BD10 resource usage?

Hi,

I have been using BD9, then 10. I recently read about the resource usage according to PC World. I imagine it's a typo, but for instance, Norton(which I hate) uses 10%, Kaspersky 10%, ready Bit Defender 124%??? whats that all about? I think maybe they meant 12% because they did say that it used MORE resources, by far than the other top AV programs.

Any comments? Irebuilt my PC and instead of installing my paid for copy of 10 AV, I installed AVG free.

What kind of resource do you mean? RAM, CPU, both? BitDefender doesn't use to many resources, I believe the memory usage is under 10 Mb (with all modules on except automatic updates).

Well, I haven't noticed that slowdown so far.

Maybe there were some problems with other software on the tested computer, but I am sure You will get the wright answer from Pc World author.

Just don't be afraid, and if You used BitDefender Av without problems there is no reason not to continue to use it.

You will always see some comments like this, but your experience is the most important one.

I believe PCWorld reffers to the slowdown in Firefox because of the http scanner.It's quite correct, it slowsdown a little for some, more for others but test it on your computer and if the slowdown on your pc is disturbing then all you have to do is to disable the http scanner.On my pc the slowdown is bearable but of course it would be great if in the v11 it will be reduced.

I think everybody would chose a small slowdown because of an antivirus, instead of a BIG slowdown because of some viruses. I haven't noticed any slowdown either, not even when surfing the internet. (I use Opera).

I think that they refer to slow down stat up of Firefox with real time set to scan all files. In my case Firefox is starting up slow with this setup

I also use Firefox and don't have slowdowns. That is mostly due too many add-ons or extensions that are known to have conflicts. Here you find a list : http://kb.mozillazine.org/Problematic_extensions

How long does it takes till firefox is loaded? I also used it with http-traffic scanning enabled and had no slowdowns.

I did not count the seconds but i think that FF is loaded in about 15-20 seconds(not an exact count).

On my laptop i have NIS 2007 and FF is loaded faster then on my desktop, but is not a big deal for me.

My post was just for the record.

That's right, Firfox starts harder because of the addons not because of BD, the bandwitch is reduced about 20-25% because of the http scanner, but like i said for me is bearable.

The problem of FF startup is related to the realtime of the antivirus. If you select scan program files only (in settings, antivirus), this delay flow away.

I tell you, in my case firefox starts in the same time(about 10 sec) with or without BD installed.

I must also agree with vladx. I don't see any difference when enable all options in the virus shield. How many extensions or add-ons have you installed in FF.

No offence, but if you set real time to scan all files FF will hangs. I do like BD but this is the way it goes

It has good an bad things like any other security software.

For the record, System: P4 HT @3GHz, 1G Ram, so it could not be a hardware issue.

Strange I really have all options enabled in the realtime protection. Did you clear your internet cache,history,... ? Because if you don't the chance of freezes are high.

Firefox could have some issues with processors that support hyperthreading what is the case with your pc.

Hi Niels,

I do clean FF cache, history once per week.

Probably is the FF cache that cause this delay because the activity bar of BD is all green if i can say so.

The FF cache is the cause of the lag.

Try this: before opening FF, open BD Management Console and go to Antivirus. Then open FF, and take a look at the last scanned files (in the Management Console you'll se a graph, and the last scanned files).

You'll see that the only thing BD scans is FF's cache.

You could try to add the cache folder to the ignored from scan paths, but only if you keep HTTP scan enabled. Otherwise, you won't be protected against viruses from the web-pages.

Personally, I prefere to wait about 1 minute to open FF and then keep it open even if I don't use it, then ignoring the cache folder from scan. It's safer.

I've set firefox to clear all my private data, which includes the cache, every time I shut firefox down (who me, paranoid?), so I haven't had any problems with freezing with http scanning enabled. Firefox is a little slow to load because I have several extensions on it, but actual surfing on the net doesn't seem to be slowed down too bad because of BD.

Resources measured in most benchmarks like these are a combination of total system resources with relation to a general all around system performance, they do not target one specific resource.. I like BD, I am only trying to find out what is best for my situation. Bit Defender themselves have said they are aware of the system resource hit and plan an update. No one needs to defend BD to me, I OWN it also and have for a while now. I appreciate the constructive replies and I am presently doing my own tests using Bit defender 10, Avast free, AVG free. I will use Sisoft sandra benchmarks and also Sonar 621, my recourding software. Resourses are crucial to audio track count, plugins I can use, etc. Pops, no pops. I will post here when I am done

I have enabled the option to clear all private file when I exit FF.

I just thought about something.

If you don't enable the option to clear the cache on exit, FF will start slower because BD scans it's cache files.

BUT if you enable that option, BD will scan all FF cache files when FF deletes them. So FF will start faster, but close slower then before.

So, in the end, it's just a matter of choise: do you want to wait when you start, or when you close FF?

Maybe for you Cris, but in my case FF starts in 5 sec and stops in 1 sec and i have that option enabled.
