I have a retail(CD) version of IS 2013 with license key (not installed) and was wondering if I could install IS 2014 and use the 2013 licence to activate it - or would I have to install and activate the 2013 version first?
you can just install 2014 and activate it with your license. no need to install 2013 first

You can upgrade the product with the existing key that you have now. That is not an issue to activate 2013 version first or not.
