Firewall Protection

I have just installed Bitdefender Free on my and my wife's computer. On hers I get a "no firewall" protection warning from Windows, and it seems on mine the firewall is also inactive.

I gather the Free version does not come with firewall. Is it OK (compatible) to activate the Windows firewall?

Plse keep it simple, I'm no expert.
