Bd Performance Impact
Hi, I've used bitdefender for a while now.
and I've always had performance issues with it. I've send several emails to the support regarding issues but that didn't accomplish a lot.
now, the problem I'm having is, is that when I have bitdefender (internet security 2013 latest updates) installed, my computer boot takes significantly longer then it would take normally. because when the windows 8 boot logo dissapears my screen stays blank for like 20 seconds before I can actually log on.
besides that, the bdagent service seems to take up a lot of harddisk usage (not space). also, when bitdefender is updating (which it does a lot) my internet is just sooo slow. and I'm pretty sure it has nothing to do with anything else than bitdefender as I have 100mb/s internet up/down speed.
besides that, the overal responsiveness of my system is just slower. and when i uninstall bitdefender everything works perfectly fine again.
and last but not least, the interface seems buggy. when i disable auto update it just re-enables itself after a few minutes. and I can not keep auto pilot turned off as i like to keep control of things myself. (when i disable it, it's just enabled again after some time)
Am I the only one suffering from this performance impact? and can this be solved?
help is appreciated
some info about my pc:
-Sony Vaio
-Intel Core I5 @3,1Ghz
-6Gb ddr3 ram
-Windows 8.1 Proffesional
-100mb/s down/up internet glass fibre cable
-Bitdefender internet security 2013 fully updated
-AMD Radeon Graphics

Hi Jasper, welcome to the forum
I had similar behaviour with My BIS 2013. Over time and experimenting my PC performance improved significantly.
Your "AutoPilot" problem is beyond my expertise (I am not a BD geek).
AutoPilot vs UserMode
- my PC is set to "UserMode" ON + "AutoUpdate" OFF
- I daren't fiddle with these two settings because other "deeper" settings are undone (I discovered the hard way)
- Although I just noticed when I Open Bitdefender (via the "B") for a nano-second it shows "Auto-Pilot" then flicks to "User Mode"
- BD updates every 2 hours ... it slowed my Toshiba Laptop to a crawl, so I opted out of AutoPilot.
- I found What to do when Autopilot/Autoscan/Auto Update are randomly disabled helpful.I've always had performance issues with it. I've send several emails to the support regarding issues but that didn't accomplish a lot.
Frustrating ! I waited 6½ weeks for a response to one of my threads. Yesterday I found a 5 week old thread ignored, and all the OP wanted to know was how to open the BD UI. He was single clicking the "B"
I have given up on emails, because I can never find the web-window. I just get a circular FAQs > cannot find an answer (link) > FAQs again " />boot takes significantly longer then it would take normally. because when the windows 8 boot logo dissapears my screen stays blank for like 20 seconds- How long since you defragged the hard drive ?
I use MyDefrag (free) ... Windows defrag is rather weak.
Author offers lots of tutes + FAQ help. The official forum is locked but a temp forum is available.
The defrag progess map leaves a lot of BD files, I suspect BD does not allow their files to be moved ... defragged - Windows indexing can slow performance to a crawl (in my experience) ... mine is turned off
Indexing is used by MS "Find File" -- and indexing does NOT index all folders
I use "Everything" (free) program to find files AND FilesearchEX ($) to find file-contents and/or files/folders. Neither is dependent on MS Indexing. - Startup, how many programs run at Startup ? Mine is trimmed down to bare bones
Most apps add themselves to "Startup".
Call for help in this thread if you need it. (or http://www.eightforums.com/... highly recommended)

BD (I could be corrected) have various mirrors (In another AV I tried download speed was woeful, a change of mirror helped me)
Maybe a phone call to your local BD office -OR- Google searchthe overal responsiveness of my system is just slower. and when i uninstall bitdefender everything works perfectly fine again.
BD is always doing its job. Constantly monitoring for unexpected problems.
The price for protection is a lag in performance.
BD has saved me several times by capturing risks ... even when I didn't expect one. (Some were false-positives, but I can live with that
If you are a gamer, (I am not) ... any AV will affect performance. BD has settings for gaming
ie, Settings (large cog at top) > General (icon) > General (tab) > Automatic Game Mode ... setting
Hope I have helped. My apologies if my suggestions are rudimentary for you, I had no way of knowing your level of expertise

1) Have you got other resident malware protection running, that will cause performance issues ?
2) You should follow the instructions in this thread http://forum.bitdefender.com/index.php?act...f=311&id=42 and update to the latest product version.0 -
Hi, thank you all for the reply's
In response to grayghost2:How long since you defragged the hard drive ?
I set windows to automatically defrag my drive and perform other maintenances when the system is idle for a while,
but I don't think fragmentation could cause this problem. some people say the boot problem has something to do with my graphics card drivers. but again, as soon as I uninstall BD everything works fine again.Windows indexing can slow performance to a crawl (in my experience) ... mine is turned off
Thank you for that tip, I've heard lots of people talking about disabling windows indexing but never really tried that. might be worth giving a try.Startup, how many programs run at Startup ? Mine is trimmed down to bare bones
I always disable pretty much every single startup program on my computer except for BD and my trackpad driver.BD is always doing its job. Constantly monitoring for unexpected problems.

I completely agree with that, thats why I'm still using it.
Anyway thank you for the response, certainly helped me a lot
On to AdrianaHa,
Thank you for the replyHave you got other resident malware protection running, that will cause performance issues ?
No, I don't have any other AV runnin
Markhawl,You also might have a scheduled scan at the same time that you're using this machine.
Thanks, but i've got BD already configered that way
So, I've did some more research on the boot problem in particular and it appears to be a known problem on windows 8. even people without BD have this problem. I couldn't really find a real answer so far. but what I do know is, that in my case it is solved when I remove BD. which is weird because other people without it also have the problem.
A somewhat similar situation: Blank screen before logon screen0 -
Hi Jasper Weiss
With Win7 I do not allow MS to install all updates as MS pleases.
I check every update, tedious I know .. but it has worked for me.
Not all updates are essential ... even the MS list is arranged by essential and non essential.0 -
I'm the same way. I have Windows Update set to download, but let me choose what to install, as some of the optional updates don't apply to me and my PC.

So, you'r saying that an update is causing this problem?
If so, I'd have to re-install windows and check every individual update?0 -
Hi Jasper,
No I am not saying an update caused your problem.
My experience has been that occasional updates have affected my Windows OS in the past. 95, 98, XP and Win7.
As a result I learnt to be careful which updates I allowed to be installed.
As Colombo has also suggested future updates be monitored one at a time.
ie, manual updates not auto updates.
I keep a record of every KB I install, on a txt file along with dates + observations of OS behaviour + tweaks I have made.
- the beauty of TXT files is the contents can be searched, I include "tags" in my text files.
- Win-7 "Find" will not find contents, but 3rd party file-finders will. eg, FileSearchEX
- with about 4,500 txt files my results popup in <30 seconds.
It is the only way (for me) to manage my PCs
Even to reboot between say batches of 5's, and test your OS and primary programs.
Mostly I only install security upgrades, and maybe occasionally non-critical KBs
A lot of upgrades, if you are in a home environment, are totally irrelevant.
Unfortunately keeping Windows OS healthy is like flying a jumbo, requires a lot of experience
Hope you tack down the problem, I will continue to listen in0 -

So does my Win7 Home Premium 32 bit. I have learnt to live with it and I am not stressed by the wait.
20 seconds is not eternity.
Other OS forums might be of help ... sevenforums.com is extremely active and a lot of very experienced MS professionals.
Maybe a downgrade to Win7 might be a solution. Might!
There is a lot of flack around about Win-8/8.1 ... I have already downgraded one laptop from Win8 to Win7.

There is very little gain continually defragging.
I defrag once a week and then a deep defrag no more than monthly.
Your HD is flogging around trying to do too many things at once. Your HD has one head reading and writing .. it is very busy without loading more reading-writing onto it.0 -

Yeah, I've been thinking about an SSD. that should make things faster. besideds that, I move my laptop around a lot so it might also be better for that purpose as it can not be damaged by shaking
And to get back to the updates, I might check them before installing them as you said because there are indeed a lot of useless updates.
Thank you for your help, I've tweaked a bunch of things and it's go a lot faster now. So I'll stick with bitdefender0
