Fails To Work: "service Unresponsive"
I tried moving to Bitdefender, and it's just not working at all.
It gives Service Unresponsive error, and it asks me to reboot. Nothing works.
Tried rebooting,
Tried waiting,
Tried clean reinstall,
Tried completely removing other AVs, and made sure they left no rubbish behind.
It says:
System is not protected
Last Update: Updating...
Service Unresponsive
Restart required
Virus Shield Off
Nothing scanned yet
Downloaded the file from your site, downloaded again even to make sure.
Also every time I uninstall, the uninstall breaks and asks for a reboot.
Upon reboot it restarts the uninstall and then it works.
I don't usually bother trying so much just to test a new program, but it seems promising.

Hiya and welcome to the forums,
Did you uninstall from the Control Panel or did you use the Bitdefender Uninstall tool? If you didn't use that then give it a go - http://forum.bitdefender.com/index.php?showtopic=409360 -
Thanks, didn't expect such a quick reply.
It didn't help though.
The tool marked with success everything except for the second line, I think it was "execute additional tools". Not sure what that means but it sounds unimportant compared to the rest.
Still getting the same service unresponsive.
By the way, tried to install it on a different computer and had no problems.0 -
Hi. There's actually a guide about this issue. Try to check below and hopefully one of the steps will fix this.

Hi again zumzum,
Can you confirm that you have the free version (I see you are posting in that forum) as the reply above does not refer to that version. If you have a different version plese say which one it is.
As a quick check, try going into the Control Panel, finding Bitdefender and running the repair tool from the "Uninstall" section.

Hi all,
It is not hard to check if Bitdefender Antivirus Free Edition's Service is working.*
After reading the link suggested by darge I find it does apply to this case or any case of a Service Unresponsive message (I love the link to uninstall other security solutions!). Rohugh's suggestion to try to repair is not bad either. However it seems to me that everything had been tried. I presume that zumzum checked all system requirements prior to any installation. In the suggested page, the fourth and last step for troubleshooting this problem is to generate a log report and send it to Bitdefender's Customer Care (Contact Customer Care first, as I am not clear what support tool applies for generating the log). I think this may be what needs to be done if everything else failed (zumzum, please report here any conclusion to the matter).

*Bitdefender Antivirus's service, in this case gzserv.exe, is the core of the antivirus, and a problem with it means no protection (the interface, gziface.exe, may be turned off with no ill effects). The service should clearly show within the system Services (Local). These are listed by Component Services within Windows Administrative Tools. It should be Running with an Automatic startup. If the service is running properly, it will block bad pages, so if you try downloading eicar.com test file (from www.eicar.org) a warning should show in the web browser.0 -
Hi graciliano,
The reason I asked about the version, free or paid, is that in order to send in a report to support you have to fill in a license number, the free versions do not have one as far as I am aware.0 -

Hi Rohugh:
Your concern is well taken. For some time it was not possible for submit email tickets because of the required License Key field. The web page has been corrected so the field is removed if the Product is identified as Bitdefender Antivirus Free Edition.
Respectfully,

Thanks for that graciliano, I just had a look at the form, chose the free version in the drop down and you are indeed correct.
Something new I learned.

Thanks everyone.
I did check the guide, only thing I didn't follow was the support tool. Didn't want to be bothered with downloading and playing around with a support tool. But after installing it successfully on a different computer, I guess I'm willing to do that now.
I am indeed using the free version, and I did check the system requirements after I saw it failed (and again now, to make sure).
I didn't try Repair, because from my experience repair doesn't do as much as a clean reinstall.
Thanks for the tip about the service and the test file.
Service is Running, and start is Automatic.
Test file was downloaded successfully (which was expected, but is bad)
After downloading the support tool, I had a mfc100u.dll missing. I understand it has to do with Visual C++, so I installed it.
Still getting mfc100u.dll missing from the support tool.
Could that be related?0 -

Still getting mfc100u.dll missing
,,,,
I found two (2) files in my computer (Windows 8; 64 bit) named mfc100u.dll*. mfc stands for Microsoft Foundation Classes, thus missing these libraries may cause the failure of a variety of unspecified programs. These files are part of the Windows installation. For that reason, running in the elevated command prompt (with Administrator privileges) the command:sfc /scannow
should restore it as it should restore or fix any bad or missing system files. Note this command named with the acronym for system file check may take a while to finish running. Be patient and do not close the command prompt window, just let it run until if finishes; then it may be advisable to reboot.

Sorry for the late reply,
sfc didn't help.
Bitdefender works well on a different computer, it does a good job and I like its small footprint,
Regardless - I can't bother investing this much effort on troubleshooting why it doesn't work on this one.
Sadly I'll have to resort to using a less-ideal anti virus program, with heavier footprint and endless nags, but at least it'll work.
Hopefully a newer version will incidentally resolve this issue, or perhaps if I ever reformat the bug won't resurface.
Thanks everyone for trying to help.0 -
This s u c k s. The issue remains. I shouldn't have to be the one debugging the program. There are a lot of choices out there.
I don't understand why PC Mag rates it Editor's Choice when it doesn't run.
BTW, opened services.msc, restarted the service, ran for a minute, turned itself off again.0 -

I know this is an old thread but I had this same problem and just right now got mine working *EDIT* Got it working for a little while but it started doing the same thing shortly after fixing it but here's what I did anyway just ing case it helps someone:
- I looked at the gzserv text document as suggested in a different thread regarding this same problem by /index.php?/profile/112644-azavoianu/&do=hovercard&referrer=https%253A%252F%252Fforum.bitdefender.com%252Findex.php%253F%252Ftopic%252F45313-bitdefender-free-wont-activate%252F" href="<___base_url___>/index.php?/profile/112644-azavoianu/" rel="" style="color:inherit;text-decoration:none;background-color:transparent;" title="Go to azavoianu's profile">azavoianu .."For further investigations we need a file from your computer, named "gzserv.log", which is located in product's installation folder (default: C:\program files\bitdefender\antivirus free edition\)". The gzserv file on my system was just gzserv and not gzserv.log and there were two of them; the one that is a txt doc is the one I looked at. I pressed ctrl & end to navigate to the bottom of the doc and looked at the most recent entries and back to from there to the date and time that I started having problems and saw some errors but saw only one program noted in there: SAS- Super Anti-Spyware. So I closed the program went to task mgr and ended the SAS process and also disabled the SAS service and checked in the registry at HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run for any entries for SAS to run.
While looking at Services I saw two installed services for another security/malware program Reason Core Security and I stopped and disabled both of those services as well. Essentially, I disabled all other security software making sure none of them were stilling running any processes that could interfere as it has been stated many times in other threads to not run any other security programs with BitDefender (or any others for that matter; but I don't always do that and commonly run multiple security programs).
-Then I went to services.msc (admin) and made sure the Bitdefender Antivirus Service was set to Automatic startup type and Started the service.
-Then I checked Bitdefender and it was still inactive and non-responsive. So I exited Bitdefender, closing the program. I then went to task mgr and ended the Bitdefender processes- there were two; the main engine gzserv and gziface.
-Then I waited a minute or two and then restarted Bitdefender and it showed active. I have been typing this since I got it working and I just now checked and it again is inactive showing service unresponsive. DANG IT!!! Still not working.... back to the drawing board. Argghhh. It is saying to restart again. Am going to check the gzserv doc again (the log) and then restart and go from there. Bah, thought I had it fixed. Might have to move to another Antivirus program like others have. Bummer; really like Bitdefender....0 -

This indeed is old but if I remember correctly I did play around with the service startup settings. I don't recall whether it didn't work at all, or only worked for a short time. But the computer it didn't work on still doesn't have Bitdefender.
Since opening this thread I ended up attempting to install Bitdefender Free on a handful of computers. It either works or it doesn't. If it doesn't work out of the box I recommend not investing longer than 5 minutes trying. If it works on first attempt - lucky you, best free antivirus around and it'll serve you well and silently.
On the computers I'm responsible for, which I usually also use to any extent, I prefer Bitdefender Free over any other free choice. Just don't waste hours on it man, not worth the dollars you're saving.
Some other unrelated issue I noticed with Bitdefender Free on a computer I use for video games:
If the game is at fullscreen the Bitdefender interface sometimes flickers into focus, so if you mouse-click somewhere at the bottom left of the screen the game will minimize. I tested this with over ten different games, and using two different antivirus software. It only happens with Bitdefender. Interestingly, it happens despite the interface being minimized and hidden.
Bottom line is, after two years and with only a few successful installations, I wholeheartedly recommend anyone to at least try Bitdefender in any Windows installation. With other antivirus softwares you'll know they're terrible only after they've been lying to you for months and leaving you at risk, or nagging you constantly. With Bitdefender if it doesn't work you'll know that within 10 minutes. That alone is worth some merit, I guess.0 -
Hello,
Best course of action is to contact support and provide them the logs from the Bitdefender support tool ( bitsy@bitdefender.com ). This way your not gonna waste time in front of the machine.
The issues depicted can be caused by a number of reasons.0
