Bitdefender 2015 Seems To Break Swtor

This one is a bit odd, and I know there was an issue with the 2014 product that sometimes made SWTOR (Star Wars: The Old Republic) fail to launch.

I didn't have that problem, but as soon as I updated from 2014 to 2015 on my Windows 8.1 machine, SWTOR would not launch.

The launcher.exe program would hang with a half rendered window and no error aside from 'not responding'.

Things I've done so far that have not resolved the issue:

1) Added the path to the game to the exclusions list (which was wiped in the upgrade somehow!).

2) Rebooted (of course)

3) Removed and reinstalled the game entirely.

4) Removed and reinstalled Bitdefender entirely, thinking it may have been an upgrade issue.

5) Run the repair tool for both SWTOR and Bitdefender 2015.

6) Added the full path to the launcher.exe, swtor.exe, and every individual folder in the path to the exclusions list.

7) Added all of the dll files for the game to the exclusions list.

I also found that, if I install Bitdefender 2015 while the game is running, the game continues to run; however, if the game is closed for any reason, it will NOT relaunch. It will simply hang with 'not responding'.

Things I have done that have immediately resolved the issue:

1) Uninstalled Bitdefender 2015.

As soon as Bitdefender 2015 is gone from the system, even without a reboot, SWTOR launches normally, so I don't believe this to be an issue with the game client, but rather with something that Bitdefender 2015 is doing. It also doesn't seem as though Bitdefender 2015 is deleting files, as was the issue with older versions, as after removing Bitdefender 2015 the game functions normally.

My second computer is still running Bitdefender 2014 and does not have this issue and SWTOR launches normally.

If I put Bitdefender 2014 on this computer, it does not have the issue and SWTOR launches normally.

If there isn't a fix coming for this or a fix in place that I just haven't found, I'd like to request a refund as I only just purchased the upgrade/renewal a couple of days ago and I'm not willing to not be able to play the game.

    Nothing?

Not even an idea from support?

having exact same issue. when i disable the antivirus, SWTOR works fine, but soon as i turn it back on, it refuses to launch. added the entire game folder to the exeption list but it's not working. some help would be greatly appreciated. using total security 2015, on windows 10.

What happens if you disable Active Virus Control while leaving On-Access Scanning turned on? And when you were adding to the exception list, were you adding the folder to the file/folder exceptions or were you adding the executables to the Process exceptions? I was able to get some other programs running by individually adding them to the process exceptions.

If it works with Active Virus Control turned off, that may be more evidence that AVC is kind of broken. If nothing else, you can't depend on the event logging to tell you whether it's actually blocked something.

The first steps I would take are

    1. Make sure Windows is fully updated

    2. Make sure I am using the latest version of BDTS 2015 with all updates applied

    3. Make sure I am using the latest version of SWTOR with the most recent drivers installed

    4. Make sure all the computers drivers are up to date.

Many gaming issues are due to bad or outdated drivers. I know there have been some recent updates to Windows Drivers that are used by games on Windows 10.

I realize if someone does not normally keep everything up to date that updating them can be overwhelming.

If you haven't already check the SWTOR forum to see if anyone else is having a similar or same problem on Windows 10.

Even if updating everything to bring it all current does not solve the problem your computer will run better and be more secure unless you install a bad driver. Unfortunately it does happen often the fault of the driver vendor for releasing a bad driver.

got it working =D. thanks fencepost for the suggestions.

i had to add the launcher.exe to the "excluded processes" to get it to work. i logged in and ran around a second to make sure it was going to work during gameplay as well.

    1) open the antivirus options

    2) go to the exclusions tab

    3) click Excluded processes

    4) add the launcher.exe from the SWTOR folder

    5) restart pc

i also went back and removed the SWTOR folder from the Excluded files and folders thing just to see if it had any effect, and it didn't. so for me, you only have to have the individual process added to work. hope this helps anyone else with this problem. i'll try to post in the SWTOR forum as well if i can find it again.
