own software installed to keep things up to date. This makes me very cautious about switching things off or disabling things. Although it's coming up with confusing messages, there is some reassurance in knowing that at least it is monitoring things.

If I could just get to the bottom of this 'multiple' antivirus stuff, I'd be happy...

I've put an email in to Samsung Support - although I don't hold out much hope as they didn't even have the model number of my laptop in their gargantuan drop down list...

So, this is the reply from Samsung Support - pretty much as you have already said Scott and nothing more specific. At least I suppose that means this is not a regular, recognised issue so maybe I shouldn't worry about it too much? I used CCleaner more than once. I confess to not really understanding everything that it finds in the registry, but I have now deleted anything referring to Symantec or Norton. I will have to see what happens...

I'm sorry to hear about the problems you are having with the anti-virus software on your device. I can understand the frustration this can this cause.

I would recommend going into the security settings on your computer via the control panel. This should tell you what anti-virus is currently running on your system.

If you had Norton on your system and previously uninstalled this, I would recommend running a registry cleaner as well, to clear any left over files from the install. These can be found via a quick search on Google and most of them are free.

You did good, Adam, and deleted only the keys that needed to be removed. Now that you pretty much have that cleaned up, you could try the uninstall/reinstall option of BD as previously suggested, to see if that helps with "multiple security running" (confirm disabling Defender) etc. issues. Yet, since it partly a known issue, and your desire is not to do allot of uninstalling/reinstalling, and Bitdefender is Green and functioning properly in and of itself, then you should be fine

You can once in awhile, as previously mentioned, change your notification settings and see if Action Center is now recognizing BD.

(right click on Bitdefender icon from system tray-near the clock-and choose "About". You should see in the left side the build number).

In order for the product update to be installed, you need to reboot your machine(you should see in the Events -> "Reboot required" under the Update module).

Hi Georgia,

I have found that by removing Samsung's Support Centre and Help Desk, things seems to be running smoothly. I have retained all other Samsung software including the SW Update program so I am not missing out on any critical updates that may be required.

I haven't dared to re-install these two programs in case the problems I was having reoccur. But I don't think they are essential and I will, therefore, leave things as they are.

It may be worth noting, from your point of view, that some built-in software from any manufacturer (not just Samsung) can result in issues/clashes. So, whilst I appreciate that you can't feasibly test your software on every brand of laptop/PC, it might be helpful for some co-ordinated collaboration with, perhaps, the larger hardware providers.
