Make sure some other AV product such as MSE or Defender in Win 8 is not active. If there are no other products installed or active, then I would uninstall Bitdefender and then reinstall it.

There may be more than one reason for this. Usually Bitdefender Antivirus Free Edition would give a message when there is a problem. Some I can recall quickly are:

You need to register your Bitdefender® installation to continue using this product after the expiration period.
There could be a Service Unresponsive problem I read about in a previous post.

As a general rule: If the program seems to behave abnormally, try repairing it first. I cannot think of anything else at this moment but hopefully this information will help you.
