I have had Trojan.Fakealert.PP for awhile now but I would just do a system restore and it would go away for a while, and it would always come back. It only happens when I start up firefox and it is in a owners documents named "firefox", I just want to get rid of this trojan once and for all. I have done a HijackThis log file. Please help me, as best you can.

    Hello,

First of all, please find this file:

    C:\DOCUME~1\Owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\hpdj.exe

put it in a ZIP archive, with the password infected, and attach the archive on the Sample Submission section.

If you cannot find the file, read this: http://forum.bitdefender.com/index.php?showtopic=3573

    After that, fix these lines:

Is my computer now malware-free? Haven't heard back in a few days.

  • alexcrist

    Hello jlaidlaw,

And sorry for the late reply.

The file that you attached was clean. As I found on the internet, it belonged to the HP printer drivers (but why was it running, as a system service, from the TEMP folder, I cannot understand). However, you shouldn't have problems because you removed that file. On the site where I found the description if this file states that it's actually recommended that you disable this service (which you did, with HijackThis).

Also, the rest of the log is clean. Do you still have problems? If you do, post a ComboFix scan log. That tutorial says that you should install the XP Recovery Console. This is not really needed (it's only needed for severe infections), so it remains at your option if you install it or not.
