"bitdefender Services Are Not Responding"

I just installed Total Security 2008 a few days ago. Since then I've added iTunes. Today I get the notice above. I tried the repair but it just stops at the "stopping services" page.

Should I uninstall and try again?

Take it back & return to McAfee?

Try another brand?

This program was rated pretty good but I'm not having much luck.

Any help is appreciated.

My advise would be to try a clean Windows instalation if you had another antivirus software previouslly.

As for McAfee i can barelly call it an antivirus maybe you should try AVAST or some other freeware its better than that:)

I always install the antivirus software first after the drivers in my sistem and works nice ,only problems that may occur is with the antileak modules form some firewalls(that are in fact pro active defences too).Indeed i use the simple BD 2008 with antispyware and antivirus because i always use 3d party firewalls and/or antimalware, but a fresh installation should solve the problem.

BD 2008 is rated good for its excellent antivirus module with its excellent proactive defence.

Always before buying test all versions and decide then which one you need/want.I personally dont like full packages, all in one.The antiphising module is present in the BitDefender Antivirus 2008 also.

In one year and a half of BD usage never had big issues in my computer and not a single serious infection as long as i used a good firewall and i avoided porns /warrez/strange sites.I always double check my computer security with online scans from KAV and TrendMicro ,no problems whatsoever.

Ken - the above was suggesting you do a total re-format of your hard drive. I wouldn't suggest that as that is a HUGE pain. However, they are right in that when you switch Virus Protection companies sometimes bad things happen.

Since you had McAfee previously, I would recommend going to their site and finding their "Removal Tool". Use that, then try a Registry Mechanic or Repair solution. I use Registry Mechanic by PCTools, its only like $25. This should remove McAfee from your Registry and stop it from causing any problems.

Then I would uninstall BitDefender, then re-install.

My advice on AntiVirus is to NOT use McAfee or Norton. They bundle so much crap in with their solutions it hogs resources and slows your PC. BitDefender was rated VERY high, and I have been using it for 3-4weeks now and I did have to use the Repair function once, but all is well now. I wouldn't recommend Norton or McAfee due to you do not need all that other stuff. If you are using Windows XP or Vista you have a built in Firewall, so you don't need that. Microsoft also has Windows Defender, which will stop Spyware, and its made by MS so it will work with Windows. BitDefender Antivirus also has Spyware Protection. So, really all you need is an Antivirus Solution, and BitDefender was the highest rated, so it is a good product once you get it working.

Hopefully the McAfee removal tool will work for you.

Dear KenM,

Please check this topic there you will also find the download link to the Mcafee removal tool. Because there could still be remaints of Mcafee left that could cause conflicts. I recommend that download this BitDefender removal tool. But first right click on the BitDefender icon near the system clock and press on exit. After that run the removal tool. Reboot your computer and install BitDefender again.
