Hi Gray, and welcome
Please first confirm that your Windows XP computer meets at least the minimum (if not more) and all other system requirements for Total Security. It is about 1/2 down the web page, just above the blue bar Comparison table: http://www.bitdefender.com/solutions/total-security.html
Then download from here, the direct full offline version of Bitdefender.
Also download the Bitdefender 2013 uninstall tool from here. Run this first, as this was your last attempt in installing. Restart your PC.
Other AV uninstall tools can be found here: http://www.bitdefender.com/support/removal...tware-1107.html
In the above link given for F-Secure uninstall tool is their manual way to uninstall it (as it sounds like you did), and unless you go into their forum, can have a hard time finding this exe uninstall tool itself. It will seem like once you run it, nothing happened, and then your PC will restart automatically, having (hopefully) uninstalled F-Secure. There may be a quarantine file left in Application Data? Please confirm all folders for any leftovers.
Run CCleaner free version in Registry mode and look for any leftover F-Secure or Bitdefender keys, and delete only those. Also run Cleaner (sweep) mode. Restart your PC.
Right click and run as admin the saved Bitdefender file, and when it asks to check for updates during install, deny it and proceed. You can update after it is installed.
Keep us in touch of your results.
Kind regards,
