It depends where you buy it from, you can buy the product either way but if you buy from Bitdefender (via Avangate) then you get a digital download and most importantly the license key. You need an internet connection to keep both the product and the virus definitions database up to date so in my opinion buying the digital product is the better choice.
If you have any doubts you can download a trial version, you have 30 days to assess it and at the end of the trial you can buy the license and keep using it.
