Optimizer Deleted My Files As Junk

HEY GUYS IM NEW INTO FORUM THINGS SO I DON'T KNOW WHERE TO POST THIS BUT JUST KNOW IM VERY ###### OFF WITH THE BITDEFENDER OPTIMIZER. I JUST INSTALLED 2015 PRODUCT AND ON MY FIRST DAY OF TESTING IT OUT IT DELETES ALL MY FILES, INCLUDING SYSTEM FILES, AS JUNK FILES. AT FIRST I WAS AMAZED AT HOW LARGE THE JUNK COULD BE, AT 78 GB, AND ACCORDING TO THE PRODUCT THE "JUNK" WAS IN TEMPORARY FILES SO I GAVE IT THE GO AHEAD. THEN I OPEN MY DOCUMENTS FOLDER ONLY TO SEE VERY IMPORTANT ITEMS VANISHING. AT THIS MOMENT CLICKING ON MY DOCUMENTS FOLDER A POPUP WINDOW SAYS IT IS NON EXISTENT. SHORTCUT TO PROGRAMS ON THE SMART SCREEN HAVE ALL GONE, MY MUSIC, MOVIES, ALL VERY VERRRY IMPORTANT DOCUMENTS ALLL GONE. DELETED BY THE PRODUCT AS JUNK. ATLEAST IT SHOULD SHOW THE LOCATIONS IT IS DELETING FROM AND REQUEST YOU TO CONFIRM DELETE. NOT GROUPING EVERYTHING AS WINDOWS TEMPORARY FILES AND DELETING THEM.

JUST WANTED TO LET YOU GUYS KNOW THIS. NOW I HAVE TO GO THROUGH A TEDIOUS PROCESS OF REINSTALLING THE WHOLE WINDOWS, REDOWNLOADING AND REINSTALLING PROGRAMS, RECOVERING THE VERY IMPORTANT FILES DELETED BY YOUR PRODUCT AND FINALLY RECOVERING TIME LOST DOING ALL THAT!!!!!!!

VERY VERRY ######!!!!

  • I feel your pain after a long Windows 7 reinstall + upgrade + activation, not due to BD. Thankfully my data is on an external drive.

When I used the cleanup is showed 2GB of Windows junk, but only reported 224k removed. Very strange.

    Lessons learned:

    1) Keep data away from the O/S on a separate disc.

    2) Download Macrium Reflect free and produce a disc image on the newly installed O/S on a separate drive.

    3) Don't give full control to the software. Be choosy.

I think I might use a small HDD for Windows and buy a bigger one for installing programs away from that default program files folder on C:.

    @ amcelvis:

    Thank you for reporting this.

Did you contact Bitdefender support when this happened? If you did, please tell us the ticket ID.

Unfortunately, if you have already reinstalled the OS there is not way to track down what really happened nor help you retrieve the data. Please keep in mind that 'Optimize' creates a registry backup and also generates a report in C:\ProgramData\Bitdefender\Desktop that could have helped us identify and retrieve the data.

Should this ever repeat, please contact us immediately rather than reinstalling Windows.
